Diesel Generator Suppliers in Oman: How to Size, Specify and Maintain a Generator Set

Diesel Generator Suppliers in Oman: How to Size, Specify and Maintain a Generator Set - Seven Star LLC

Diesel generators keep hospitals, towers, oil and gas sites, telecom shelters, farms and construction camps running across Oman. Some run only when the grid fails; others are the main source of power on remote sites. Buying the right diesel generator is not only about kVA: the rating type, the site temperature, the starting loads, the controller and the after-sales parts all decide whether the set does its job for twenty years or becomes a constant maintenance problem. This guide explains what to check when you buy a generator set, its controller and spare parts in Oman.

Prime, Standby and Continuous Ratings

Generator ratings follow ISO 8528-1, and the same set can carry different numbers depending on how it is used:

RatingMeaningTypical use
Standby (ESP)Maximum power for emergency use during a grid failure, with limited yearly running hours and no overloadHospitals, buildings and data rooms with a reliable grid
Prime (PRP)Power available for unlimited hours with a variable load, usually with a 10% overload for short periodsSites where the generator is the main supply, camps, farms and remote facilities
Continuous (COP)Constant load for unlimited hoursBase-load power plants and process supply

A quotation that only says “500 kVA” is incomplete. Always ask whether the figure is a standby or a prime rating, because a set sold as 500 kVA standby is usually only about 450 kVA prime.

kVA, kW and Sizing

Generators are rated in kVA at a power factor of 0.8, so a 500 kVA set delivers 400 kW. To size a set, list every load with its running kW and starting behaviour. Motors, pumps, chillers and lifts draw several times their running current when they start direct-on-line, and the generator must handle that step without the voltage dropping too far. Soft starters and variable speed drives reduce the starting demand and often allow a smaller generator. UPS systems and drives also create harmonics, which may need a larger alternator.

  • List all loads in kW, with the largest motor and its starting method.
  • Decide which loads must start at the same time and which can be staged.
  • Add a margin for future loads, usually 10 to 20%.
  • Check the voltage dip limit required by sensitive equipment.

Hot Weather and Site Conditions in Oman

Summer temperatures in Oman regularly pass 45 °C, and plant rooms and enclosures run hotter still. Engine and alternator outputs are published at reference conditions, so a set must be derated for high ambient temperature, altitude and dust according to the manufacturer data. Ask the supplier to confirm the output at your site conditions, for example 50 °C ambient, and check that the radiator is sized for that temperature. Coastal sites need corrosion-protected canopies and fittings, and desert sites need heavy-duty air filtration.

Engine, Alternator and Controller

A generator set is three main parts from different makers, and each one matters:

Engine

Common engine families in our range include Cummins (QSX15-G8, QSK19-G4, QST30-G4 and QSK60-G4), Perkins (1106A-70TAG, 1506A-E88TAG, 4006-23TAG and 4012-46TAG) and DEUTZ (TCD 6.1 and TCD 18.0). Complete sets include the Cummins C150D5, C275D5 and C1000D5B.

Alternator and AVR

The alternator converts engine power into electricity, and its automatic voltage regulator (AVR) keeps the voltage stable as the load changes. STAMFORD alternators such as the UC27, S4 and S5 are widely used, with AVRs such as the MX321, MX341 and AS480. A failed AVR is one of the most common reasons for a generator that runs but gives no or unstable voltage, so it is worth keeping one in stock.

Controller

The controller starts and stops the set, protects the engine and alternator, and, in automatic mains failure (AMF) mode, starts the generator when the grid fails and transfers the load. For single sets, typical choices are the Deep Sea DSE7320, ComAp InteliLite 4 AMF 25 and DEIF SGC 120. For two or more sets running in parallel, use a paralleling controller such as the ComAp InteliGen4 200, DEIF AGC 150 or Woodward easYgen-3500XT. Large generators also need protection relays such as the GE Multilin 889.

Transfer Switches

In standby systems, a transfer switch moves the load between the grid and the generator. It can be a motorised changeover controlled by the generator controller, or a dedicated automatic transfer switch such as the CHINT NXZ or Schneider Acti9 iATL, with a controller such as the Lovato ATL600 or ComAp InteliATS2 50. Size the switch for the full load current and check whether the system needs three or four poles.

Spare Parts and Maintenance

Most generator downtime comes from small parts: batteries, chargers, filters, belts, sensors, solenoids, AVRs and controllers. Keep a stock of filters and wear parts for each engine model, and plan an annual load-bank test for standby sets that rarely run under real load. A typical example of a part that stops a set is a fuel stop solenoid such as the Komatsu 600-815-7550. Our diesel generator spare parts category lists engines, alternators, AVRs and controllers.

What to Send for a Generator Quote

  1. Required output in kVA or kW, and whether it is a standby or prime rating.
  2. Voltage, frequency and phases (for example 415 V, 50 Hz, 3-phase).
  3. Load list with the largest motors and their starting method.
  4. Site conditions: maximum ambient temperature, altitude, indoor or outdoor, coastal or desert.
  5. Enclosure: open set, silent canopy or container, and noise limit.
  6. Controller type: manual, AMF or paralleling, and any remote monitoring.
  7. Fuel tank size or required running hours.
  8. Preferred engine or alternator make, if the specification names one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between prime and standby generator ratings?

A standby rating is the maximum output for emergency use during a grid failure, with limited running hours. A prime rating is the output available for unlimited hours with a varying load, so the same set has a lower prime rating than standby rating.

How do I convert kVA to kW for a generator?

Generators are rated at a power factor of 0.8, so kW equals kVA multiplied by 0.8. For example, a 500 kVA generator delivers 400 kW.

Why do generators need derating in Oman?

Engine and alternator outputs are published at reference conditions. High ambient temperatures, altitude and dust reduce the available output, so the set must be derated according to the manufacturer data for site conditions such as 50 degrees Celsius.

What is an AMF controller?

An automatic mains failure (AMF) controller monitors the grid, starts the generator when the grid fails, transfers the load, and returns it to the grid and stops the set when the grid is restored.

Which generator spare parts should be kept in stock?

Keep fuel, oil and air filters, belts, batteries, a battery charger, key sensors and solenoids, and an AVR. These parts cause most generator stoppages and are quick to replace.
