LongTeng ER70S-3 Carbon Steel Solid MIG Welding Wire
LongTeng ER70S-3 Overview
LongTeng ER70S-3 is a copper-coated carbon steel solid wire for gas metal arc welding, listed on page 5 of the manufacturer’s Carbon Steel Solid Welding Wire catalogue. The catalogue gives its conformance as ISO 14341-B-GS3 and AWS A5.18 ER70S-3, and describes it for low-carbon steel and thin plates, as well as low-carbon steel parts that have had thorough surface treatment. In plain terms, it is the general-purpose entry grade of the solid wire family: modest alloying, forgiving behaviour on clean steel, and a wide range of diameters from 0.8 to 1.6 mm.
Seven Star LLC supplies the LongTeng range of welding consumables to fabrication yards, maintenance shops and contractors in Oman and the GCC from Muscat. Because this page is built around the manufacturer’s own catalogue extract, every number quoted below is a typical value listed by the manufacturer, and the extract itself can be downloaded from the documents section of this product page. For project work, ask for the batch test certificate that matches the lot you receive.
What the ER70S-3 class means
General class information, not a LongTeng guarantee: in the AWS A5.18 system the letters ER mean the product can be used as an electrode or as a rod, 70 indicates a minimum tensile strength of 70 ksi in the as-welded condition, S marks a solid wire and the suffix 3 identifies the chemical composition band. The 3 grade carries less manganese and silicon than the 6 grade, which is why it is normally chosen for cleaner base metal and lighter sections rather than for heavily scaled plate.
The ISO designation 14341-B-GS3 printed in the catalogue belongs to the same family of wire classifications used outside North America. A buyer who has a procedure specified to either standard can therefore compare the designation printed on the LongTeng ER70S-3 extract with the designation on the welding procedure specification before placing an order.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.074 | 1.15 | 0.63 | 0.021 | 0.020 | 0.021 | 0.023 | 0.023 | 0.004 | 0.12 |
Reading the numbers
Manganese of 1.15 percent and silicon of 0.63 percent are the main deoxidisers in this wire. They are enough to produce sound weld metal on steel that has been cleaned of heavy oxide, but they leave less margin than the higher-silicon grades when the plate surface is dirty. Sulphur and phosphorus are each about 0.02 percent in the printed analysis, and residual chromium, nickel, molybdenum and vanadium are all near trace level, so no deliberate alloying beyond the carbon-manganese-silicon system is claimed.
The impact line is worth noting for specification work: the catalogue reports three individual absorbed-energy results at minus 20 degrees Celsius, against minus 30 and minus 40 for the neighbouring grades on the same pages. A procedure that calls for a lower test temperature should therefore be matched to another grade or confirmed against a fresh test certificate.
Shielding gas and welding parameters
For LongTeng ER70S-3 the catalogue lists pure carbon dioxide as the reference shielding gas. Gas flow and current are given per wire diameter, with current stated for DC electrode positive:
| Wire diameter (mm) | Gas flow rate (L/min) | Current (A), DC+ |
|---|---|---|
| 0.8 | 15 | 50–100 |
| 1.0 | 15–20 | 50–220 |
| 1.2 | 15–25 | 80–350 |
| 1.6 | 20–25 | 170–550 |
General class information: pure CO2 gives a deeper, hotter penetration profile and more spatter than argon mixtures, which is an acceptable trade on thin plate where speed and cost matter. Keep flow in the range shown for the chosen diameter, shield the arc from draughts when working outdoors, and keep the wire dry and the contact tip matched to the diameter in use.
Where it is used
The catalogue application text for LongTeng ER70S-3 points to two uses: welding low-carbon steel and thin plates, and welding low-carbon steel parts whose surfaces have been thoroughly treated. In practice that covers sheet-metal enclosures, brackets and frames, light platform and handrail work, ducting supports, trailer and equipment bodies and general workshop repairs on mild steel.
Fabricators in Sohar, Salalah and Muscat who run wire-feed power sources such as the Lincoln Electric Power Wave S500 or the ESAB Rebel EMP 285ic will find a 1.0 or 1.2 mm solid wire of this class a familiar consumable. Those two machines are listed on our site only as examples of the type of equipment this wire is run on; the manufacturer does not name specific power sources in the catalogue.
Packaging reference
The manufacturer’s package reference lists GMAW spools to EN ISO 544 in several formats: BS300 (steel, 15 kg), D270 (plastic, 15 kg), D300 (plastic, 15 kg), D200 (plastic, 5 kg) and D100 (plastic, 1 kg), each in corrugated cardboard outer packing. These are the manufacturer’s reference packages, not a statement of what is on our shelves; confirm the spool format and quantity you need when you send the enquiry.
Ordering from Seven Star LLC
Send the diameter, spool format and quantity, together with the specification your procedure calls for, and we will confirm availability and lead time for LongTeng ER70S-3. We supply the wire with the manufacturer’s documentation, and we can pass on questions about suitability for your base metal to the manufacturer. For related products, browse our solid welding wire category.
The catalogue does not list approvals against this grade, so none are claimed here. If an approval or third-party certificate is a project requirement, request it explicitly and we will ask for the document that applies to your batch before you commit.
Storage, feeding and handling
General guidance for any copper-coated solid wire: keep spools in their sealed packaging until needed, store them off the floor in a dry area, and avoid condensation by letting a cold spool reach workshop temperature before opening it. Moisture and dust on the surface are the usual cause of porosity and erratic feeding, far more than the wire composition itself, and in the humid coastal climate of Oman this simple discipline pays back quickly.
When a spool is left on the machine overnight, cover it or remove it. Check that the liner is clean, that the drive rolls match the diameter, and that the contact tip is not worn oversize. A matched feeding path is what allows a wire such as LongTeng ER70S-3 to deliver the stable arc that its datasheet currents are based on.
Quality documents to request with LongTeng ER70S-3
Because the catalogue figures are typical values, a buyer who needs hard numbers should ask for the batch test certificate. For LongTeng ER70S-3 that certificate is the document that confirms the actual chemistry, the mechanical results at the stated test temperature and the diameter and spool format of the lot. Keep it with the weld records, together with the datasheet extract downloaded from this page, so that the consumable can be traced to each welding procedure.
Choosing LongTeng ER70S-3 against other grades
Within the same catalogue spread, the neighbouring entries are ER70S-4, ER70S-6 and the G-class wires. Choose LongTeng ER70S-3 when the plate is clean, the sections are light and CO2 shielding is the plan; step up to a higher-silicon grade when surfaces are less clean or when a lower impact test temperature is needed. A sensible habit is to weld a trial coupon with LongTeng ER70S-3 on the actual material, inspect it, and only then release the consumable for production use.
Pipework teams that mix welded joints with grooved connections, for example the Victaulic Style 107N QuickVic Rigid Coupling, can order consumables and couplings in one enquiry.
