Basler Electric DECS-250 Digital Excitation Control System

Description

A 15-amp digital excitation controller for generators and synchronous motors

The Basler Electric DECS-250 is a complete digital excitation control system. It regulates voltage, var and power factor on a synchronous generator, adds generator protection in the same unit, and can drive a synchronous motor when set to motor mode. A 15-amp pulse-width-modulated (PWM) power stage gives a high initial response to load transients and suits shunt, auxiliary winding, permanent magnet or DC-fed excitation.

It is the controller to specify when an analogue AVR is not enough: paralleled gensets sharing reactive load over Ethernet, cogeneration sets with grid-code settings, or large motors needing power factor control. An optional power system stabilizer (PSS) covers stringent grid-code requirements.

What the DECS-250 controls and protects

  • Modes: AVR, field current (FCR), field voltage (FVR), power factor and var regulation
  • True RMS single-phase or three-phase sensing with full generator metering
  • Auto-tuning with two PID stability groups
  • Protection: 27/59, 81O/U, 32R, 40Q, exciter diode monitor, 59F, 51F, loss of PMG, field short circuit, 25 sync check
  • Limiters: overexcitation and stator current (temperature compensated), underexcitation, var, underfrequency or V/Hz
  • Load sharing over Ethernet; optional PSS to IEEE Std. 421.5 type PSS2A/2B/2C
  • Event recording, oscillography and trending; 16 contact inputs and 12 contact outputs, conformal coating on certain circuits

Choosing the right DECS-250 style

First fix the control power style: LXXXXXX takes 16 to 60 Vdc (24 V or 48 V battery systems) and CXXXXXX takes 90 to 150 Vdc or 82 to 132 Vac. Then match the field: the 32, 63 and 125 Vdc output levels follow the operating power input (60, 120 or 240 Vac nominal) and each has a minimum field resistance. The PSS, fibre Ethernet and Profibus are style options; the full style chart is in the datasheet, so send the style number of the existing unit or the generator nameplate data and we will confirm the match.

Installation and commissioning notes

Setup is done from a PC with BESTCOMSPlus software, using drag-and-drop BESTlogicPlus programmable logic, a real-time strip chart and the auto-tuning function. Paralleled units must share the Ethernet network for load sharing, and a separate cross-current CT input is provided for droop-type paralleling. It is panel electronics: mount it in a suitable enclosure and follow the instruction manual for wiring, field flashing and the PMG or shunt power connection.

Where the DECS-250 is used

Typical homes are large standby and prime-power gensets in oil and gas, petrochemical and utility power stations, and synchronous motors on compressors or pumps using the var and power factor modes. The datasheet range of -40 C to 70 C is useful in hot enclosures, but note the derating: 20 Adc continuous only up to 55 C.
