Brand:

Clippard EC-P-10-09A0 EVP Proportional Valve, 2.7 l/min

Description

The Clippard EC-P-10-09A0 is an EVP series proportional valve: a 2-way normally-closed valve whose flow follows the current through its coil. Decoded with the data sheet, EC is a pin connector, P is proportional, 10 is a 0 to 10 VDC coil (54 ohm, 0 to 0.185 A), 09 is a 0.009 inch (0.23 mm) orifice rated 2.7 l/min and A0 is 100 psig maximum pressure.

From on-off to proportional with the same spider core

The EVP series carries the EV valve features of long life, low power and a single moving part, and adds proportional control, so it can meter air or inert gas rather than only switch it. Clippard says the consistent gain of the valve allows a high degree of control by DC current, open or closed loop, or PWM. Flow is proportional to input current and the valve is cool-running at 1.9 W at 72 F (2.4 W maximum). The photo shown is a family picture of the EVP series, not an exact picture of this code.

Selecting the orifice and signal

The data sheet is clear that the valve should be calibrated for the pressure it will run at, otherwise the power to open it is high and the resolution is poor. The five orifices are 0.009 inch (2.7 l/min at 100 psig), 0.013 inch (6.7 l/min at 100 psig), 0.025 inch (22 l/min at 100 psig), 0.040 inch (18.7 l/min at 50 psig) and 0.060 inch (14 l/min at 25 psig). Control signal choices are 0 to 5 VDC (13.5 ohm, 0.370 A), 0 to 10 VDC (54 ohm, 0.185 A) and 0 to 20 VDC (218 ohm, 0.092 A); do not exceed the current range. The final field gives maximum pressure from 05 to 95 psig in steps of five, or A0 for 100 psig. Seals can be EPDM or FKM, with a minimum order quantity, and not every possible combination is valid, so check the online configurator.

Driving and mounting the valve

Clippard offers the EVPD valve driver, as a board (EVPD-1) or in an enclosure (EVPD-2) with a DIN rail clip (EVPD-2DIN), and an installation socket torque tool. Mount in-line through the threaded ports or on specialised manifolds from pilot to 12-station types. A stored calibration data sheet exists for each proportional valve and is available on request. Keep supply pressure at or below the calibrated figure and filter to 40 micron.

Typical roles

The data sheet describes air or gas flow control by DC current, open or closed loop, or PWM, and the Clippard Cordis part page states that the Cordis controllers are built on the EVP and DVP proportional valve lines. It is a clean air or inert gas valve rated to 120 F, so in hot Gulf installations keep it in a cooled panel. Hazardous-area ratings are not printed in the data sheet. For the packaged closed-loop alternative see the Solenoid Valves range.

Supply pressure and orifice sizing

The data sheet warns that a proportional valve must be calibrated for the pressure in use. A 0.009 inch orifice valve is the smallest of five and delivers 2.7 l/min at the full 100 psig; at lower supply pressure it will deliver less, and the stored calibration record is the guide. Larger orifices carry lower pressure ratings, so a 0.060 inch valve is rated at only 25 psig. Coil resistance, signal range and maximum voltage are linked: a 54 ohm coil at 0.185 A needs 12.4 V at most. Choose the 0 to 10 VDC version if your controller output is 0 to 10 V, and use the EVPD driver where no suitable analog output exists. Operating limits are 32 to 120 F and a clean dry gas supply.

EC-P-10-09A0 questions

What signal does the EC-P-10-09A0 need?

A 0 to 10 VDC control signal into a 54 ohm coil, drawing 0 to 0.185 A.

What is its maximum flow?

2.7 l/min, plus or minus 10%, at 100 psig with the 0.009 inch orifice.

What does the A0 mean?

A0 is the data sheet code for a 100 psig maximum pressure.

What hysteresis should I expect?

Maximum hysteresis is 10% of full current.

Can it be driven by PWM?

Yes, the data sheet says the valve can be controlled by DC current, open or closed loop, or PWM.

Using it in Oman and the GCC

Proportional valves are used in the region in medical and analytical instruments, gas mixing, test equipment and machine automation, where flow or pressure must follow a control signal. Supply the valve with clean, dry, filtered air or gas, because water and dust in compressed air are common in hot and humid coastal plants and affect small orifices. Choose the orifice size and maximum pressure from the required flow, and drive the valve with a suitable controller as given in the datasheet. Keep it within the stated ambient temperature.

Record the controller settings at commissioning, so replacement valves can be set up the same way and spares can be ordered quickly.

About brand

Clippard is an American maker of miniature pneumatic components, based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Leonard Clippard started the company in 1941, making coils and electronic test equipment, and in the early 1950s introduced the Minimatic line of miniature pneumatic components, which became its main business. Clippard is family-owned and operates two manufacturing plants in Cincinnati.

Clippard product families

Regulators include the MAR-1 miniature regulator and the DR-2 precision regulator. The EV series spider valve uses one moving part for long life and low power, while the E2S and NPV series isolate fluids from the actuator. Proportional control is covered by the EVP and SCPV valves and by the Cordis electronic pressure controller, and needle and check valves such as the GNV and JPC series complete the range.
