Brand:

Clippard NPV3-1C-05-24 Solenoid Pinch Valve, 24 VDC

Description

The Clippard NPV3-1C-05-24 is a solenoid-operated pinch valve: a plunger squeezes a silicone tube shut, so the fluid touches only the inside of the tubing. Per the data sheet ordering table it is body model 3 in a one-tube normally-closed configuration (1C), tubing code 05 (1/8 inch ID by 1/4 inch OD medical silicone) and a 24 VDC coil.

Zero dead volume for fluids that must not be contaminated

Other valve types have internal passages in which a little fluid can remain. A pinch valve has none: only the tubing contacts the medium, the flow path is unobstructed and the pressure drop is minimal, which is why Clippard recommends the NPV for whole blood and media carrying particulates. De-energising lets the plunger return, so this normally-closed version stays shut without power. Each valve ships with 12 inches (30 cm) of silicone tubing pre-installed, and replacing a tube is the maintenance step instead of cleaning a wetted body.

How the NPV code works

NPV, then model, then configuration, tubing and voltage: model 1 to 4, configuration 1O (one tube normally-open), 1C (one tube normally-closed) or 2D (3-way, one tube each), two-digit tubing code and 12 or 24 VDC. An optional L before the voltage adds a hit-and-hold circuit, not available with model 1; it energises the coil at full power and then cuts it by up to two thirds to reduce heat. Tubing codes 01 to 07 are medical silicone from 0.030 inch ID up to 1/4 inch ID, and 23, 25 and 27 are sanitary food grade silicone. Power rises with body size, from 1.0 W on model 1 to 7.2 W on model 4, and the larger tubes carry lower pressure limits.

Setting up the tubing circuit

Push the tube through the guide, leave the supplied length or replace it with a matching size, and keep the working pressure under the tubing limit. Avoid leaving a valve energised for long periods without need: use hit and hold, or a normally-open version for lines that are mostly open. Replace tubing at intervals suited to the fluid, because pinching works the same spot repeatedly.

Suitable uses

Drug dispensing, laboratory and medical equipment, waste water dosing, chemical and food and beverage equipment, ceramic, glass and plastic processing and solids handling are the industries Clippard names. Gulf water-treatment skids and laboratory analysers fit well within the 30 psig limit; high-temperature or pressurised process fluid does not. Related pinch-valve data sheets cover panel mount, state feedback and proportional versions; see the Solenoid Valves range for other valve types.

Choosing tubing and body size

Each NPV body model is matched to tubing sizes through the ordering table. Models 1 to 4 span coil powers of 1.0, 1.5, 4.2 and 7.2 W; model 3 is the 4.2 W body and takes the 1/16 inch and 1/8 inch ID medical tubes (codes 04 and 05) or the 1/8 inch food-grade tube (code 25). Medical tubing carries up to 30 psig on the smaller sizes and 20 psig on the 3/16 inch and 1/4 inch sizes, while sanitary food-grade silicone is rated 14 psig for the 1/8 inch ID and 9 psig for the 1/4 inch ID. Panel-mount, proportional and state-feedback pinch valve bulletins are published separately. Since the plunger pinches the same section of tube each time, specify a spare length of tubing with the valve and check the tube for set or wear on a regular schedule.

NPV3-1C-05-24 questions

What does the 1C in the code mean?

One tube, normally-closed: the plunger pinches the tube shut when the coil is off.

What tubing is fitted?

Code 05 is medical or laboratory silicone, 1/8 inch ID by 1/4 inch OD, supplied in a 12 inch length.

Which materials contact the fluid?

Only the silicone tubing; the valve body has no wetted areas.

What power does it need?

24 VDC, 0.40 A, 4.2 W, with a hit-and-hold option available as an L variant.

Is it certified?

The data sheet lists CE and RoHS documentation.

Using it in Oman and the GCC

Pinch valves are used in the region in medical, laboratory and analytical equipment, food and beverage dispensing, and dosing systems, where the fluid must touch only the tubing and contamination must be avoided. Choose tubing that is compatible with the fluid and any cleaning agents, and replace it at regular intervals, because repeated pinching wears the tube. Use only the tubing size and hardness given in the datasheet, as other tubing may not seal or may wear quickly.

Check the coil voltage and duty against the control system, and keep the valve within the stated ambient temperature, especially in equipment that runs in hot rooms.

Keep spare tubing at site so worn tubes can be replaced quickly.

About brand

Clippard is an American maker of miniature pneumatic components, based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Leonard Clippard started the company in 1941, making coils and electronic test equipment, and in the early 1950s introduced the Minimatic line of miniature pneumatic components, which became its main business. Clippard is family-owned and operates two manufacturing plants in Cincinnati.

  • 1950s: Clippard introduces Minimatic components.
  • 1960s: Clippard becomes a pneumatics manufacturer only.

Clippard product families

Regulators include the MAR-1 miniature regulator and the DR-2 precision regulator. The EV series spider valve uses one moving part for long life and low power, while the E2S and NPV series isolate fluids from the actuator. Proportional control is covered by the EVP and SCPV valves and by the Cordis electronic pressure controller, and needle and check valves such as the GNV and JPC series complete the range.
