Alfa Laval Unique Mixproof CIP Double Seat Valve

Description

Alfa Laval Unique Mixproof CIP valve for cleaning media routing

The Alfa Laval Unique Mixproof CIP is a lightweight double block and bleed valve built for one job: routing cleaning-in-place (CIP) media safely at distribution points in a hygienic plant. It sends pressurised cleaning fluid to the line that needs cleaning while keeping that fluid apart from the product in the neighbouring line, so cross-contamination risk is removed. Seven Star LLC supplies this valve in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

It belongs to the newer pair of streamlined Unique Mixproof valves, alongside the Process version. Where the full-feature Unique Mixproof covers product and cleaning duty, the CIP version is purpose-built for cleaning media, which keeps cost and weight down.

How the CIP valve works

The valve is closed at rest and opened by remote air. Between its two independent plugs sits a leakage chamber that stays at atmospheric pressure whatever the operating state. If a seal leaks, which the manufacturer says rarely happens, the fluid enters the chamber and runs out of the outlet, where it is easily noticed. When the valve opens, the chamber closes and the cleaning fluid passes from one line to the other.

A three-seal design minimises spillage, and the self-cleaning function means the CIP medium washes the surfaces it touches. The balanced plugs reduce pressure effects when the valve moves, which is why the manufacturer links the design to the elimination of water hammer. For higher holding pressures, support air can be added.

Where the Unique Mixproof CIP fits in a CIP system

In a CIP set, the valve sits at the points where cleaning supply and return lines meet process lines. It fills, empties and cleans processing and CIP lines, and it can forward or reverse the flow of the cleaning media. It pairs with a single seat valve elsewhere in the skid, and with ThinkTop for feedback. For product-carrying matrices use the standard Unique Mixproof or the Process version instead.

Selection checklist for the Unique Mixproof CIP

  • Line size and hygienic tube standard on both sides.
  • CIP chemicals (caustic, acid, sanitiser), temperature and pressure.
  • Need for support air at high holding pressure.
  • Mounting orientation, including upside down.
  • Seal materials compatible with the cleaning chemistry.
  • ThinkTop or other control unit and signal format.
  • Number of valves and whether a skid layout is supplied.

Installation and maintenance

Fit the valve with the leakage outlet visible and drained to a safe point. Because it is lightweight, it can be supported without heavy brackets, but the pipe work should still be restrained against thermal movement. During commissioning, verify the plug stroke and feedback, then run a flush with water before chemicals.

The maintenance-free actuator and defined seal compression extend the interval between service visits. When a seal change is needed, the brochure says it takes minutes with standard Alfa Laval service tools, so hold a seal kit as a spare. Check the leakage drain on each operator round, and record any wetness found, because it is the quickest indicator of seal condition.

If you replace an older valve, compare the nameplate and the connection dimensions first. A lightweight CIP valve is not a drop-in swap for a heavy product valve, and the actuator clearance above the valve should be checked against the available space.

Cleaning-media routing in Oman and GCC food and beverage plants

Hot caustic and acid cleaning cycles are normal in dairies, juice lines and bottling plants in the region. Reducing the volume of water and chemical used per cleaning cycle saves cost where water is produced by desalination, and it reduces effluent load. The manufacturer quotes up to 90% savings in water and cleaning media when combined with ThinkTop, though actual savings depend on the plant. Warm ambient conditions also mean cleaning chemicals are often handled at elevated temperature, so check seal compatibility at your real cleaning temperature.

Plants that switch production between several products in a day make the most of a CIP routing valve, since cleaning circuits can be shared between tanks and lines without risking the neighbouring product.

About brand

Alfa Laval is a Swedish engineering group built on three technologies: heat transfer, separation and fluid handling. Gustaf de Laval and Oscar Lamm founded the company in Stockholm in 1883 as AB Separator to make de Laval's continuous milk separator; the name Alfa-Laval was adopted in 1963. The company built its first heat exchanger in 1938, and today its plate heat exchangers, separators, pumps and valves are used in energy, marine, food, water and process industries. Group headquarters are in Lund, Sweden.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Alfa Laval gasketed, fusion-bonded and welded plate heat exchangers and hygienic pumps for buyers in Oman and the GCC. Units and spare plates or gaskets are matched from the serial number on the frame nameplate.

Alfa Laval at a glance

Origin Founded in Stockholm in 1883 by Gustaf de Laval and Oscar Lamm as AB Separator; renamed Alfa-Laval in 1963
Headquarters Lund, Sweden
Ownership Alfa Laval AB, a public company listed on Nasdaq Stockholm
Milestones Continuous separator (1880s), disc-stack separator using von Bechtolsheim's conical disc patent (1890), first heat exchanger (1938)

Alfa Laval heat exchangers and pumps

Model Type Typical use
M6, M10, M15, T20 Gasketed plate heat exchangers HVAC and district cooling, cooling water, lube oil and process heating or cooling; plates can be added or cleaned
AlfaNova 27 Fusion-bonded plate heat exchanger, all stainless steel Compact duty where copper brazing is not acceptable, such as ammonia and some process fluids
Compabloc+ Fully welded plate heat exchanger Higher pressures and temperatures and aggressive media in refineries and chemical plants, without gaskets on the plate pack
LKH Hygienic centrifugal pump Food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical processing, with cleaning in place

Where Alfa Laval equipment is used

In Oman and the GCC, Alfa Laval plate heat exchangers are common in district cooling plants, HVAC systems, power stations, desalination, oil and gas processing, refineries and marine engine rooms. Gasketed units suit duties that need regular cleaning or later capacity changes, while welded and fusion-bonded units handle higher pressures, temperatures and media that gaskets cannot. Hygienic LKH pumps serve dairy, juice and beverage plants.

Ordering Alfa Laval equipment: what we need

For spare plates and gaskets, send the serial number and model from the frame nameplate. Alfa Laval keeps the build record, which defines the plate material, pattern and gasket type for each position. For a new heat exchanger add both fluids, flow rates, inlet and outlet temperatures, allowed pressure drop, design pressure and temperature, and connection standard. For an LKH pump send the model, size, impeller diameter, motor data and duty point.

FAQ

Questions about the Alfa Laval Unique Mixproof CIP Double Seat Valve

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01What is the Unique Mixproof CIP used for?
It routes cleaning-in-place media at distribution points, directing pressurised cleaning fluid to the line that needs cleaning without cross-contamination risk.
02How does it detect leakage?
Two independent plugs with a three-seal design form a leakage chamber at atmospheric pressure; any leak drains through the outlet where it is easy to see.
03Can it be mounted upside down?
Yes. The balanced design allows upside-down mounting if required, and support air can be applied for increased holding pressure.
04Is it normally open or closed?
It is a normally closed valve, controlled from a remote location by compressed air.
05What savings are quoted with ThinkTop?
The manufacturer states up to 90% savings in water and CIP media when the valve is combined with ThinkTop. Actual results depend on the plant.
