Description
The Swagelok SS-QC6-S-600 is a QC6 quick-connect stem without a valve: a single-end shutoff (SESO) stem. It stays open when it is uncoupled, which gives the highest flow of any QC6 stem and makes it suitable for vent lines, drains, low-pressure supplies and connections that are only parted when the line is empty or isolated. The inlet is a 3/8 in. Swagelok tube fitting, and the body is 316 stainless steel.

Open stem, high flow
With no valve in the stem, the flow path is not restricted. The catalog gives the QC6 SESO stem a Cv of 1.0 with a standard body and 1.5 with a full-flow body, twice the 0.5 of the double-end shutoff version. The stem is 2.52 in. long compared with 2.64 in. for the DESO stem SS-QC6-D-600. Because the stem remains open, the body valve is the only closure, so fluid pressure on the stem side leaves when the line is parted.
The catalog states plainly that single-end shutoff quick-connects must not be uncoupled under pressure. The stem side is open to atmosphere once uncoupled; if the stem is attached to a pressurised line, it will vent.
Pressure and temperature
The QC6 series in 316 stainless steel with FKM O-rings is rated 1500 psig (103 bar) coupled at room temperature, 1350 psig at 150 F, 1150 psig at 200 F, 970 psig at 250 F and 400 psig at 400 F. When uncoupled or while coupling and uncoupling, the maximum is 250 psig at 70 F. A brass series is also in the catalog with its own ratings. The data page lists this stem as supplied with no lubricant on any components, in contrast with the lubricated DESO stem.
The materials list notes that the SESO stem insert is 316 stainless steel in stainless valves and brass C26000 in brass valves; the stem sleeve is 316 stainless steel.
Selecting and ordering
Use SS-QC6-S-600 for utility or test connections where shutoff on the stem side is provided by a valve elsewhere, for example a hose fed from an isolated source. Where the stem side holds fluid that must stay in the line, use a DESO stem. The decoded number is SS, QC6, S (stem, SESO), 600 (3/8 in. tube-fitting). Pair it with a QC6 body, such as the male NPT body SS-QC6-B-6PM.
Order with the correct O-ring designator if the fluid is not compatible with FKM (EP for ethylene propylene, KR or KZ for perfluorocarbon).

Swagelok is the American maker of tube fittings and small-bore valves, best known for its two-ferrule compression tube fitting. Fred A. Lennon and Cullen B. Crawford founded it in Cleveland, Ohio, in July 1947 as Crawford Fitting Company to make that fitting. Lennon bought the whole business and the patent in 1948, and the company has been based in Solon, Ohio, since the mid-1960s.

A Swagelok part number can be read directly. In SS-810-6, "SS" is 316 stainless steel, "810" means a 1/2 in. tube fitting (8 sixteenths of an inch, 10 series), and "-6" is a union. A suffix such as "-8" adds a 1/2 in. NPT end, and "M0" marks metric tube, as in SS-12M0-6 for 12 mm. Tube fittings must be made up the same way every time: finger-tight, then 1 1/4 turns for most sizes. A gap inspection gauge confirms the fitting has been pulled up.
