How the FL SWITCH 1016N works
The FL SWITCH 1016N is an unmanaged Ethernet switch: it learns the MAC addresses of connected devices and forwards frames only to the port where the destination lives, using store-and-forward switching, with autonegotiation of speed and duplex on every port and automatic crossover so that patch and crossover cables are both accepted. There is nothing to configure and no IP address to assign, so it works on power-up. LEDs show supply voltage, link and activity per port. The input and output buffers listed in the datasheet absorb short bursts of traffic.
Because the port count doubles, power consumption grows as well; the datasheet gives the maximum current and the power dissipation for nominal condition, which you should check when planning the cabinet supply. The supply range is the same 9 to 32 V DC or 18 to 30 V AC.
Where the FL SWITCH 1016N fits in a system
Narrow unmanaged switches in the 1000 series are used to extend a control network inside a cabinet: PLC, HMI, remote I/O, drives and cameras connect through a short copper link. They support the PROFINET Conformance Class A listed on the datasheet, but they have no diagnostics or redundancy features of their own. If you need VLANs, ring redundancy or SNMP monitoring, a managed switch such as the EP4000 series is the correct choice.
The FL SWITCH 1016N is for larger local networks such as a rack of remote I/O stations, cameras and drives where a single switch is preferred to several small ones. If you need monitoring, step up to a managed model.
Selection and ordering checklist
- Count the devices to connect and choose a switch with enough ports for the present count plus a reserve.
- Confirm that all devices need only 10/100 Mbps and copper links of up to 100 m.
- Check the supply: the table gives a DC range and a 24 V AC option.
- Check the width and depth against the cabinet space.
- Confirm that unmanaged operation is acceptable, with no VLAN or monitoring.
- Check the ambient temperature range.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the FL SWITCH 1016N
Mount the FL SWITCH 1016N on a DIN rail, connect the supply to the push-in terminals and patch the devices with shielded twisted pair cable with RJ45 connectors. Observe the maximum 100 m per segment. After power-up, check the US LED and the link LEDs. Keep shielding continuous and ground it according to the project rules.
Mounting is on DIN rail with push-in supply terminals. The MAC table size listed is larger than the 5-port model because of more devices.
Typical applications in Oman and the GCC
In Oman and the GCC, small switches like this connect PLC panels, remote I/O, HMIs and CCTV inside local cabinets at plants, pumping stations and substations. The upper temperature limit matters in sun-exposed enclosures.
Sixteen ports are useful in larger motor control panels and process skids in GCC plants.

- Whether managed functions (VLAN, redundancy, SNMP) are required.
- Ambient temperature range at the installation.
- Delivery location and date.
Site conditions in Oman for the FL SWITCH 1016N
Control cabinets in Gulf plants often run hot, because many sit in outdoor kiosks or in rooms where air conditioning is not always reliable. Before you finalise the FL SWITCH 1016N, check the permitted ambient range and any derating stated by the manufacturer against the real temperature inside your panel, and leave the recommended spacing around the device so that heat can escape. Long cable runs between the field and the marshalling cabinet are common on large sites, so confirm the signal types, wiring limits and earthing arrangement early in the design.
It also helps to standardise on a small number of part numbers across a project. Keeping a few spare FL SWITCH 1016N units on site in Oman shortens recovery time after a fault, and documenting configuration settings makes replacement faster for the maintenance team.

About brand
Phoenix Contact is a German, family-owned manufacturer of electrical connection technology and industrial automation, founded in 1923 in Essen by Hugo Knümann. It began as a sales company, and in 1928 Knümann developed the modular terminal block mounted on a rail, the product the company is still best known for. Phoenix Contact is headquartered in Blomberg, North Rhine-Westphalia.
Seven Star LLC lists Phoenix Contact surge protection, power supplies and safety relays, and sources these components by order number for panel builders and maintenance teams in Oman.

Ordering Phoenix Contact components: what we need
Phoenix Contact items are ordered by a seven-digit order number together with the type designation, both printed on the side of the module. Send both, plus the quantity. If the number is unreadable, send the type text and a photo. For power supplies, state input voltage, output current and whether the unit runs in parallel or with a redundancy module. For buyers in the GCC replacing an older unit, we check the manufacturer's documentation for the listed successor type.
Facts checked against Phoenix Contact's own company history (phoenixcontact.com), October 2026.
