Samson 3349 Aseptic Angle Control Valve with USP-VI Diaphragm

Description

Samson 3349 aseptic angle valve with USP-VI diaphragm

The Samson 3349 is an aseptic angle control valve for food, beverage, biotech and pharmaceutical process lines. The datasheet T 8048-2 gives nominal sizes DN 6 to 100 (NPS ¼ to 4), a maximum pressure of 25 bar (360 psi) and a temperature range of –10 to +160 °C. The distinguishing feature is the PTFE diaphragm that seals the plug stem, certified to USP Class VI at 121 °C, so the stem guide is separated from the process fluid.

The valve body is free of cavities, made from low-delta-ferrite stainless steel 1.4435/316L, and can be cleaned in place (CIP) or sterilized in place (SIP). Seven Star LLC supplies the Samson 3349 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat, for dairy, juice, bottling, pharma and water-treatment skids that need a hygienic control valve.

3349 versions: standard and micro-flow

Two body families appear in the datasheet. The standard version covers DN 15 to 100 (NPS ½ to 4) with flow coefficients Kvs 0.4 to 160 (Cv 0.5 to 190); it can pass flow either flow-to-open or flow-to-close. The micro-flow version covers DN 6 to 25 (NPS ¼ to 1) with Kvs 0.01 to 0.25 (Cv 0.012 to 0.3) and always flows to close, with optional packing behind the diaphragm. Both are angle valves machined from bar stock with a bolted-on bonnet.

How the 3349 controls flow without contaminating the stem

The plug position sets the free area between plug and seat. In the standard valve the product flows preferably under the plug (flow-to-open), and the body must be drained through the connection at the lowest point in either flow direction. The plug stem passes through a PTFE diaphragm instead of a conventional packing, so product cannot creep along the stem and no packing crevice can hold residue. A pipe on the test connection carries away any leakage so it can be seen and drained safely.

Because the optional back-up packing in the micro-flow version replaces the test connection with a stopper, the choice of packing matters when you must prove diaphragm integrity during audits.

Where the 3349 fits and related Samson parts

For liquid-food and pharmaceutical control the 3349 is positioned between the Samson 3347 hygienic angle valve, which uses a clamp-connected bonnet and a cast or bar-stock body, and the 3510 micro-flow valve for small flows. Attachment of a positioner is simple with the 3277 actuator (Type 3730 or 3725) or with the 3379 piston actuator and the 3724 positioner as a compact unit. Typical end connections include welding ends, threaded aseptic connections, clamps and aseptic flanges, listed in the dimension tables.

3349 selection and ordering checklist

  • Process medium, viscosity, cleaning and sterilization temperatures and cycle frequency.
  • Nominal size and Kvs from sizing, and standard or micro-flow body.
  • End connections (weld, clamp, aseptic thread or flange) and the connection standard.
  • Seat material (metal or PEEK soft seal), plug (parabolic or V-port) and body material.
  • Surface finish, required certificates (FDA, USP-VI, EHEDG, 3-A) and the actuator with fail-safe direction.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the 3349

Install the valve with the drain connection at the lowest point so the body empties after every cleaning cycle, and follow the arrow for flow direction. Check the diaphragm test connection during commissioning and after each steam-sterilization. For CIP or SIP, remember that the datasheet limits sterilization to 180 °C for up to 30 minutes.

Maintenance mainly means replacing the diaphragm and seals at set intervals, and recording lot certificates. Use only wetted seals that match your FDA or EU requirement. When the actuator uses fail-safe springs, test the spring action as part of acceptance, because the stem extends or retracts to close or open the valve on air failure depending on the spring arrangement.

Typical applications of the 3349 in Oman and the GCC

In the Gulf the 3349 is relevant for dairies, juice and water-bottling plants, pharmaceutical fill lines, and pure-water or WFI distribution skids at hospitals and manufacturing sites. Warm ambient temperatures make clean cooling and sterile steam important, so the –10 to +160 °C range with a 180 °C sterilization allowance is useful. Stainless steel bodies also resist cleaning chemicals and chlorinated water.

About brand

SAMSON is a German manufacturer of control valves, actuators, positioners and self-operated regulators. Hermann Sandvoss founded the company in Düsseldorf on 1 April 1907, and its first important product was a thermostatic valve that controlled temperature without external power. After moves to Mannheim, SAMSON settled in Frankfurt am Main in 1916, where SAMSON AG is still headquartered.

Seven Star LLC supplies Samson control valves, pneumatic actuators and positioners to process plants in Oman, including the types listed on this page and their replacement units.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types

Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.

Among the positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.

Where Samson valves are used

Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.

Ordering Samson parts: what we need

Every Samson device has a nameplate with the type, a configuration ID (Var-ID) and a serial number. A photo of that plate is the surest route to an exact match. Without it, please send:

  • Valve: type, DN or NPS, pressure rating, body and trim material, Kvs or Cv, plug and seat style, packing and bonnet type
  • Actuator: type, effective area in cm², bench range, fail action and travel
  • Positioner: full type code including Ex protection, communication and options such as limit switches or position transmitter

We check the code against Samson documentation and provide the manufacturer's data sheet on request.

Facts checked against SAMSON's corporate chronicle and press material, October 2026.

FAQ

Questions about the Samson 3349 Aseptic Angle Control Valve with USP-VI

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01What is the Samson 3349 used for?
It is a control valve for aseptic applications in food, beverage and pharmaceutical plants. A USP-VI PTFE diaphragm seals the plug stem and the body can be cleaned and sterilized in place.
02What sizes and pressures does the 3349 cover?
Sizes are DN 6 to 100 (NPS ¼ to 4). Maximum pressure is 25 bar (360 psi) for the standard version and 10 bar (145 psi) for the micro-flow version without end connections.
03What temperatures can the 3349 take?
Operating temperature is –10 to +160 °C (14 to 320 °F), and sterilization at 180 °C is allowed for up to 30 minutes.
04Which actuators fit the 3349?
The datasheet lists the Type 3271 and 3277 pneumatic actuators and the Type 3379 piston actuator, with an optional Type 3724 positioner on the piston actuator.
05How is diaphragm leakage detected?
A test connection fitted with a pipe lets any medium that passes the diaphragm escape to a safe drain. When the optional back-up packing is used, the connection is closed with a stopper.
