IMI STI 2030 Electronic Position Transmitter 4-20 mA

Description

IMI STI 2030 electronic position transmitter: what it is

The IMI STI 2030 is an electronic position transmitter that reports the position of a valve or damper actuator as a 4-20 mA signal. It is mounted on the actuator shaft, follows the rotation or movement, and sends the position back to the control system so that operators and the DCS can see the real valve opening rather than assuming it from the command. The unit is made for quarter-turn actuators and also for linear actuators, with single or double acting designs.

The 2030 can be supplied with integrated limit switches, which turns it into a combined position transmitter and limit-switch box. The sister model 2130 is the limit-switch-only version and shares the same selection sheet. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, supplies the 2030 in Oman and the GCC and will help you work through the options below.

Decoding the 2030 model selection

The manufacturer model selection sheet builds the order from a series of single-character choices. The 2030 is the position transmitter family, and each position in the code selects one of the options in the table.

Position Options
Type 0 = position transmitter, with or without limit switches; 1 = limit switches only (2130)
Protection degree 0 = IP66; 1 = ATEX / IECEx Eexd IIC T6 and IP66
Limit switch number 0 = none; 2 = two; 4 = four
Limit switch type 0 = none; 1 = mechanical SPDT silver cadmium oxide contact (2 SPDT = 1 DPDT); 2 = mechanical SPDT gold plated contact; 3 = inductive proximity sensor, 2-wire
Electrical connection 2 = two 1/2″ NPTF threaded holes
Operation shaft S = STI standard 8 mm; N = to VDI/VDE 3845
Housing Aluminium by default; SS = stainless steel 316

The selection sheet carries two notes. A limit-switch unit in a 316 stainless steel housing is not available as listed, and for the ATEX / IECEx solution the plug and cable gland must be certified for the same protection; an M20 x 1.5 adapter can be supplied if needed, and in hazardous areas it must also be certified.

How the 2030 transmitter works

A contactless sensor reads the position of a rotating element tied to the actuator shaft. Because nothing touches the sensing element, there is no potentiometer track to wear out, which is the main failure point of older contact-type position transmitters. The electronics convert the position into a 4-20 mA current. The operating angle is set to match the valve travel anywhere from 30° to 90°, and the action can be set direct or reverse so that 4 mA corresponds to closed or open as the control system expects.

The signal is a passive loop: the 2030 draws its power from the loop, so it needs a 24 V supply or an input card providing loop power in the control system. A manually adjustable cam sets the switch positions when limit switches are fitted, allowing the open and closed indications to be set precisely during commissioning.

Where the 2030 fits in the system

The 2030 is a feedback device, not a positioner. It sits on the actuator alongside a positioner, solenoid valve and filter regulator. Mounting follows either the STI standard 8 mm shaft or the VDI/VDE 3845 interface so it can fit actuators of other brands as well. On linear valves it is normally used with a motion converter such as the IMI STI MC, which changes linear stem travel into a rotary input.

It is part of the STI positioner and partial-stroke-testing family, which also includes the SHP smart positioner and the CRP-3/M analog positioner.

Selection and ordering checklist for 2030

  • Position transmitter alone, or with two or four limit switches.
  • Switch contact type: silver cadmium oxide for general duty, gold plated for low-level circuits, or a 2-wire inductive proximity sensor.
  • Hazardous area: standard IP66 enclosure, or the ATEX / IECEx Eexd IIC T6 version; confirm zone and gas group.
  • Housing material: painted aluminium or stainless steel 316.
  • Operation shaft: STI 8 mm or VDI/VDE 3845.
  • Required operating angle between 30° and 90° and direct or reverse action.
  • Certified cable glands and plugs if the explosion-proof version is selected.

Installation and commissioning of the 2030

Fit the correct mounting bracket for the actuator interface, align the transmitter shaft with the actuator output and fix the cover. Wire the 4-20 mA loop through the 1/2″ NPTF entry. Move the valve to one end of its stroke, set the corresponding current, then set the other end and confirm the span and direction. Finally adjust the cam on limit-switch versions so that each switch changes state at the intended position.

In explosion-proof installations the flameproof cover joint must stay clean and undamaged, so protect it during opening and use only certified glands. Test the loop with the valve at several intermediate positions to check linearity and check the 4-20 mA reading against the local indicator or stroke.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

Position feedback is required wherever remote shutdown or modulating valves must be proven in position. In Oman and the GCC that includes wellhead and pipeline valves, gas-processing trains, power plant steam and fuel-gas valves, and desalination intake and brine valves. The IP66 enclosure resists dust and washdown, and the listed ambient range of -40 to 85 °C covers desert summers and sun-heated actuators. The stainless steel housing is the sensible option for coastal and offshore sites.

Scotch yoke actuators give their highest torque at the start and end of the stroke. That is where a ball, plug or butterfly valve needs the most break-out and seating torque, so a Scotch yoke can be smaller than a rack-and-pinion actuator for the same valve. A canted yoke moves the torque peak toward one end of the stroke, for valves whose highest demand is when they close. A symmetrical yoke gives the same curve in both directions.

Where IMI STI products are used

In the GCC, IMI STI actuators and positioners appear mostly on emergency shutdown (ESD) and blowdown valves, compressor anti-surge valves, steam turbine bypass valves and large dampers in oil and gas, refining, petrochemical and power plants. On shutdown valves the SHP-SIS positioner adds partial stroke testing, so the valve can be proven to move without taking the plant down.

Ordering and replacement: what we need

For an actuator, send the full model code from the nameplate, the valve type and size, required torque or thrust with safety factor, supply medium and pressure, fail position (fail-close, fail-open or fail-last), stroke time, mounting flange (ISO 5211) and stem adaptor, ambient temperature range and the hazardous-area certification required. For a positioner, send the model, actuator type, signal (4-20 mA, HART), whether partial stroke testing or a SIL rating is needed, and the cable entry thread. When a series has been superseded, we quote the successor that IMI names in its documentation and point out any differences in mounting or signal.

FAQ

Questions about the IMI STI 2030 Electronic Position Transmitter 4-20 mA

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01What output does the IMI STI 2030 give?
It gives a 4-20 mA signal on a passive, loop-powered circuit. The signal represents valve position over an operating angle adjustable between 30° and 90°, with direct or reverse action.
02Is the 2030 available for hazardous areas?
Yes. The model selection sheet lists an ATEX / IECEx Eexd IIC T6, IP66 version. Certified plugs and cable glands must be used, and an M20 x 1.5 adapter, certified for such areas, can be supplied if required.
03What limit switch options are offered on the 2030?
You can choose no limit switches, two, or four. Types are a mechanical SPDT with silver cadmium oxide contacts, a mechanical SPDT with gold plated contacts, or an inductive proximity switch.
04Can the 2030 be used on actuators from other makers?
The operation shaft can be the STI standard 8 mm or built to VDI/VDE 3845, which is the common interface for mounting accessories on quarter-turn actuators.
05Why is the 2030 described as contactless?
Its sensor reads the position without a physical contact element such as a potentiometer track. The manufacturer states this improves reliability because there is nothing to wear out in the sensing path.
