IMI STI FasTrak FTC Compact HART Valve Positioner
Description
IMI STI FasTrak FTC compact HART digital valve positioner
The IMI STI FasTrak FTC (FasTrak Compact) is a digital-pneumatic valve positioner that takes a 4–20 mA command, with HART communication, and positions a pneumatic actuator accordingly. It is designed for single and double acting actuators, with or without return springs, and for both linear and rotary valves. Seven Star LLC supplies the IMI STI FasTrak FTC in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.
Compared with an analogue positioner, the FTC adds automatic self-calibration, a local display with push-buttons, adjustable speed and stroke limits and embedded position feedback in a compact IP65 housing. That combination suits plants that want smart-positioner functions without the size and cost of a larger device.

How the FasTrak FTC controls the valve
The positioner measures valve position, compares it with the 4–20 mA setpoint and drives a pneumatic stage that adds or removes air from the actuator until the two agree. Because the control is digital, the user can shape the response instead of relying on a fixed mechanical cam and spring. The speed limits slow the valve down where fast stroking would cause water hammer or surge, while stroke limits keep the valve within a defined travel for protection or process reasons.
Auto self-calibration finds the end points of travel and the tuning for the actuator it is mounted on. This reduces commissioning time and makes it easier to re-commission after an actuator or valve overhaul, because the procedure is repeated from the keypad or through HART and does not require a mechanical adjustment of zero and span.
HART communication and diagnostics on the FTC
HART lets a handheld communicator, an asset-management system or the optional IMI STI software read and change the positioner configuration over the same two wires that carry the 4–20 mA signal. Typical uses include checking calibration status, reviewing position and set-point trends, and comparing the behaviour of a valve against a baseline when a loop starts to hunt or a valve sticks. The optional diagnostic software is offered for configuration, monitoring and performance analysis, so state in the enquiry whether it is needed.
The local display and push-buttons allow basic configuration and calibration at the valve without a laptop or communicator, a practical benefit when work is done in a remote location or in a hazardous area where tools are restricted by permit.
Built for harsh and dusty environments
The product page describes an IP65 housing, a corrosion-resistant body and a sealed exhaust arrangement designed for high-humidity or sandy environments. This is relevant for the Gulf, where blown sand and salt-laden air can enter a positioner through its exhaust port. The ambient range of -40°C to +80°C covers cold start-up and hot summer conditions on sun-exposed pipework. Check the temperature rating of the whole loop, including cables and the actuator, as the weakest component sets the limit.
Selection and ordering checklist for the FasTrak FTC
- Actuator type: single or double acting, spring return or not, and whether it is linear or rotary.
- Mounting kit: the bracket and feedback linkage depend on the actuator manufacturer and size, so give the actuator model.
- Supply pressure: must fall in the 1.4 to 8 bar range and be filtered, dry instrument air.
- Air volume and required stroking time: the 0.3 Cv and 23 Nm³/h at 6 bar capacity may call for a volume booster on large actuators.
- Communication: confirm the DCS or asset system supports HART and the version used.
- Hazardous-area marking: if required, request the applicable certificate for the exact model.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the FTC
- Mount the positioner on the actuator with the correct bracket and feedback linkage so travel is transferred without play.
- Connect clean air supply and the actuator output ports, observing the single or double acting arrangement.
- Wire the 4–20 mA loop with screened cable, observing polarity, and confirm the loop can supply the HART signal.
- Run the auto-calibration, then verify travel at 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 per cent of signal.
- Set speed and stroke limits as required by the process.
- Record the as-left configuration for the plant database.
In service, periodically check the filter regulator upstream, confirm that the exhaust is not blocked by dirt or insects, and compare position feedback with the command signal. A spare unit of the same model shortens downtime on critical control valves.
Typical FasTrak FTC applications in Oman and the GCC
In Oman and the GCC, digital positioners of this size are used on control valves in oil and gas gathering and processing, power-plant auxiliary systems, desalination plants and petrochemical units. The FTC fits compact actuators on skid-mounted packages, where space is limited, and larger valves when combined with a booster. Its HART function helps maintenance teams monitor valves located in remote sites without sending a technician to each device, which is attractive for wellheads and distributed utility valves.
Related IMI STI accessories for the FTC
The FTC is often installed with other IMI STI pneumatic accessories. The AV volume booster raises air flow to large actuators, the UD derivative unit speeds up controlled exhaust, and the SL exhaust protection system protects exhaust ports in dusty areas. For plants that prefer a pneumatic instrument without electronics, the SR/CCK analog positioner is the quarter-turn alternative driven by a 3–15 psi signal.

Scotch yoke actuators give their highest torque at the start and end of the stroke. That is where a ball, plug or butterfly valve needs the most break-out and seating torque, so a Scotch yoke can be smaller than a rack-and-pinion actuator for the same valve. A canted yoke moves the torque peak toward one end of the stroke, for valves whose highest demand is when they close. A symmetrical yoke gives the same curve in both directions.
Where IMI STI products are used
In the GCC, IMI STI actuators and positioners appear mostly on emergency shutdown (ESD) and blowdown valves, compressor anti-surge valves, steam turbine bypass valves and large dampers in oil and gas, refining, petrochemical and power plants. On shutdown valves the SHP-SIS positioner adds partial stroke testing, so the valve can be proven to move without taking the plant down.
Ordering and replacement: what we need
For an actuator, send the full model code from the nameplate, the valve type and size, required torque or thrust with safety factor, supply medium and pressure, fail position (fail-close, fail-open or fail-last), stroke time, mounting flange (ISO 5211) and stem adaptor, ambient temperature range and the hazardous-area certification required. For a positioner, send the model, actuator type, signal (4-20 mA, HART), whether partial stroke testing or a SIL rating is needed, and the cable entry thread. When a series has been superseded, we quote the successor that IMI names in its documentation and point out any differences in mounting or signal.
