Brand:

Samson 4708 Supply Pressure Regulator, 12 bar max

Description

Samson 4708 supply pressure regulator with built-in filter

The Samson 4708 is a supply pressure regulator for pneumatic measuring and control equipment. It takes the pressure of a compressed air network, up to 12 bar (180 psi), and reduces it to a stable, adjustable supply pressure for positioners, actuators and other instruments. Two set point ranges are offered: 0.2 to 1.6 bar (3 to 24 psi) and 0.5 to 6 bar (8 to 90 psi). Seven Star LLC supplies the Samson 4708 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

The 4708 is not one single device but a numbered family. The dash number after 4708 selects the mounting style, body material, filter arrangement and capacity, so a clear definition of the required variant is the first step in any enquiry.

How the 4708 regulates pressure

The regulator works on the force-balance principle. Turning the set point screw changes the tension of the set point spring, which acts against a diaphragm and plug assembly in the body. The output pressure settles where the spring force and the diaphragm force balance. The two set point ranges are obtained by fitting two different springs.

The design includes an air blow-off function and low air consumption, and the output depends only slightly on the upstream pressure: below 0.01 bar for a 1 bar change in supply pressure on the standard 4708-xx. A filter cartridge sits inside the regulator, and condensate is drained by opening the screw plug half a turn. For versions with a separate filter receptacle the regulator should be mounted with the receptacle hanging downwards.

Materials are chosen in the article code: aluminum mounted parts with a plastic body, completely aluminum, completely stainless steel, or stainless fittings on a plastic body. Optional parts include one or two pressure gauges, copper-free gauge versions, a transparent, aluminum or stainless receptacle and special coatings.

Selecting a 4708 for a positioner or actuator

For attached use the datasheet gives a selection table that links positioner, actuator and actuator area to a regulator type. As a general reading, Type 4708-55 serves smaller actuators and certain positioner combinations, Type 4708-53 and -54 are used on positioner and rotary actuator combinations, and Type 4708-64 is used for direct attachment to Type 3277 actuators from 175 to 750 cm² where no accessories are hooked up. Larger actuators of 700 cm² and above with hooked-up accessories call for a separately mounted 4708-1x or 4708-45 with piping.

Because these assignments depend on the exact actuator and positioner, we recommend sending us the nameplate details so the correct dash number can be confirmed against the datasheet table rather than guessed.

Selection and ordering checklist for the 4708

  • Required set point range: 0.2 to 1.6 bar or 0.5 to 6 bar.
  • Mounting: pipe, panel, rail, universal bracket, or direct onto a positioner or actuator.
  • Air capacity: standard 4708-xx or increased capacity 4708-45.
  • Thread type: ISO 228/1 G or NPT.
  • Body and mounted-part material: aluminum or stainless steel; copper-free if required.
  • Pressure gauges: none, one or two, and their dial units.
  • Filter: built in, separate receptacle, and mesh size of 20, 15 or 5 µm.
  • Temperature range, which can extend to –50 °C in the low-temperature versions.

Installation and maintenance of the 4708

To limit condensate, install the regulator as close as possible to the compressor or air receiver, or directly at the instrument it feeds. Place it either in the pipeline or in a panel cut-out. Keep the supply at least 1 bar above the set point, as the datasheet recommends for the 4708-45, and drain the filter regularly. In Gulf climates, humid summer air carries much more water, so draining intervals and instrument air drying matter more than the regulator itself.

If the output creeps upward or drifts, inspect the filter cartridge, the seat and plug and the diaphragm. Always turn the set point screw slowly and lock the nut after setting.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

Supply pressure regulators like the Samson 4708 are used on control valve skids in oil and gas, on cooling water and chemical dosing valves in desalination and power stations, and on petrochemical process units where every positioner needs a clean, constant air supply. Stainless steel versions suit coastal and offshore salt-laden air. Dust and heat are routine, so closed filter designs and correct drainage are worth specifying.

About brand

SAMSON is a German manufacturer of control valves, actuators, positioners and self-operated regulators. Hermann Sandvoss founded the company in Düsseldorf on 1 April 1907, and its first important product was a thermostatic valve that controlled temperature without external power. After moves to Mannheim, SAMSON settled in Frankfurt am Main in 1916, where SAMSON AG is still headquartered.

Seven Star LLC supplies Samson control valves, pneumatic actuators and positioners to process plants in Oman, including the types listed on this page and their replacement units.

Milestones

  • 1907: Hermann Sandvoss founds the company in Düsseldorf.
  • 1909: It is re-established as SAMSON Apparatebau GmbH.
  • 1916: After a period in Mannheim, the company moves to Frankfurt am Main.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types

Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.

Among the positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.

Where Samson valves are used

Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.

Ordering Samson parts: what we need

Every Samson device has a nameplate with the type, a configuration ID (Var-ID) and a serial number. A photo of that plate is the surest route to an exact match. Without it, please send:

  • Valve: type, DN or NPS, pressure rating, body and trim material, Kvs or Cv, plug and seat style, packing and bonnet type
  • Actuator: type, effective area in cm², bench range, fail action and travel
  • Positioner: full type code including Ex protection, communication and options such as limit switches or position transmitter

We check the code against Samson documentation and provide the manufacturer's data sheet on request.

Facts checked against SAMSON's corporate chronicle and press material, October 2026.

FAQ

Questions about the Samson 4708 Supply Pressure Regulator, 12 bar max

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01What set point ranges does the 4708 offer?
Two ranges: 0.2 to 1.6 bar (3 to 24 psi) and 0.5 to 6 bar (8 to 90 psi). They are obtained by using two different set point springs.
02What is the maximum supply pressure?
The regulator reduces network pressure of up to 12 bar (180 psi). The standard 4708-xx needs 1.6 bar or more; the 4708-45 works from 1 bar.
03How is the 4708-45 different from other types?
It is the increased air capacity version with G ½ or ½-14 NPT connections and a 15 µm filter cartridge.
04Can a 4708 be mounted directly on a positioner?
Yes. Types 4708-53 to -55 are for direct attachment to positioners, and 4708-62 and -64 attach to Type 3277 and 3372 actuators.
05Are copper-free versions available?
Yes. Optional pressure gauges with a CrNiMo steel housing and either brass or fully stainless measuring elements are listed, with a fully stainless gauge giving a copper-free device.
