Reliable MV Medium Velocity Directional Water Spray Nozzle

Description

The Reliable MV medium velocity directional spray nozzle is a non-automatic open nozzle for fixed water spray and deluge systems. An internal deflector discharges a solid, cone-shaped pattern with small droplets, so the nozzle can apply water to vertical, horizontal, curved and irregular surfaces. Bulletin 106 (August 2024) states cULus Listed and FM Approved and lists seven orifice sizes and eight discharge angles in unfinished brass or electroless nickel PTFE (ENT).

How the MV nozzle is used

MV nozzles are commonly used in deluge systems for special-hazard fire protection, where they are fixed on a pipe, aimed at the protected surface and supplied when a deluge valve opens. The bulletin provides spray pattern graphs for each of eight nozzle angles installed at nine fixed angles from 0 degrees (straight down) through 90 degrees (horizontal) to 180 degrees (straight up), plotted for residual pressures of 20 to 60 psi (1.4 to 4.1 bar). The designer selects the fixed angle first and then the nozzle angle. The transition distance, where the trajectory changes from momentum-driven to gravity-driven, is given for reference only and is not part of the FM Approval.

Key features from the bulletin

  • Non-automatic fixed pattern with solid cone discharge.
  • Seven orifice sizes and eight discharge angles, each size available in every angle.
  • Brass frame, deflector pin and deflector; optional elastomer blow-off plug marked by K-factor.
  • ENT finish is cULus Listed and FM Approved as corrosion resistant.

Ordering code decoding

The part number follows the chart printed as 4EØ YY KK AAA in Bulletin 106: YY is the finish (11 for brass, 43 for ENT), KK the K-factor code from the table above, and AAA the nozzle angle (065, 080, 095, 110, 125, 140, 160 or 180). Derived from the chart, a brass K5.6 nozzle with a 125 degree angle uses 11, 56 and 125 in those positions. Specify finish, K-factor, angle and, if required, the optional blow-off plug and the Model W2 wrench.

Installation and maintenance notes

Install to NFPA standards and the local authority, using only the Model W2 wrench and not exceeding the torque. NFPA 15 requires a main pipeline strainer for systems using nozzles with waterways smaller than 3/8 in (9.5 mm) and wherever the water is likely to contain obstructive material. Keep nozzles in their original packaging until installed, keep a stock of spares, and inspect and maintain to NFPA 25. Patterns were tested in still air, so outdoor systems must allow for wind, and obstructions must be considered in the layout.

Typical applications

Water spray nozzles protect transformers, turbines, fuel and chemical process equipment, conveyors and tanks. These hazards are common in Gulf oil and gas, power and petrochemical sites, where the directional pattern lets the designer cool a specific surface. Confirm the design basis and local approval for your project.

Selection and installation notes

Sprinklers, nozzles and valves are chosen by the system designer from the hazard classification, the coverage, the K-factor, the temperature rating and the pressure the water supply can deliver, and the system must be designed, installed and commissioned by qualified people to the standard and authority rules that apply to the project. Confirm the finish, the orientation, the response type and the temperature rating against the design, use only the wrench the maker specifies, never paint, coat or bend a sprinkler and keep spare sprinklers and a wrench in the cabinet as the rules require. Check the listings and approvals required for the project with the authority before purchase.

Keep a record of the sprinkler type and rating at each location, and protect the units from damage during building work.
