NOSHOK 400 Series Hard Seat Needle Valve 1/4-1-1/2 in NPT

A standard hard seat instrument needle valve with a blow-out proof stem

The NOSHOK 400 Series is a standard hard seat needle valve for instrument lines. It has a blow-out proof stem that gives a secondary stem seal when fully open, an FKM o-ring with a PTFE back-up ring below the threads to protect against corrosion and galling, rolled stem threads and a one-piece bonnet with a metal-to-metal seal. Each valve is 100% helium leak tested to 1 x 10-4 ml/s, according to the datasheet.

Body materials are zinc-nickel plated steel or electropolished 316 stainless steel, which meets NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-3, and the datasheet states conformance to MSS SP-99 (instrument valves) and, with packing, MSS SP-132.

400 Series specification

Connection size codes: 02 = 1/4 in NPT; 03 = 3/8; 04 = 1/2; 06 = 3/4; 08 = 1; 10 = 1-1/4; 12 = 1-1/2; 42 = 7/16-20 UNF. Valve types: MFC/MFS male-female steel/stainless; FFC/FFS female-female; MFAC/MFAS and FFAC/FFAS angled.

Order code explained

Example: 404-FFC is a 400 series hard seat valve (4), 1/2 inch NPT (04), female-female steel (FFC). The datasheet shows a build with all options as 404-FFC-P1-T1-PM2-HL5: PTFE packing (P1), non-rotating 316 stem tip (T1), panel mount with 2 nuts (PM2) and 1-3/4 inch phenolic handle (HL5). Other tips are ball tips (carbide, 440C, ceramic, Monel) and a non-rotating regulating tip (T9). O-ring options are EPDM (EM1), FFKM (KZ1) and NBR (NB1). When packing is selected, o-ring options are not available, and packing is not available on 3/4 to 1-1/2 inch valves.

Selection notes

• Use the 1/4 to 1/2 inch NPT sizes for gauge, transmitter and sampling lines; use 3/4 to 1-1/2 inch sizes where a larger Cv of 2.70 is needed.
• Pick stainless steel for chloride or sour environments; zinc-nickel plated steel for general plant air and oil.
• For temperatures above 200 F consult the pressure versus temperature chart for packing styles in the NOSHOK catalog; the printed ratings are at 200 F.
• Choose panel-mount versions (PM1, PM2) for instrument panels.

Applications in Oman and the GCC

Needle valves isolate gauges and transmitters, throttle sampling flows and bleed instrument lines on oil, gas, chemical and water plants. The helium leak test and blow-out proof stem matter on gas service. For coastal GCC plants, order the 316 stainless version to resist salt spray.

Features that matter in instrument tubing

Instrument needle valves are small parts that carry large consequences, so the construction details in the datasheet are worth reading. The stem is blow-out proof: in the fully open position a secondary seal holds, so a stem cannot be ejected by line pressure. The FKM o-ring with a PTFE back-up ring sits below the stem threads, so the threads are out of the process fluid, which reduces corrosion and galling. The bonnet is a single piece with a metal-to-metal seal to the body, so the valve has no gasket that can creep, and a slotted spring pin stops accidental loosening. The standard valve has a T handle that matches the body material. Weight rises from about 1.3 lb to 6 lb with size, so large hex bodies need pipe support. The male-female type threads straight into a process tee, while female-female types fit between tubing adapters. Angle patterns turn the flow 90 degrees, which saves space at panel edges.

When you enquire about the 400 Series needle valve, state the NPT size from one quarter to one and a half inch, steel or 316 stainless steel, and the working pressure up to the 10,000 psi at 200 F rating, so that the hard seat valve can be configured.

Selection and installation notes

A needle valve is chosen from the thread size and type, the pressure rating and the body material. Use a thread sealant that suits the fluid, tighten the connections without over-torquing, open the valve slowly to avoid shock to the instrument and keep the packing nut adjusted. Check the valve for leakage after the first pressurisation.
