Explosion-proof pressure transmitters for oil field and gas service

The NOSHOK 621/622 Series is a family of stainless steel pressure transmitters approved by Factory Mutual and the Canadian Standards Association for explosion-proof use. The 621 has a threaded process connection with a 316 stainless steel body and Elgiloy diaphragm on higher ranges; the 622 is the flush-diaphragm version, with an NBR o-ring and an optional FKM o-ring. A Hastelloy C flush diaphragm version is listed as 622H. Ranges run from vacuum through 0 to 15,000 psig, with absolute ranges from 0-15 psia to 0-100 psia.

The datasheet quotes NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 compliance and an ANSI/ISA-12.27.01 approved single seal, and lists the applications as chemical processing, gas pressure measurement, oil field and offshore, mining and well head measurement.

Order code explained

The datasheet builds the part number in a fixed order. Example: 621-500-1-1-8-6-ST8 means 621 series, 0-500 psig, accuracy code 1 (+/-0.25%), output code 1 (4-20 mA 2-wire), process connection 8 (1/2 inch NPT male), electrical connection 6 (1/2 inch NPT male conduit with 6 ft integral cable) and option ST8 (threaded orifice, 621 only).

Selection and installation notes

Match the temperature class to the process: the T6, T5 and T4 media limits above are different, so check which class your zone requires.
The datasheet gives hazardous location approvals for the 621 and 622 as printed; confirm the exact marking on the unit and your area classification before installation.
Use the 2-wire 4-20 mA output for long runs; the 3-wire voltage outputs need the supply voltages shown.
Choose 622 flush diaphragm for viscous or clogging media and 621 for clean fluids; the flush version also has weld-on adapters.
Wiring: red V+, black V- on 2-wire; red V+, black common and brown output on 3-wire, with a gray ground wire.

Applications in Oman and the GCC

Well head measurement, gas gathering, choke and kill lines, chemical dosing skids and mining all appear in the datasheet. In the GCC the 621/622 suits oil and gas field instrumentation and process plants where an explosion-proof, IP67 transmitter is specified. The ambient limits go up to 105 C on T4, but the compensated range is 0 to 80 C, so protect the unit from direct sun and radiant heat in hot desert conditions.

Reading the temperature classes

The datasheet splits the temperature limits by class. At T6 the media may be -40 to 55 C and the ambient -40 to 60 C, at T5 the limits rise to 70 C media and 75 C ambient, and at T4 to 100 C media and 105 C ambient. Higher classes allow hotter surroundings but only where the area classification permits them, so pick the class from the hazardous area drawing, not from the process alone. The output code decides wiring: 4-20 mA needs 10 to 30 Vdc, the low power 1-5 V code needs 6 to 30 Vdc, and the 0-10 V code needs at least 14 Vdc. For ranges 500 psig and above the 621 uses an Elgiloy element and the 622 flush diaphragm is limited to 8,000 psig, which is why the 10,000 and 15,000 psig options are only listed for the 621 threaded version.

Selection and installation notes

A pressure instrument is selected from the pressure range, the process media and the connection. Choose a range so that the normal operating pressure lies in the middle of the scale, check that the wetted materials suit the fluid, use the correct seal and thread, fit an isolation valve or snubber where pulsation or surges occur and mount the instrument where it can be read and serviced. Never exceed the overpressure limit on the data sheet, and keep a record of calibration.

In a hazardous area, check the certification marking against the zone, gas group and temperature class of the site, use cable glands and conduit seals approved for the protection method, and install intrinsically safe equipment only with approved barriers or isolators. Do not open the enclosure when the area is live.
