Samson Type 3755 Pneumatic Volume Booster, KVS 2.5

Description

Type 3755 pneumatic volume booster for faster actuator response

The Samson Type 3755 is a pneumatic volume booster, also called an air capacity amplifier. It sits between a positioner and a pneumatic actuator and supplies the actuator with an air flow whose pressure equals the positioner signal pressure, but with a much larger volume. Seven Star LLC supplies the Type 3755 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier based in Muscat.

Large diaphragm and piston actuators fill and empty slowly through the small outputs of a typical positioner. The 3755 solves this: with KVS 2.5 m³/h for both supply and exhaust, a 1:1 signal-to-output ratio and low hysteresis, it speeds up stroking without changing the control signal. It is intended for actuators with an effective area of 1000 cm² or more, or a travel volume of 6 litres or more.

Decoding the Type 3755 article code

The 3755 article code defines the body, exhaust and thread through a set of single digits. The options that the data sheet prints are:

How the 3755 boosts air flow

When the positioner raises its signal, pressure above the diaphragm rises, and the pressure difference opens the supply plug. Supply air up to 10 bar then flows to the actuator until the pressure under the diaphragm balances the signal. When the positioner lowers the signal, the exhaust plug opens and the actuator is vented through the exhaust port. A balanced plug keeps the reversing pressure constant, and the filter disk gives low noise on the -1 version.

The bypass restriction screw lets a small amount of air pass directly and tunes the booster to the loop. It has a linear characteristic and a lock nut. Its setting is part of loop tuning and should be adjusted while watching the step response of the actual valve.

Where the 3755 fits next to positioners and lock-up valves

The booster is mounted in the signal line between the positioner output and the actuator, with air flowing from the supply port to the actuator port as the arrow on the body shows. In loops that also use a Type 3709 lock-up valve for fail-in-place behaviour, the Samson application drawings place the volume booster upstream of the lock-up valve. The booster works together with the positioner of the valve, so the positioner output pressure must lie within the signal limits of the booster.

Selection checklist for the Type 3755

  • Actuator size: effective area of at least 1000 cm² or travel volume of at least 6 litres.
  • Body material: aluminum or stainless steel; the stainless version is rated for IP66 and has a higher weight.
  • Exhaust: sintered filter disk for silent venting, or a threaded exhaust piped away.
  • Thread standard: G or NPT, to match instrument-air tubing.
  • Temperature: standard version to –40 °C or low-temperature version to –55 °C.
  • Pressure: actuator and signal lines are limited to 7 bar, supply to 10 bar.
  • Safety use: aluminum body, standard temperature, and review the safety manual SH 8393 first.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the 3755

Mount the unit close to the actuator. For the IP44 rating of the aluminum body, the exhaust side must face downward or sideways. Use clean, dry air meeting ISO 8573-1 classes, because the plug seals and filter disk are sensitive to oil and particles. After installation, set the bypass restriction while observing the step response, then lock and lead-seal it. Periodically inspect the filter disk for clogging or corrosion deposits and replace diaphragm and seals during shutdowns if the control becomes sluggish or leaks to atmosphere.

Typical 3755 applications in Oman and the GCC

Volume boosters are used on large control valves and dampers where stroking time matters: anti-surge and compressor recycle valves, large butterfly valves in cooling water and seawater lines, boiler and turbine bypass valves, and large diaphragm actuators in power stations, desalination and gas plants. In hot, dusty coastal conditions in Oman, the stainless steel body with threaded exhaust piped to a clean area limits ingress and corrosion, while the aluminum version is the lighter option for sheltered locations.

About brand

SAMSON is a German manufacturer of control valves, actuators, positioners and self-operated regulators. Hermann Sandvoss founded the company in Düsseldorf on 1 April 1907, and its first important product was a thermostatic valve that controlled temperature without external power. After moves to Mannheim, SAMSON settled in Frankfurt am Main in 1916, where SAMSON AG is still headquartered.

Seven Star LLC supplies Samson control valves, pneumatic actuators and positioners to process plants in Oman, including the types listed on this page and their replacement units.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types

Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.

Among the positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.

Where Samson valves are used

Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.

Ordering Samson parts: what we need

Every Samson device has a nameplate with the type, a configuration ID (Var-ID) and a serial number. A photo of that plate is the surest route to an exact match. Without it, please send:

  • Valve: type, DN or NPS, pressure rating, body and trim material, Kvs or Cv, plug and seat style, packing and bonnet type
  • Actuator: type, effective area in cm², bench range, fail action and travel
  • Positioner: full type code including Ex protection, communication and options such as limit switches or position transmitter

We check the code against Samson documentation and provide the manufacturer's data sheet on request.

Facts checked against SAMSON's corporate chronicle and press material, October 2026.

FAQ

Questions about the Samson Type 3755 Pneumatic Volume Booster, KVS 2.5

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01When is a volume booster like the Type 3755 needed?
The data sheet recommends it with positioners on pneumatic actuators that have an effective area of 1000 cm² or more, or a travel volume of 6 litres or more, to raise the positioning speed.
02What is the flow coefficient of the 3755?
KVS is 2.5 m³/h for both supply and exhaust, and the bypass restriction has a KVS of 0.3 m³/h. The signal-to-output pressure ratio is 1:1.
03What are the maximum pressures for the Type 3755?
Supply is up to 10 bar (145 psi), while the signal and actuator connections are rated up to 7 bar (101.5 psi). The response pressure is 80 mbar standard or 100 mbar in the low-temperature version.
04Can the 3755 be used in a safety function?
The data sheet says it is suitable for safety-instrumented systems up to SIL 2 as a single device and SIL 3 with redundant valves, but only in the standard temperature range with the aluminum body. The safety manual SH 8393 applies.
05What does the bypass restriction do?
It is an adjustable screw that matches the booster response to the control loop. Its setting can be locked with a lock nut and lead-sealed to prevent changes.
