Brand:

Speakman GravityFlo SE-4000 21-Gallon Portable Eyewash

Description

The Speakman GravityFlo SE-4000 is a gravity-fed portable emergency eyewash with a 21 US gallon (about 79 L) tank. It is intended for locations that have no plumbed potable water, such as remote work sites, temporary camps, shutdown areas and laboratories, and also as a temporary backup where a plumbed station is out of service. The one-piece high-density polyethylene tank is bright blue, with a molded-in carry handle.

The page rates the flow at 0.4 gpm for 15 or more minutes, in line with the 15-minute flushing period that ANSI/ISEA Z358.1 expects for eyewash equipment, and the instruction sheet states that the unit meets ANSI Z358.1 for portable eyewash units and ANSI A117.1 for barrier-free design. It includes a wall bracket and a side port that can be fitted with an optional drench hose.

Filling, testing and cleaning

The sheet requires the 21 gallon tank to be filled with clean potable water, and it insists that the tank be refilled every time the unit is activated for any reason, otherwise the full 15 minutes cannot be guaranteed. It recommends weekly testing with the supplied record tags. For cleaning, replace the water daily where quality is suspect or temperatures swing widely; weekly, add 1/2 cup (4 fl oz) of liquid bleach to 21 gallons, leave it 15 minutes, drain and rinse several times, then refill. The unit should not be allowed to freeze or overheat, and the container is for use only with potable water or eyewash solutions made for portable units.

Selection and ordering guide

Speakman lists other gravity-fed sizes (SE-4300 with drench hose and the 9 gallon SE-4400) and pressurized stainless units (SE-590 and SE-591). The SE-4000 is the one to take if you want the full 21 gallon reserve and a simple, unpressurized design with no air charge to maintain.

Installation notes

Locate the unit so it takes no more than 10 seconds to reach and within 100 ft of the hazard, in a well-lit area. Fasten the tubular bracket to wall studs with the four lag screws, or check masonry fixings with a building contractor; the wall must carry 300 lb vertically. Cradle the tank on the support strap in the middle of the bracket, do not let the tank ears touch the side arms, fit the drain plug, fill, test the flow by pulling down the spray arm, then date the tag and fit the tamper-evident tie. Wear safety goggles when drilling into masonry.

Applications in GCC industry

A self-contained eyewash is useful at shutdown work fronts, pipeline and construction camps, remote pump stations, tank-cleaning sites and any area where a trench or pipe supply does not exist. Because the water sits in the tank, warm ambient temperatures call for regular replacement and a shaded location, which is consistent with the sheet warning not to let the unit overheat.

Installation and selection notes

A portable gravity unit must be filled with clean water, kept at the temperature range stated by the standard and checked at the interval in the maintenance instructions. Place it where it can be reached within the time limit, and train staff on use. The water in the tank needs periodic replacement and the use of preservative additive where the data sheet recommends it.
