Gewiss GW70253 DC Rotary Isolator 16A 4P PV IP66

GW70253 is a direct-current rotary isolator from the Gewiss 70 RT HP range for photovoltaic strings: four poles, 16 A, rated insulation voltage 1500 Vdc, in an insulating surface-mounting box rated IP66/IP67/IP69 with double insulation. Pre-marked 12 mm knock-outs accept MC4 connectors, so string cables can enter the box directly.

DC isolation for solar strings and inverters

Photovoltaic isolators must break direct current, which is harder than breaking AC because there is no natural current zero. The datasheet therefore gives the rated operational current in DC-PV2 / DC-21B duty for several voltages and wiring configurations rather than a single AC-style figure. At 600 Vdc the isolator carries 29 A in configuration A2+2 and 16 A in A4; at 1200 Vdc it carries 9 A (A2+2, A4) and 16 A in the A4B/A4O/A4U configurations; at 1500 Vdc it carries 3 A (A2+2, A4) and 16 A (A4B/A4O/A4U).

That means the wiring configuration decides how much DC voltage the device can interrupt, so the installer must pick the connection diagram from the datasheet that matches the string voltage. Gulf PV plants with 1000-1500 Vdc systems should read these figures closely.

For a PV string combiner or inverter input, match the number of strings, string voltage and the wiring configuration (A2+2, A4, A4B, A4O or A4U) to the Ie table; at 1500 Vdc only the A4B/A4O/A4U wiring keeps the full 16 A rating.

The 70 RT HP range also has AC isolators from 16 to 160 A (for example GW70320M on this site); do not use an AC-rated isolator on a DC circuit.

Installation and operation notes

Use the 12 mm knock-outs for MC4 entries or the larger 20/25 mm knock-outs for glands; keep each entry sealed to hold IP66-IP69. Terminal section is 4-10 mm2.

Wire exactly to the configuration diagram that gives the Ie you need; the knob can be locked with up to three padlocks for maintenance.

Because string voltage and wiring configuration both change the DC rating, record the open-circuit voltage of the string at the lowest expected module temperature and compare it with the Ie table; the figures printed here (3 A at 1500 Vdc in the A2+2 and A4 configurations, 16 A in A4B/A4O/A4U) show how sharply the interruptible current falls when more voltage must be broken by fewer contact gaps.

Roof-top and ground-mounted solar plants, solar water-pumping, PV carports and hybrid sites in Oman and the Gulf use DC isolators at the array and inverter ends; the datasheet range of -25 to +60 C and the double-insulated enclosure suit open-air mounting.

Check that enclosure heating in direct summer sun does not push internal temperature beyond +60 C during peak irradiation and load.

Installation and selection notes

Pick the connection diagram from the data sheet that matches the string voltage, since the DC rating changes with the wiring configuration. Use MC4 connectors in the pre-marked 12 mm knock-outs, keep polarity consistent and check that cable glands and connectors maintain the IP66 rating. Place the isolator close to the inverter or string combiner so that the DC side can be disconnected safely during maintenance.
