Roxtec HD 16 Stainless Steel Cable Transit Frame

The Roxtec HD 16 is a high-density cable transit frame in AISI 316 acid-proof stainless steel, made for terminal boxes, junction boxes and enclosures in harsh and hazardous environments. Roxtec states that HD transits take up to 41 cables in a single cut-out and are 50 percent more area-efficient than traditional cable glands. The HD 16 frame has one opening with a 40 x 160 mm packing space; the HD 32 has two openings, and the HD 72 two larger openings of 80 x 180 mm.

Where it replaces cable glands

The Roxtec product sheet says HD transits are certified as a replacement for cable glands and recommends them in offshore applications to improve space efficiency and cost-effectiveness: it quotes halved weight and up to 40 percent more cable capacity. For a junction box with many small instrumentation or control cables, one HD cut-out with Multidiameter modules replaces many individual drilled glands, so the enclosure can be smaller. The system works with armoured and non-armoured cables and allows pre-terminated cables, because modules can be opened and placed around a cable.

The frame is only part of the solution: it must be used with Roxtec HD modules and lubricant, and any Ex or bonding requirement selects a different HD variant. Check the enclosure certification and the cut-out tolerance before ordering.

Selecting between HD 16, HD 32 and HD 72

Pick the frame by the number and size of cables. HD 16 is for a single 40 x 160 mm packing space, HD 32 doubles it in a 130 mm wide frame, and HD 72 is used where larger cables need 80 x 180 mm spaces. How the Roxtec HD 16 works

A cable transit seals the point where cables pass through a wall, a panel or an enclosure. The HD 16 is a stainless steel frame that holds a stack of Roxtec modules around the cables. When the modules are compressed in the frame, they seal against water, dust and rodents. The frame has one opening with a packing space of 40 x 160 mm. Because many cables share one cut-out, the transit takes less space than a row of glands.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes

Cut the opening in the enclosure to the aperture size and fit the frame. Place the modules around each cable, with spare modules or stayplates to fill any free space, then compress the stack as the instructions say. Cables can be pre-terminated, since the modules open around the cable. Check the compression after the installation, and look at the seal at planned maintenance rounds.

Choosing the right size of frame

Count the cables and compare their diameters with the module sizes in the Roxtec selection tool. The HD 16 has one opening and suits a smaller group of cables, while the HD 32 has two openings for a larger group. Choose the large-cable version for cables up to 54 mm. Leave a few spare places for cables added later, and plan the stay plates for the free space.
