Hattersley Fig. 1013 Bronze Horizontal Lift Check Valve PN32

Description

Bronze lift check valve with a replaceable PTFE disc

The Hattersley Fig. 1013 is a bronze, horizontal lift pattern check valve to BS 5154 PN32 Series B. A check valve lets fluid pass in one direction and closes automatically when flow reverses. In this design a glass-filled PTFE disc lifts off its seat under forward flow and drops back when flow stops or reverses. The data sheet lists a robust bronze body, horizontal lift pattern, replaceable PTFE glass-filled disc and taper threaded ends to BS EN 10226 (ISO 7-1, formerly BS 21).

The valve is rated for Group 2 gases and Group 2 liquids, according to the medium line on the data sheet, and is available in six sizes from 1/2 to 2 inch.

Key features

  • Robust, high-quality bronze body with horizontal lift pattern
  • Replaceable PTFE, glass-filled disc; guided disc
  • Threaded cap; taper threaded ends to BS EN 10226 (ISO 7-1, formerly BS 21)
  • BS 5154:1991 PN32 Series B
  • Cap in brass for 1/2 to 1 inch and bronze for 1 1/4 to 2 inch

Derived reading of the pressure-temperature curve: the rating falls from 32 bar to 14 bar at 198 C, so a steam application at saturation temperature needs a pressure well below the cold rating; consult the curve on the data sheet before use.

Selection and ordering guide

Order by figure number and size. Specify UK taper thread to BS EN 10226 unless otherwise agreed. The Fig. 42 on the Hattersley range is a similar horizontal lift bronze check valve at PN32, and Fig. M650 is a cast iron swing pattern; the Fig. 1013 data sheet lists a Series B rating and the PTFE disc, so use it where a soft seat and Series B rating are wanted. Install with flow in the direction cast on the body and the cap uppermost, which is general practice for horizontal lift checks and should be confirmed in Hattersley literature.

Test pressures and the pressure-temperature curve

The sheet prints a shell test of 6 bar (pneumatic) and a seat test of 35.2 bar (hydraulic). Derived value: 35.2 bar is 1.1 times the 32 bar working rating, which is our own observation and not a statement in the sheet. The curve on the data sheet shows the permitted pressure falling as temperature rises and marks the saturated steam line, so the cold rating of 32 bar cannot be used at 198 C where only 14 bar is printed.

For high-temperature or steam service confirm the allowable pressure at the actual operating temperature from the curve itself, and keep a safety margin for pressure surges. Bronze valves of this kind are not normally selected for gas service without checking the Group 2 medium limit printed in the data sheet.

Installation notes

Horizontal lift check valves rely on gravity to close the disc, so they are installed in horizontal pipe runs with the cap upwards. Provide strainers upstream where debris could hold the disc off its seat, and fit unions or isolation valves to allow removal of the cap for disc replacement, one of the stated benefits of the replaceable PTFE disc.

Applications

Common duties are pump discharge lines, boiler feed and make-up lines, hot and cold water services and compressed air in small bore pipework. In the Gulf, bronze check valves of this size are used in plant-room pipework, cooling water make-up and fire pump test lines. The BS 5154 body suits water and general services, while dezincification-resistant material choice depends on local water chemistry and is not specified in the sheet.

Specification checklist before ordering

Confirm the following on the pipework before ordering: the size from 1/2 to 2 inch, the taper thread to BS EN 10226, the medium (Group 2 gas or Group 2 liquids as stated on the sheet), the working pressure up to 32 bar at -10 to 100 C and the installation position. A horizontal lift check needs a horizontal pipe run with the cap uppermost. The sheet prints a pneumatic shell test of 6 bar and a hydraulic seat test of 35.2 bar, which can be quoted to customers who ask for test data.

Handling and storage

Store the valves in their packaging, with the threads protected and free of debris, until they are fitted. Before installation, flush the line so that scale and weld spatter do not hold the PTFE disc off its seat, and use a suitable thread sealant that is compatible with the medium.

Information needed for a quotation

Send the figure number, the size, the quantity, the delivery location in Oman or the GCC and the service conditions of pressure, temperature and medium. If isolation valves, strainers or unions are required, list them in the same request so that the whole line can be quoted together.
