Description
The Swagelok SS-4P4T4 is the threaded-port version of the P4T plug valve: a 316 stainless steel quarter-turn valve with 1/4 in. female NPT ports at both ends. Choose it where the connecting parts are male NPT nipples or pipe, for example drain, vent and isolation points on instrument manifolds. It keeps the series strengths, low torque, a straight-through path and a rating of 3000 psig (206 bar), while the female NPT body gives a smaller Cv of 0.9 than the tube-fitting version.

Female NPT, shorter body
With threads instead of tube fitting nuts, the 1/4 in. female NPT body is 2.09 in. (53.1 mm) long, against 2.17 in. for the tube-fitting SS-4P4T. The catalog flow table gives a Cv of 0.9 for this connection, compared with 1.6 for the tubed valve. At a 1 psi drop it passes 3.3 std ft3/min of air and 0.9 U.S. gal/min of water.
Use thread sealant on the male parts you screw into it and keep the wrench on the body flats.
Operation and limits
The handle is parallel to the flow when the valve is open and turns 90 degrees to close, and the green directional handle makes the state clear. The catalog warns that throttling is meant for forward flow only; reverse-flow throttling may damage the O-ring, and the differential pressure with reverse flow is limited to 150 psig (10.3 bar). The pressure rating of 3000 psig applies up to 200 F, falling to 1000 psig between 300 and 400 F.
Each valve is tested for shutoff at 600 psig (41.3 bar) at the factory.

Swagelok is the American maker of tube fittings and small-bore valves, best known for its two-ferrule compression tube fitting. Fred A. Lennon and Cullen B. Crawford founded it in Cleveland, Ohio, in July 1947 as Crawford Fitting Company to make that fitting. Lennon bought the whole business and the patent in 1948, and the company has been based in Solon, Ohio, since the mid-1960s.

A Swagelok part number can be read directly. In SS-810-6, "SS" is 316 stainless steel, "810" means a 1/2 in. tube fitting (8 sixteenths of an inch, 10 series), and "-6" is a union. A suffix such as "-8" adds a 1/2 in. NPT end, and "M0" marks metric tube, as in SS-12M0-6 for 12 mm. Tube fittings must be made up the same way every time: finger-tight, then 1 1/4 turns for most sizes. A gap inspection gauge confirms the fitting has been pulled up.
