Danfoss 060G3960 MBS 4251 Ex ia Pressure Transmitter 0-10 bar

Description

MBS 4251: an intrinsically safe 0-10 bar transmitter for hazardous areas

The 060G3960 is the Danfoss MBS 4251 in the 0 to 10 bar gauge version. The MBS 4201 and 4251 programme is the intrinsically safe branch of the MBS family: the data sheet states that it is Ex ia IIC T5 to T4 explosion protected under the ATEX directive 2014/34/EU, and lists applicability in zone 0, zone 1 and zone 2 for gases and vapours, with ATEX, IECEx and UKCA certification.

This is the code for plants such as refineries, chemical skids, fuel handling and paint shops, where a standard transmitter is not acceptable inside the hazardous area. The 4251 version has an integrated pulse-snubber against cavitation and liquid hammer.

Using an intrinsically safe loop correctly

Intrinsic safety belongs to the whole loop, not to the transmitter alone. The 4 to 20 mA circuit must run through a certified barrier or isolator whose parameters match the entity values in the certificate, and the cable capacitance and inductance must be checked. Choose the barrier from the certificate, not from the general data sheet.

The pressure part is AISI 316L stainless steel and the product carries marine approval, according to the data sheet. The overload limit is 60 bar (870 psi), so the 10 bar range leaves a safety factor of six against surges, which is derived arithmetic and not a guaranteed figure.

Ordering checks

Before ordering, confirm the zone and gas group, the temperature class that applies to your medium temperature, the certificate you need and the barrier you plan to use. This code is gauge (relative) and not sealed gauge, which affects readings only at the lowest range.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat and can quote 060G3960 if you send the plant data. Do not install the unit in a classified area without the documents printed on the nameplate.

Record the barrier model and the certificate numbers in the loop file, together with the cable type and length. Periodic inspection should include the integrity of the enclosure, the gasket and the plug, because damage to those parts can compromise the explosion protection even when the electronics still work. Spare units should be stored in their packing, dry and clean, until the day of installation.

We prefer to confirm the application before quoting 060G3960: the medium or load, the supply or pressure, the ambient temperature and the standards that apply. A short message with these points avoids the wrong variant being ordered and keeps the project schedule safe.

Where the 0-10 bar MBS 4251 is typically applied

A 0 to 10 bar gauge range covers a large share of the pressures met in utility and process service inside hazardous areas: pump discharge lines, fuel transfer, compressed air and inert gas headers, water and solvent circuits on chemical skids, and supply lines in paint shops. In these applications the transmitter usually feeds a controller or a monitoring system through its 4 to 20 mA signal, and the reading is used for alarms, interlocks or simple trending. The integrated pulse-snubber of the 4251 version makes it the natural choice where the line sees pressure pulsation, fast-acting valves or pumps that start and stop often, because those are the conditions in which cavitation and liquid hammer can disturb the reading or stress the sensing element. Where the line is steady and clean, the MBS 4201 branch of the same programme may also be worth comparing in the Danfoss data sheet.

Selection guidance

Begin with the process: the normal operating pressure should sit comfortably inside the 0 to 10 bar span, so that the signal uses a good part of the 4 to 20 mA range and small changes remain visible. Check the highest pressure the line can reach during upsets against the overload figure in the specification table. Then confirm the medium temperature against the stated limits and against the temperature class required for the zone, since the Ex marking covers a range of temperature classes and the applicable one depends on the conditions. Confirm that the medium is compatible with the AISI 316L wetted parts, that the G 1/4 connection matches the process tapping, and that the IP65 enclosure suits the location. If any of these points falls outside the data sheet, a different code number from the MBS programme should be selected rather than this one.

Installation and commissioning considerations

Mount the transmitter so that the connector and cable can be inspected, and route the cable in line with the plant rules for intrinsically safe circuits, kept separate from non-intrinsically safe wiring. Fit the angular connector carefully and make sure the cable entry is properly secured, because the enclosure rating depends on it. Before energising, check that the barrier or isolator, the cable and the transmitter together satisfy the entity parameters in the certificate, and that the loop documentation is complete. During commissioning, compare the transmitter reading with a reference gauge at a known pressure, and confirm that the control system scaling matches the 0 to 10 bar range so that the displayed value is correct across the span.

How to specify your RFQ

For a quick and accurate quotation, send the code number 060G3960, the quantity and the delivery point. Add the zone and gas group, the medium and its temperature, the normal and maximum pressure, and the certificate you need on the documentation. If the transmitter replaces an existing unit, a photo of the old nameplate helps us confirm that the range, connection and Ex marking match. Tell us the barrier or isolator you intend to use so we can point out any obvious mismatch before you order.

About brand

Danfoss is the Danish engineering group that makes refrigeration and air-conditioning controls, heating components, variable speed drives and mobile hydraulics. Mads Clausen founded it on 1 September 1933 at his parents' farm in Nordborg on the island of Als, after making his first refrigeration expansion valve in 1932. Nordborg is still the group's headquarters, and Danfoss remains controlled by the Clausen family through the Bitten & Mads Clausen Foundation.

Choosing Danfoss products

For solenoid valves, check the operating principle. A direct-operated valve such as EV210B opens even at 0 bar differential pressure. A servo-operated valve such as EV220B needs a minimum differential (typically about 0.3 bar) to open, while an assisted-lift valve such as EV250B works from 0 bar. Coils are ordered separately, so the voltage on the coil (for example 230 V AC or 24 V DC) must match the control circuit. For drives, the VLT family is split by application: FC 51 Micro Drive for small machines, FC 102 HVAC Drive for fans and pumps in buildings, FC 202 AQUA Drive for water, and FC 302 AutomationDrive for demanding industrial duty.

Where Danfoss products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Danfoss drives run pumps, fans and compressors in district cooling plants, water and wastewater stations, desalination and building HVAC. Danfoss pressure switches, transmitters and solenoid valves are built into chillers, refrigeration plants, boilers and hydraulic systems, and AB-QM valves balance chilled-water circuits in large buildings.
