Sensus iPERL Static Electromagnetic Water Meter

Description

The Sensus iPERL is a static electromagnetic water meter that measures flow without any moving parts, using Sensus’s remanent magnetic field technology. It is made in sizes DN 15 to DN 40 for potable water billing and district metering, with a metrological ratio of R800 as standard, which gives measurement that stays linear down to very low flow rates. Sensus describes an expected operational life of 15 years, depending on transmission settings, and the meter can be installed in any orientation without straight pipe lengths before or after it.

Measuring principle and readout

Water flowing through the magnetic field generates a voltage that is proportional to the flow velocity, which is the magnetic-inductive principle shown in the data sheet. Because there is no mechanical element, accuracy does not depend on wear, and the meter detects flow direction automatically. The nine-digit LCD shows six digits for cubic metres and three for litres, and icons indicate radio activity, flow direction, test mode, alarm flags and low battery. SensusRF is integrated for licence-free radio at 433 or 868 MHz, either in a fixed network with repeaters (up to seven hops, self-healing, end-to-end encrypted) or for walk-by and drive-by reading, and wM-Bus is also listed. The sheet quotes drive-by reading at 1000 m distance at 50 km/h with the 868 MHz system.

Selecting a size and checking the water

Choose the size from the permanent flow Q3 and the connection: DN 15 and 20 use G3/4 and G1 threads, DN 25 and 32 use G1 1/4 and G1 1/2, and DN 40 uses G2 or composite flanges to EN 1092-1. Several lay lengths are listed as options. The water must have a conductivity of at least 50 uS/cm for electromagnetic measurement, which is typical of drinking water but should be confirmed for demineralised or treated sources, and the T70 version is needed for warmer water. The approvals are for potable water and billing use under the MID; check which approvals an Omani or GCC utility specification requires before ordering, since these are European certificates.

About brand

Sensus is a water and thermal energy metering manufacturer whose Sensus International business is based in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, Germany. Its range runs from static electromagnetic and ultrasonic meters such as iPERL and Cordonel to volumetric, multijet, turbine and compound meters, with SensusRF radio for fixed-network and walk-by or drive-by reading. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, lists Sensus meters that are backed by the manufacturer data sheets.\n\n

Sensus meter technologies

\n\nSensus International states that it is one of the few global manufacturers offering both leading static metering technologies, electromagnetic and ultrasonic, alongside traditional mechanical meters. Piston meters such as the 620 and 640, the 420 multijet and the DomoJet single jet cover residential and sub-metering duty, while the WP-Dynamic turbine, the WPV-MS compound meter and the MeiStream Plus bulk meter serve larger flows.\n\n

What we need to quote a Sensus meter

\n\nSend the DN, connection or flange drilling, lay length, ratio, temperature class, the approvals your utility requires (MID, OIML R49, ISO 4064 or potable water approvals) and the radio protocol. Note that the North American iPERL+ is documented in US units and standards, separately from the international range.
