Bray Series 6P Pneumatic Positioner for Quarter-Turn Valves

Description

Two-stage pilot relay positioning for quarter-turn control valves

The Bray Series 6P is a pneumatic-to-pneumatic (P/P) positioner for quarter-turn control valves. It uses a 3-15 psi pneumatic control signal and a sensitive two-stage pilot relay to position butterfly and ball valves, standard or segmented, automatically to any angle between 0 and 90 degrees. Bray also recommends it for precise damper control.

The standard unit is double acting and can be converted to single acting for spring-return actuators. It supports split-range operation with easy zero and span adjustment, and it has a high-visibility dome position indicator and three gauges, for signal, output 1 and output 2, as standard. It mounts on any quarter-turn actuator conforming to NAMUR (VDI/VDE 3845).

Options, relay and installation notes

Optional equipment includes special cams for non-standard ranges, a coalescing air filter, position feedback limit switches and a 4-20 mA position feedback transmitter. Bray recommends a coalescing air filter on every positioner to keep dust, moisture and oil away from the relay and nozzle. The unit is field upgradable, and all exposed parts are either stainless steel or powder-coated anodized aluminum for corrosive environments.

High natural frequency and pneumatic damping make the 6P resistant to vibration. The flapper-nozzle input, bellows, feedback cam, span adjustment, auto/manual adjustment and zero adjustment are all accessible on the front of the unit. The operating manual gives mounting, calibration and troubleshooting instructions, and the 6P and its relay can be set for direct or reverse action.

Selecting the 6P versus the 6A

Choose the 6P for robust, simple pneumatic control with no electronics and no external power, for example on damper actuators and butterfly valves in air systems. Where diagnostics, a 4-20 mA signal with fieldbus or SIL service is needed, the Series 6A is the electronic equivalent. Please confirm the actuator single or double action, supply pressure, signal range, fail direction and the mounting bracket for the actuator.

Model Technology Signal

About brand

Bray valves are a familiar sight on water, HVAC and general process lines, mostly as rubber-lined butterfly valves with an actuator bolted on top. Bray International, founded in 1986 in Houston, USA, makes butterfly valves, ball valves and the pneumatic and electric actuators that drive them. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Bray valves and actuators for plants and building services in Oman, including the Series 30/31 and Series 70 listed here.

Bray valves and actuators listed here

Series 30 and Series 31 are the resilient-seated butterfly valves: Series 30 is the wafer body and Series 31 the lug body. They are used for on/off and throttling duty on water, air and other fluids compatible with the seat. The Series 70 is Bray's electric actuator for quarter-turn valves, ordered by torque size and supply voltage, with on/off or modulating control.

Ordering Bray butterfly valves: what we need

For a valve, send the series, size, wafer or lug body, body, disc and seat materials, flange standard and operator type (lever, gear or actuator). For a Series 70 actuator, send the torque size from the nameplate, voltage, and whether it is on/off or modulating. A nameplate photo covers most of this. GCC water projects often specify the seat and disc materials, so quote them exactly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What input signal does the Bray Series 6P use?
A 3-15 psi pneumatic control signal as standard, with a 4-20 mA control option listed in the datasheet.
Can it be used on single-acting actuators?
Yes. The standard positioner is double acting and can be converted to single acting for spring-return actuators.
What supply pressure is needed?
