A stainless steel dome for wash-down, corrosive and vandal-prone areas

The Hanwha Vision XNV-A8084RS is a 5MP AI dome camera built in STS316L stainless steel with a nylon dome. Hanwha rates it IP68 and lists IP66, IP67, ISO 20653 IP6K9K and NSF/ANSI Standard 169, which points to food and beverage plants, washdown areas, water and wastewater sites, ports and coastal installations where aluminium housings corrode or cannot be cleaned with high-pressure jets.

Inside is a 1/2.8 inch CMOS sensor with a 3.3 to 9.3 mm P-iris lens (2.8x; horizontal field of view 99 to 31 degrees), 50 m of Wise IR illumination and the Wisenet 9 chip with dual NPU. The AI engine classifies persons, faces, vehicles and license plates, adds attributes and BestShot thumbnails, and supports people, vehicle and crowd counting, queue management and heatmap. Dynamic privacy masking is available for sites with privacy rules.

Where stainless steel pays off, and what to check

Choose a stainless steel dome where cleaning chemicals, salt air or high-pressure water attack ordinary housings, and where hygiene standards apply. The datasheet gives the material as STS316L, which is a common marine and food-grade stainless grade, but it does not claim suitability for every chemical. If the site uses strong acids or chlorine, state the chemicals in your enquiry so that suitability can be checked with the manufacturer.

The camera operates from -40 to +50 degC, which is a smaller upper limit than the 60 degC of the aluminium XNO-A9084R, so check solar heating in open sun. It runs from 802.3af PoE, and Hanwha lists compatible SBP-series mounts. The datasheet prints both IK10 and IK11 for impact protection in different tables, so quote IK10 for design unless the manufacturer confirms otherwise.

Installation and maintenance guidance

• Use a compatible SBP-series stainless mount so that dissimilar metals do not set up galvanic corrosion at the fixing point.
• Seal the conduit entry correctly; the ingress rating of the camera only holds if the cable entry is sealed as well.
• Run shielded network cable and ground it as the manual describes, especially near motors, variable speed drives and high-voltage equipment.
• Check that the PoE switch or injector port can supply the stated maximum power for the IR at night.
• Clean the dome with water and a mild detergent; abrasive cloths scratch nylon and degrade IR performance.
• Keep firmware up to date through the VMS or Hanwha tools as part of routine maintenance.

Applications in Oman and the GCC

Coastal desalination plants, ports, fish processing facilities, food and beverage factories and wastewater treatment sites in Oman combine salt-laden air, humidity and frequent washing, which is exactly where a stainless dome is justified over a painted aluminium one. In inland sites the main concerns are dust and sun. Because the upper operating temperature is +50 °C, mount the camera under an eave, canopy or sunshield where possible, avoid dark backgrounds that absorb heat, and allow for solar gain on roof-level installations. The IR range and AI detection help on perimeter roads and loading bays that are poorly lit at night.
