Raytec PSTR-i48-HV PULSESTAR i48 Pulsed IR Illuminator

PSTR-i48-HV is the Raytec PULSESTAR PSTR i48 pulsed infra-red illuminator for ANPR and LPR cameras: 48 LEDs at 850 nm, 500 W pulsed lighting drive power, an included 100 to 230 V AC power supply and Ethernet control.

Pulsed illumination with an external pulse-controller power supply

The PULSESTAR PSTR range delivers pulsed infra-red light for capturing number plates on fast-moving vehicles. The datasheet describes up to 980 W of pulsed illumination for the largest model; the i48 produces 500 W of lighting drive power while consuming 25 W on average. Pulsing delivers the highest light on scene while extending LED life and saving energy.

Unlike the single-housing VTS range, PSTR illuminators are fed from an external power supply supplied with the illuminator. Each LED panel can be controlled individually through dedicated channels from the PSU, which suits multi-lane or mobile installations, and a TTL trigger input synchronises pulses with the camera shutter.

HV or LV, and which size

The suffix selects the supply: HV is 100 to 230 V AC with the external PSU included, while PSTR-i48-LV is the 24 V DC version listed in the same datasheet. Sizes run i24, i32, i48, i72 and i96 (260 W to 980 W pulsed); distances for the i48 sit between the i32 (30-35 m at 10 x 10) and the i72 (43-50 m).

Distances are listed as ranges because they depend on the camera and set-up. A 940 nm option and other beam angles are available on request. Confirm camera sync wiring and the lens before ordering.

Installation notes

The i48 weighs 4.5 kg and has an adaptive illumination bracket for mounting; the external PSU is a separate box of 181 x 287 x 107 mm that needs its own mounting space. Raytec publishes an installation guide (1140-D-00011), an engineering guide (1140-D-00007) and a camera connectivity guide for the PULSESTAR range.

The trigger input is TTL (3.3 to 24 V DC), so the camera strobe output must be compatible. The unit also provides a 12 V DC, 1 A output. Operating range is -20 to +45 °C, which needs consideration for exposed Gulf sites in summer.

PSTR illuminators are used for ANPR on roads and tunnels, toll and parking lanes, weighbridges, port gates and checkpoint lanes. Individual panel control helps where several lanes share one gantry, and the wide 35 x 10 degree lens suits close-range entry lanes.

Selection and installation notes

A CCTV illuminator is selected from the camera, the distance and the width of the scene. Match the beam angle to the camera field of view, mount it close to the camera on a stable bracket, keep the lens clear of foliage and glass reflections, check the supply voltage under load and set the light level in the dark, not in daylight. Camera and illuminator should be aimed together at commissioning.
