Kübler Sendix 5863 Multiturn Absolute Encoder SSI BiSS

Description

A mechanical multiturn absolute encoder with optical scanning

The Kübler Sendix 5863 is a solid-shaft absolute multiturn encoder with SSI or BiSS output and optical sensor technology. Position is held in a mechanical gear, so the encoder needs no battery and no backup supply after a power cut, and it can reach a maximum resolution of 29 bits (19 bit singleturn plus 12 bit for 4096 revolutions). The hollow-shaft sibling, the Sendix 5883, is covered on its own page.

The housing is die-cast zinc with a stainless steel shaft and a wide working range of -40 to +90 C (cable version -30 to +75 C). Kübler describes the mechanical gear with optical sensor as insensitive to strong magnetic fields, and cites wind energy and mobile automation as proven applications.

Decoding the 8.5863 order code

Kübler configures the encoder through the type key 8.5863.a b c d.e f 2 g. The positions below are taken from the datasheet; the underlined preferred options on the datasheet are not marked here, so confirm them with the controls integrator.

Position Options
a Flange 1 clamping IP65 / 3 clamping IP67 (58 mm); 2 synchro IP65 / 4 synchro IP67 (58 mm); 5 square IP65 / 7 square IP67 (63.5 mm); 6 servo IP65 / 8 servo IP67 (63.5 mm, US version)
b Shaft 1 = 6 x 10 mm; 2 = 10 x 20 mm; 3 = 1/4 inch x 7/8 inch; 4 = 3/8 inch x 7/8 inch (all with flat)
c Interface / supply 1 SSI/BiSS 5 V; 2 SSI/BiSS 10-30 V; 3 and 4 plus SinCos; 5 and 6 with sensor output; 7, 8, 9 plus RS422 incremental
d Connection 1/A axial cable (1 m or special length), 2/B radial cable, 3 axial M23 12-pin, 4 radial M23 12-pin, 5 axial M12 8-pin, 6 radial M12 8-pin
e Code B = SSI binary, C = BiSS binary, G = SSI gray
f Resolution A = 10 bit ST + 12 bit MT, 1 = 11, 2 = 12, 3 = 13, 4 = 14, 7 = 17, 9 = 19 bit ST
g Options 1 = none, 2 = status LED, 3 = SET button and status LED

Selection and installation notes

Match the flange and shaft to the existing mounting: the datasheet marks the 10 x 20 mm shaft as the preferred type with a clamping flange and the 6 x 10 mm shaft with a synchro flange. Use a bellows coupling (Kübler lists 8.0000.1102.0606 and 8.0000.1102.1010) to protect the bearings from misalignment. Resolution, preset value and counting direction are factory-programmable, so state them when ordering; the SET input or SET button zeros the encoder at any position.

Check that the controller supports SSI or BiSS at the chosen clock rate and supply voltage, and keep unused SET and DIR inputs at 0 V as the datasheet states. For single-turn needs see the optical SICK DFS60B incremental encoder“>SICK DFS60B incremental encoder, or browse other encoders. Please confirm the full order code before ordering.

Documents and quotation

The attached datasheet (07/2026 edition) gives the full order code, technical data, terminal assignment for cable, M23 and M12 versions, dimensions and accessories for the 5863 and 5883. A conformity declaration and the CAD model are published separately by the manufacturer. When requesting a quotation, send the complete type key or the shaft, flange, interface, resolution, connection and cable length required.

About brand

Kübler is a family-owned German manufacturer of encoders and measuring technology, founded in 1960 and based in Villingen-Schwenningen. The company develops and produces rotary encoders, linear measuring systems, inclinometers, counters and displays, signal converters and slip rings for machine builders and plant operators. Seven Star LLC supplies Kübler encoders to industrial customers in Oman and the GCC on inquiry.

Rotary encoders for drives and machinery

The Sendix family covers incremental encoders such as the 5000 and 5020, optical and magnetic absolute encoders with SSI, BiSS or analog outputs, and explosion-protected versions with ATEX and IECEx approvals. One manufacturer can therefore serve drives, cranes, winches, packaging lines and hazardous-area machinery.

Counters, displays and connection technology

The company also lists pulse counters, tachometers, process displays, signal converters, cordsets and connectors that match its encoder range. Choosing the correct variant depends on the shaft or hollow-shaft size, flange, interface, resolution and protection class, and we check every order code against the manufacturer's datasheet before quoting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum resolution of the Sendix 5863?
Up to 29 bits: 19 bit singleturn plus 12 bit multiturn, which is 4096 revolutions.
Does the 5863 need a battery?
No. The multiturn position is stored by a mechanical gear with optical sensor, so no battery or backup supply is needed.
Which interfaces are available?

What is the temperature range?
Working temperature is -40 to +90 C, and -30 to +75 C for the cable version.
What is the difference to the Sendix 5883?
The 5863 has a solid shaft; the 5883 is the through hollow-shaft version of the same family.
