Selectarc Inox 316B E316L-15 Basic Stainless Electrode

Description

Basic-coated 316L electrode for positional work on molybdenum stainless steel

The Selectarc Inox 316B is a low-carbon, basic-coated stainless electrode classified AWS A5.4 E316L-15 and ISO 3581-A E 19 12 3 L B 4 2. Selectarc describes a stable arc, a weld pool that is easy to watch, good slag removal and regular beads, with good behavior in positional welding and on badly prepared joints. The deposit contains about 2.7% molybdenum and about 8% ferrite, and is used for welding and cladding on austenitic Cr-Ni-Mo stainless steels and clad plate.

The manufacturer lists service temperatures from -196 C to +400 C and applications in the chemical and petrochemical industries, in refineries and in shipbuilding, for pipes, tanks and heat exchangers.

Base materials covered

Selectarc lists general-purpose stainless steels of the 316 family: 316 (X5CrNiMo17-12-2, 1.4401), 316L (X2CrNiMo17-12-2, 1.4404), 316LN (1.4406), cast grade J92900 (1.4408), and the stabilized grades 316Ti (1.4571 and 1.4573) and 316Cb (1.4580), with the cast equivalent 1.4581. These are the usual materials for process piping, tanks and heat exchangers exposed to chlorides or mild acids.

As a general rule, a 316L filler is chosen to match the molybdenum content of the parent metal; 308L-type fillers lack the molybdenum and give lower pitting resistance on 316 base metal. Where the joint is between 316L and carbon steel, a higher-alloy 309L-type consumable is normally specified instead.

Handling and welding practice

Basic stainless electrodes should be kept dry. Selectarc gives a redrying cycle of 1 hour at 250 C if needed, and an interpass limit of 150 C, which helps to limit distortion and sensitization on thin sections. Use a short arc, clean the joint and the weld area of grease and oxide, and keep a stringer technique on thin wall pipe. The data sheet lists 2.5 mm at 70 A for roots and thinner material, 3.2 mm at 90 A as a general size and 4.0 mm at 120 A for heavier fill passes.

The 15 in the AWS designation marks a basic coating used on DC electrode positive, in contrast to the rutile -16 and -17 types that also run on AC. Basic coatings generally give a deposit with lower oxygen content and better toughness at low temperature, which is why the data sheet quotes impact values down to -120 C. Verify the ferrite level against the procedure test if the project specifies a ferrite range, because Selectarc quotes the approximate value of 8% as a typical figure.

How the Selectarc Inox 316B Works in Practice

Selectarc Inox 316B is a covered stick electrode for manual metal arc (MMA) welding of molybdenum-alloyed austenitic stainless steels of the 316 family. In MMA welding, the arc melts the core wire and the flux coating. The coating creates shielding gas and slag that protect the molten pool from the air, and the slag is removed after each pass. A basic-type coating is generally chosen when weld soundness and positional capability matter more than cosmetic bead appearance. For the exact classification, recommended current ranges by diameter and the typical chemical analysis, always refer to the official Selectarc technical data sheet.

Selectarc Inox 316B Selection Checklist

  • Confirm the base material grade and thickness against the procedure specification.
  • Check the required classification and any approval demanded by the project or third-party inspector.
  • Match the welding position, joint design and access to the consumable chosen.
  • Verify the polarity and shielding conditions recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Plan storage, handling and traceability so certificates follow the material to the job site.
  • Keep electrodes dry and follow the manufacturer re-drying instructions.

Installation, Handling and Maintenance

Store electrodes in their original packaging in a dry place. Once a pack is opened, keep the rods in a heated holding oven or quiver so they do not pick up moisture. Use the polarity and current recommended on the data sheet, and keep the arc short. Remove all slag and clean between passes with stainless-only brushes so that carbon steel does not contaminate the surface. After welding, pickling and passivation restore the corrosion resistance of the joint.

Typical Applications in Oman and the GCC

Typical uses in Oman and the GCC include process piping, tanks and vessels in the desalination, petrochemical, food and pharmaceutical sectors, as well as maintenance repairs on 316-grade equipment exposed to chlorides and marine atmospheres along the coast.

About brand

Selectarc is a French manufacturer of welding and brazing filler metals, headquartered in Grandvillars, France. Its welding activity began in 1952 with Selectarc Industrie, a plant making covered electrodes, and the business is the welding and brazing division of the family group Viellard Migeon & Compagnie. In 2025 Framatome took a 40% stake in the company.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Selectarc electrodes and wires for fabricators and maintenance workshops in Oman and the GCC.
