Description

Packless shutoff for high-purity and hazardous gas lines

The Swagelok SS-4H is a compact bellows-sealed valve from the Swagelok H series, with a 316 stainless steel body and 1/4 in. Swagelok tube fitting end connections. Instead of stem packing, a precision-formed metal bellows seals the stem, and the body-to-bonnet joint is welded. With no packing to wear or adjust, the valve suits analytical, vacuum, high-purity and toxic gas systems where emissions to atmosphere have to be avoided.

A non-rotating stem tip closes on the seat for repeatable shutoff, and the green anodized aluminum handle is sized for hand operation in panel and manifold layouts. The H series is offered with tube fitting, NPT, VCR, tube socket weld, butt weld and tube extension ends, so the same valve design can be used throughout one system.

Selection and installation notes

Pick the end connection first: tube fittings for general instrument tubing, VCR face seals or weld ends for ultra-clean gas systems. A cobalt-based alloy stem tip is available for severe service by adding S to the ordering number (for example SS-2HS), and -SC11 adds special cleaning and packaging to non-VCR versions. Swagelok advises applying only as much handle torque as is needed for positive shutoff, which protects the stem tip and seat, and periodically lubricating the bonnet and handle threads. For oxygen-enriched systems, refer to the Swagelok oxygen system safety report MS-06-13 before selecting materials.

If you do not have it, give us the tube outside diameter and wall thickness, body material, end connections on each port, working pressure and temperature, and the fluid. For a KPR regulator we also need inlet pressure, the outlet control range and the port configuration.
