GE Multilin 869 Motor Protection Relay

Description

Overview

The GE Multilin 869 is a motor protection and management relay from the Multilin 8 Series, designed by GE for the protection, control and management of medium and large induction and synchronous motors. Motors are the workhorses of any process plant, and the 869 is built to keep them running: it combines an advanced thermal model, stator differential protection, voltage and frequency elements, motor start supervision and condition monitoring functions such as broken rotor bar detection in a single draw-out relay. A fast protection pass that runs every eighth of a cycle gives quick response for current, voltage, power and frequency elements.

Seven Star LLC supplies the GE Multilin 869 to operators of compressors, pumps, fans and conveyors across Oman and the GCC. Our engineers in Muscat review motor nameplate data, CT arrangements and the number of RTDs on the machine, then confirm the correct GE Multilin 869 configuration so that the relay arrives ready for the motor control centre or switchgear panel it is intended for.

Protection Principle

Most motor failures are caused directly or indirectly by overheating, so the heart of the relay is its thermal model. The GE Multilin 869 tracks thermal capacity used by integrating current against motor thermal limit curves, with voltage-dependent curves for high inertia loads that need long acceleration times. Current unbalance increases the calculated heating because negative sequence current produces extra rotor losses, separate cooling constants apply when the motor is running or stopped, and RTD readings from the stator can bias the model so it matches measured winding temperature. Start supervision functions, including time between starts, starts per hour, restart time and start inhibit, stop operators from restarting a hot motor before it has enough thermal capacity.

For internal faults the relay offers stator differential protection in two forms. A traditional dual-slope percent differential uses two CT sets with CT saturation detection and a directional check for both AC and DC saturation, while a core balance arrangement is biased during starting so that inrush does not upset the element. Further elements cover current unbalance, ground fault, jam, undercurrent, mechanical load and voltage and frequency conditions, and the 869 can control the transition of a reduced voltage starter on current only, current and time, or current or timer.

Engineering Design of the GE Multilin 869

The relay shares the 8 Series hardware: an extruded aluminium chassis with a draw-out case, harsh-environment conformal coating on every board, no electrolytic capacitors and a field swappable power supply. Rear slots accept three-phase CT banks (a second bank is needed for percent differential), ground or core balance CT input, VT inputs, high voltage I/O cards with two voltage-monitored Form A outputs, three Form C outputs and seven digital inputs, and low voltage cards carrying six RTDs each. A full colour graphic display on the front panel shows motor status, learned data and alarms.

For VFD-fed machines the GE Multilin 869 tracks frequency over 3 to 72 Hz and adjusts its sampling to measure phasors accurately, with switchable current and voltage tracking when the drive is bypassed and an optional ripple filter for harmonics. Communications include front USB, rear RS485 and copper or fibre Ethernet with IEC 61850 Ed2, PRP, Modbus RTU and TCP/IP, DNP3.0 and IEC 60870-5-104, plus optional Wi-Fi for configuration without standing in front of the switchgear. Cyber security tools include AAA, RADIUS, role-based access control and Syslog.

Industrial Applications

GE lists oil and gas, mining and metals, cement and wastewater as key markets for the GE Multilin 869. In Oman these correspond to gas compressor and crude oil pump motors in the interior oil fields, large seawater intake and high pressure pumps at desalination plants, cement mill and kiln drives, mining conveyors and the motor-driven compressors used in LNG and petrochemical complexes. Plants standardising on one motor relay family often compare the SEL-710-5 motor protection relay and the ABB REM615 motor protection and control relay with the GE Multilin 869 before deciding.

Seven Star LLC supports these customers with model selection and sourcing support from Muscat. Many large motors also carry mechanical condition monitoring, and we supply complementary equipment such as the Bently Nevada 3500 machinery protection system so that electrical and vibration protection for critical drives can be sourced through one supplier in Oman and the GCC.

About brand

Printed circuit boards from GE turbine and excitation control systems are among the hardest spares to identify correctly, because one changed letter in the part number can mean a different board. General Electric dates back to 1892. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, lists GE control boards with DS200 and IS200 part numbers for power plants and oil and gas operators in Oman and the GCC.

GE control boards listed on our site

Two boards are listed now. The IS200EPSMG1A is an exciter power supply module from the EX2100 excitation control, where it converts the 125 V DC supply into the voltages the control needs. The DS200LDCCH1AHA is a drive control and LAN communications board from the DS200 family of the Mark V generation, used in the drives and exciters of that period.

Ordering GE control boards: what we need

Send the complete part number including every suffix letter, the serial number or barcode label if present, and photos of both sides of the board. Tell us the control system and the cabinet or core the board comes from. Please state the suffix you can accept if it differs from the one fitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which motors can the GE Multilin 869 protect?
GE designed the GE Multilin 869 for medium and large induction and synchronous motors. The brochure lists two-speed motors, VFD-driven motors, motors with cyclic loading, high inertia loads and reduced voltage starting arrangements, as well as stator protection of synchronous motors whose field functions are handled by a separate excitation panel.
How does the GE Multilin 869 thermal model work?
The thermal model combines motor thermal limit curves (NEMA standard, voltage dependent or custom), IEC 60255-8 overload curves, a smoothing filter for cyclic loads, current unbalance biasing, separate running and stopped cooling curves, optional RTD biasing and hot or cold motor compensation, so thermal capacity used reflects the real heating of the machine.
Does the relay detect broken rotor bars?
Yes. In the standard monitoring option the relay applies motor current signature analysis to the running current and raises a programmable alarm when its algorithms identify a broken rotor bar, giving maintenance teams an early warning before reduced starting torque, overloads or bearing damage develop.
How many RTD inputs are available?
The GE Multilin 869 supports up to 12 programmable RTD inputs, ordered as cards of six RTDs in the low voltage I/O slots. RTDs can be grouped as stator, bearing or ambient sensors, configured for alarm or trip, and used with RTD voting so that a single failed sensor does not cause a spurious trip.
Does Seven Star LLC supply the GE Multilin 869 in Oman?
Yes. Seven Star LLC supplies the GE Multilin 869 to oil and gas, utility, water and industrial customers in Oman and the GCC. Our Muscat engineers help translate the motor data and switchgear requirements into the correct GE order code before the RFQ is processed.
