GE Multilin 889 Generator Protection Relay
Description
Overview
The GE Multilin 889 is a generator protection system from the Multilin 8 Series, offered by GE Vernova for the protection, control and management of generators and their associated unit transformers in critical utility and industrial applications. Beyond tripping for faults, it gives power system engineers the measurement accuracy, recording and diagnostic data needed to manage a generator over its whole life, supporting planned maintenance rather than reaction to failures. The relay supports IEC 61850 Edition 2, OPC-UA and IEC 62439 PRP, and includes cyber security tools that simplify secure integration with SCADA and DCS systems.
Seven Star LLC supplies the GE Multilin 889 to power stations, oil and gas production facilities and co-generation plants across Oman and the GCC. Our engineering team in Muscat works through the generator single line diagram with customers, confirming CT banks, VT connections, grounding method and RTD requirements so that each GE Multilin 889 is ordered with the right options.
Generator Protection Principle
Stator phase faults are cleared by a high-speed dual-slope differential element that GE Vernova states can operate at sub-cycle speed. CT saturation detection keeps the element stable during external disturbances, and a directional check confirms the fault is inside the generator before tripping. Faster clearing means less burning of the winding and insulation, and it also preserves evidence that helps root cause analysis during repair. With three sets of phase CTs, an overall differential element (87O) extends coverage from the generator neutral to the HV winding of the step-up transformer, adding redundancy for both machine and transformer.
Ground faults are handled according to the grounding method. On high resistance grounded machines the GE Multilin 889 combines auxiliary overvoltage with third harmonic neutral undervoltage to protect 100 percent of the stator winding. On low resistance grounded systems with parallel machines it coordinates ground fault tripping so only the faulted unit is islanded, and on hybrid grounded systems it switches quickly from low-impedance to high-impedance grounding when an internal fault is detected. Further elements cover loss of excitation (impedance or reactive power based), out-of-step with a single blinder and offset mho supervision, reverse and low forward power, inadvertent energisation, volts per hertz and stator thermal overload to IEC 60255-8.
Engineering Design of the GE Multilin 889
The GE Multilin 889 accepts up to 12 CT and 8 VT signals, with both 1 A and 5 A CTs supported, allowing generator terminal, neutral and transformer HV currents to be measured in one device. It is built on the 8 Series platform with a low insertion force draw-out case, field swappable power supply, harsh-environment conformal coating, no electrolytic capacitors and an IP54 front rating. RTD and dc mA inputs support bearing temperature and bearing vibration supervision, and FlexElements allow eight user-defined protection functions based on any measured or calculated quantity.
Frequency protection includes two underfrequency and four rate-of-change elements for load shedding, with an overfrequency element that can initiate generator rampdown. Synchrocheck monitors voltage difference, phase angle difference and slip frequency for safe paralleling. For connectivity the relay offers front USB, optional Wi-Fi, serial and Ethernet ports with Modbus RTU and TCP/IP, DNP3.0, IEC 60870-5-104, IEC 61850 Ed2, OPC-UA and PRP, plus AAA, RADIUS, role-based access control and Syslog security.
Key Features
The GE Multilin 889 combines the following protection and monitoring capabilities in one relay.
- Sub-cycle dual-slope stator differential with CT saturation detection and directional supervision.
- Overall generator and step-up transformer differential (87O) using a third set of phase CTs.
- 100 percent stator ground fault protection for high resistance, low resistance and hybrid grounded systems.
- Loss of excitation by impedance or reactive power method, and out-of-step protection to IEEE C37.102 guidance.
- Sensitive reverse power and low forward power elements to prevent motoring of the prime mover.
- Voltage restrained overcurrent, negative sequence protection, volts per hertz, inadvertent energisation and breaker failure.
- Up to 12 CT and 8 VT inputs, RTD bearing temperature and dc mA bearing vibration supervision.
- IEC 61850 Ed2, OPC-UA, PRP, DNP3.0 and Modbus communications with advanced cyber security tools.
Industrial Applications
The GE Multilin 889 fits gas turbine and steam turbine generators in combined-cycle and open-cycle power plants, emergency and essential power generators at oil and gas facilities, co-generation units in refineries and petrochemical plants, and renewable generation such as hydro or biomass units. In Oman this includes independent power and water plants, gas-fired stations supplying the main interconnected system, captive generation at remote oil fields and industrial plants in Sohar, Sur and Salalah that run their own turbines. Sites that operate GE turbine control systems can also source spare boards such as the GE DS200LDCCH1AHA drive control and LAN board and the GE IS200EPSMG1A exciter power supply module through the same supplier.
Seven Star LLC supports generator protection projects with model selection and sourcing support from Muscat. Where the step-up or unit auxiliary transformer has its own relay, engineers may pair the GE Multilin 889 with a dedicated transformer relay such as the SEL-787 transformer protection relay, and we help customers across Oman and the GCC compare options for their protection philosophy.

About brand
Printed circuit boards from GE turbine and excitation control systems are among the hardest spares to identify correctly, because one changed letter in the part number can mean a different board. General Electric dates back to 1892. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, lists GE control boards with DS200 and IS200 part numbers for power plants and oil and gas operators in Oman and the GCC.
GE control boards listed on our site
Two boards are listed now. The IS200EPSMG1A is an exciter power supply module from the EX2100 excitation control, where it converts the 125 V DC supply into the voltages the control needs. The DS200LDCCH1AHA is a drive control and LAN communications board from the DS200 family of the Mark V generation, used in the drives and exciters of that period.
Ordering GE control boards: what we need
Send the complete part number including every suffix letter, the serial number or barcode label if present, and photos of both sides of the board. Tell us the control system and the cabinet or core the board comes from. Please state the suffix you can accept if it differs from the one fitted.

Frequently Asked Questions
GE Vernova positions the GE Multilin 889 for comprehensive protection of small to large generators in utility and industrial power generation, including co-generation and renewable plants, and for protection of the associated unit or generator step-up transformer.
Yes. With support for three sets of phase CT inputs the relay provides an overall differential element (87O) covering the zone from the generator neutral to the HV winding of the step-up transformer, which can replace a separate single-function differential relay where there is no tapping between generator and transformer.
For high resistance grounded machines the GE Multilin 889 combines auxiliary overvoltage with third harmonic neutral undervoltage, so the whole winding is covered without having to study third harmonic variations. It also supports low resistance and hybrid grounded systems, including fast switching from low-impedance to high-impedance grounding on an internal fault.
Two methods are offered: an impedance-based characteristic and a reactive power method. The reactive power function does not need machine parameters for its settings, which helps on older generators where full machine data is not available.
Yes. Seven Star LLC supplies the GE Multilin 889 to power plants, oil and gas facilities and industrial co-generation sites in Oman and the GCC, with engineering support from Muscat to confirm the CT, VT, RTD and communications configuration.
