Brand: Bettis
Bettis RPX-Series Rack and Pinion Pneumatic Actuator
Description
Overview
The Bettis RPX series is a rack and pinion pneumatic actuator from Emerson for automating quarter-turn ball and butterfly valves in the low to medium torque range. Its extruded aluminium body, double rack design and direct ISO 5211 mounting make it a practical choice wherever many small and mid-size valves need reliable on-off or fail-safe operation, from utility headers and water treatment lines to chemical dosing skids and process isolation duties. Double-acting and spring-return versions share the same body, and a unit can be converted between the two in the field.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Bettis RPX to plants, OEM skid builders and contractors in Oman and across the GCC. As a trusted supplier with engineering support in Muscat, we match the actuator size and spring set to the valve torque and available air pressure, and supply the mounting kit, solenoid valve and limit switch box needed for a complete automated valve.
Operating Principle
In the Bettis RPX, two opposed pistons carry gear racks that engage a central pinion. In a double-acting actuator, air admitted to port 2 (A) pressurises the space between the pistons and drives them outward, turning the pinion counterclockwise to open the valve while the air behind the piston heads exhausts. Air admitted to port 4 (B) drives the pistons inward and rotates the pinion clockwise to close the valve. Because the two racks act on opposite sides of the pinion, side loads on the pinion shaft are cancelled, which minimises bearing wear and extends service life.
In a spring-return Bettis RPX, air at port 2 (A) drives the pistons outward and compresses the springs. When the air is released, the springs push the pistons back and rotate the valve to its fail position, with the air exhausting through the same port. Spring sets are available from 2.8 bar to 8.3 bar (40 to 120 psi) in 0.7 bar steps, and up to 12 individual springs can be fitted to tailor the torque. The standard fail direction is clockwise; it can be reversed by rotating the pistons 180 degrees in the body, which keeps parallel mounting and the correct operating quadrant.
Engineering Design of the Bettis RPX
The Bettis RPX body is extruded aluminium and the end caps are cast aluminium, both finished with an anodised layer plus electrostatic powder coating for protection in corrosive environments. The pinion is carbon steel with zinc-nickel plating, pistons are die-cast aluminium and the springs are spring steel with an epoxy coating. Springs are pre-compressed in a special container and the drive pinion is anti-blowout, so the actuator can be maintained safely. Glass-filled acetal top and bottom bearings and backing pads support the pinion and pistons.
The output drive mounts directly to ISO 5211 valve flanges, and a dual-keyed output shaft allows parallel or perpendicular mounting relative to the flow direction. Accessories such as solenoid valves and limit switch boxes mount through the NAMUR VDI/VDE 3845 interface. Standard travel stops give plus or minus 5 degrees of adjustment at each end of travel, and an optional end cap stroke limiter allows adjustment between full open and 30 degrees before closed, which helps protect the seat life of resilient seated butterfly valves.
Key Features
The Bettis RPX offers a set of practical advantages for general valve automation.
- Double-acting torque output from 17 to 4,173 Nm and spring-return output from 6 to 1,663 Nm.
- Eleven body sizes from RPX-003 to RPX-240 cover small instrument valves up to large butterfly valves.
- The double rack and pinion design cancels side loads on the pinion, reducing bearing wear.
- Anodised aluminium body with electrostatic powder coating resists corrosive atmospheres.
- Up to 12 pre-compressed springs per actuator allow fine matching of fail-safe torque.
- Direct ISO 5211 valve mounting and NAMUR VDI/VDE 3845 accessory interface simplify assembly.
- Low, extreme low and high temperature versions extend the range from -52 to +150 °C.
- ATEX marking II 2G Ex h IIC T80°C Gb and II 2D Ex h IIIC T80°C Db for hazardous areas.
Industrial Applications
The Bettis RPX is well suited to the large number of small and medium quarter-turn valves found on every process site: ball valves on utility air, nitrogen and water lines, butterfly valves on cooling water and filtration systems, and on-off valves on chemical injection and dosing packages. In water and wastewater plants and desalination facilities it automates resilient seated butterfly valves on filters, pumps and distribution headers, where the optional stroke limiter helps protect the seat. Its ATEX marking allows use in classified areas of oil and gas and petrochemical plants when paired with suitably certified accessories.
OEM skid builders value the Bettis RPX for its compact envelope and ISO mounting, because one actuator family can cover many valve sizes with a consistent accessory set. Seven Star LLC supports projects in Muscat, Sohar, Salalah and across the GCC as a trusted supplier of the Bettis RPX, with engineering help on torque sizing and spring selection.

About brand
On pipeline and wellhead valves across the oil and gas industry, the scotch yoke actuator bolted on top is very often a Bettis. The brand dates from 1929 and today covers pneumatic, hydraulic and electric valve actuators. Seven Star LLC lists the Bettis G-Series, CBA300 and CBB-Series pneumatic scotch yoke actuators and supplies Bettis actuators and spare parts to operators in Oman and the GCC.
Bettis scotch yoke actuator series
The G-Series is the modular pneumatic scotch yoke actuator for quarter-turn valves, built up from a drive module, pressure modules and, for fail-safe duty, a spring module. The CBB-Series is the compact, lightweight scotch yoke design for smaller valves, and the CBA300 Series is a compact pneumatic actuator in the same class. Each comes as double-acting or spring-return. Several Bettis actuators are offered in configurations that comply with API 6DX.
Ordering Bettis actuators: what we need
