Biffi EFS 3000 Fail-Safe Electric Quarter-Turn Actuator

Description

Overview

The Biffi EFS 3000 is an electric quarter-turn actuator with a built-in spring return, designed to close or open a valve in emergency conditions without compressed air or hydraulic supply. Biffi positions it for safety-critical applications in oil and gas, process and general industry, where a conventional fail-safe pneumatic or hydraulic actuator is impractical because the plant has no instrument air or hydraulic power unit near the valve.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Biffi EFS 3000 to customers across Oman and the GCC, with availability enquiries and engineering support in Muscat. Remote wellhead sites, solar-powered pipeline stations and unmanned platforms are common cases where a fail-safe electric actuator replaces a gas-powered or air-powered unit. If your valve needs a non-fail-safe quarter-turn electric actuator instead, see the Biffi F02 electric quarter-turn actuator.

Spring-Return Operating Principle

In normal operation the EFS 3000 behaves as an electric actuator, and its electric motor drives the valve while it charges a spring cartridge. An epicyclic gear reduction increases the output torque, and an electromagnetic clutch holds the spring energy in reserve. When an emergency command or loss of power occurs, the clutch releases and the stored spring energy drives the valve to its fail-safe position, either closed or open depending on the configuration.

A low-pressure hydraulic control group regulates the speed of the spring stroke and provides manual operation. Because the spring does the emergency work, the action does not depend on batteries, air or a hydraulic accumulator being healthy at that moment. Biffi lists both a spring-to-close and a spring-to-open version in the datasheet performance tables.

Engineering Design of the Biffi EFS 3000

The Biffi EFS 3000 is assembled from five main parts: an ICON3000 electric actuator, a spring cartridge, the fail-safe electric actuator body, a spring-to-close hydraulic actuator and the hydraulic control group. Using the ICON3000 as the control head means the same non-intrusive set-up, display and diagnostics as on a standard ICON3000, with Bluetooth configuration and a configurable data logger.

The datasheet quotes eight sizes. Spring starting torque reaches 18,000 Nm and spring ending torque reaches 9,000 Nm, while electric-mode starting and ending torque reach 25,500 Nm and 12,500 Nm. The terminal block is double-sealed, sensing is digital and contactless, and the display offers eight languages. Performance tables cover single-phase 115, 120, 220, 230 and 240 V, three-phase 400 V and 24 V DC supplies.

Industrial Applications

Typical Biffi EFS 3000 duties are emergency shutdown valves on gas pipelines, wellhead and flowline valves, compressor station isolation and fire-safe tank isolation. In Oman these are found at remote desert gas fields where instrument air is expensive to supply, at pipeline pigging stations and at coastal terminals around Sohar and Duqm that need a defined valve position on loss of power.

The ratings matter for permits as well as for safety. SIL 3 capability, an Ex-d enclosure and the IP66 rating let the actuator be listed in safety instrumented function documents for ESD valves. Seven Star LLC can review the valve torque at breakaway, the required fail-safe direction and the stroke time with you, and quote matching limit switches and accessories alongside valves such as the Argus FK76M trunnion mounted ball valve.

Why Choose Seven Star LLC for Biffi EFS 3000 Supply

A fail-safe actuator must be sized for the worst case, which is breakaway torque at the moment of emergency. When a Biffi EFS 3000 request arrives, Seven Star LLC works through valve torque at both ends of the stroke, the spring direction, the stroke time and the supply voltage against the Biffi performance tables, and reports the margin clearly. We can also provide the documentation that safety teams ask for when the Biffi EFS 3000 is included in a safety instrumented function.

About brand
Pipeline and wellhead valves in the oil and gas industry are often moved by a Biffi actuator. The company was founded in 1955 at Fiorenzuola d'Arda, Italy, and builds pneumatic, hydraulic, electro-hydraulic and electric actuators for on-off and shutdown valves. Seven Star LLC lists Biffi quarter-turn actuators across these operating media and supplies them to valve automation shops and operators in Oman, sized from the valve torque data.

Biffi actuator series on this page

The series names follow a logic that helps when reading a tag. ALGA is the pneumatic quarter-turn actuator and ALGAS its spring-return version. OLGA-H is the hydraulic quarter-turn actuator and OLGAS-H the fail-safe hydraulic version with spring. In the compact rack-and-pinion group, RPD and RPS are the double-acting and spring-return pneumatic pair, and RPHD and RPHS are their hydraulic counterparts. The F01 and F02 are electric quarter-turn actuators; the manufacturer now names the Bettis SCE300 as the replacement for the F02. In each pair the S marks the model that returns to a safe position by spring.

Where Biffi actuators are used

Typical duties are emergency shutdown and blowdown valves, pipeline block valves, wellhead and manifold valves, tank farm isolation and large ball valves at compressor and metering stations. Spring-return models are chosen for fail-safe service. Hydraulic and electro-hydraulic units appear where instrument air is not on hand, as on remote GCC pipeline stations.

Ordering Biffi actuators: what we need

Actuators are sized, so the valve data comes first: valve type and size, the torque curve or at least break, run and end torques, the safety factor in your specification and the stem and mounting flange dimensions. Then the supply: minimum and maximum air or oil pressure, or voltage for electric units. State the fail action, stroking time, ambient temperature and the control accessories required. For an existing actuator send the model and serial number from the nameplate.
