Rotork IQT3 Part-Turn Electric Valve Actuator
Overview
The Rotork IQT3 is the part-turn member of Rotork’s third-generation intelligent actuator family. It is built to open and close quarter-turn valves in refineries, gas plants, power stations and water works, where a plant engineer needs a sealed, maintenance-light drive that reports its own condition. Compared with a pneumatic actuator on a ball or butterfly valve, the Rotork IQT3 needs no compressed air header, no tubing and no filter regulator, which simplifies projects at remote sites.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Rotork IQT3 to engineering contractors, EPC teams and plant operators across the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. Our Muscat team can confirm the actuator size against valve torque, review the enclosure and hazardous-area classification, and supply the manufacturer’s documentation so that the purchase can move through technical clarification quickly.
Operating Principle
The Rotork IQT3 is driven by a low-inertia, high-torque permanent-magnet motor that runs from an internally derived 24 VDC supply, fed in turn from a three-phase, single-phase or DC mains input. The motor drives a self-locking, oil-filled gear train and a final quadrant that converts rotation into the 90 degree output stroke. Because the gearing is self-locking, the valve cannot back-drive the actuator, and the position holds without a brake or holding current.
Position is measured by an absolute sensor with very few moving parts, while torque is derived directly from motor current rather than a mechanical torque switch. According to Rotork’s published IQT specification, the output speed can be adjusted between 50 and 100 percent in one percent steps, torque trip can be set between 40 and 100 percent of rated torque, and a motor stalled while trying to unseat a jammed valve is de-energised within eight seconds. These controls let the Rotork IQT3 protect both the valve and its own motor without external relays.
Engineering Design of the Rotork IQT3
The Rotork IQT3 keeps its starter, control transformer and local controls inside one sealed enclosure, so the installer only has to land power, control and indication cables. Rotork specifies watertight sealing to IP66/IP68, an ambient range of -30 to +70 °C and a double-sealed terminal compartment, which means the internal electronics stay protected even while the terminal cover is off during cabling. The drive coupling sits in the base of the actuator and is machined to suit the valve shaft, and stop bolts provide about plus or minus five degrees of adjustment at each end of travel.
The user interface is a backlit dot-matrix display with open, closed and intermediate LEDs, readable from five metres, and the local controls can be rotated in 90 degree steps to suit the installation. For emergency operation a handwheel engages when the motor is declutched, and the specification limits the rim force to 350 N. A remote hand station can be added to control the actuator from up to 100 metres away, with an operating range down to -50 °C.
Key Features
The Rotork IQT3 combines valve protection, diagnostics and wiring convenience in a single part-turn drive. Main features of the Rotork IQT3 include:
- Non-intrusive setting of torque, limits and contacts over Bluetooth or infra-red, so no cover is ever removed on site.
- Speed adjustment from 50 to 100 percent, which allows slow closing to limit pressure surge on pipelines.
- Absolute position sensing with 0.1 degree resolution across an adjustable 90 degree stroke.
- Four configurable indication contacts rated 5 mA to 5 A, with provision for eight more, plus a monitor relay for availability or fault.
- An integral datalogger covering torque versus position, starts per hour, dwell time and an event log with date and time.
- Remote control by open, close, stop, maintained, two-wire or emergency shut-down inputs, with circuits protected against 2 kV lightning impulses.
- Network options including Profibus, Modbus, Foundation Fieldbus, DeviceNet, Pakscan and HART, and an Ethernet route through Modbus TCP or Profinet.
- Certificates published by Rotork for ATEX, IECEx, UKEx, FM and cCSAus, Lloyd’s Register approval and a fire endurance test, plus a SIL Stayput certificate for the IQT3 Pro variant.
Industrial Applications
The Rotork IQT3 is used wherever quarter-turn valves must be operated remotely and reliably: pipeline block valves, tank farm isolation, cooling-water butterfly valves and flue-gas or process dampers. In Oman, operators of refineries, LNG and gas processing plants, and power and desalination stations value a sealed electric actuator that can be commissioned in a hazardous area without opening covers. Multi-turn gate and globe valves in the same plants are normally served by the Rotork IQ3, so one commissioning tool and one data format cover both valve types.
Seven Star LLC supports contractors in the Sohar and Salalah economic zones, water transmission projects and industrial parks with engineering support in Muscat. Where a project compares electric drives, we can also quote the AUMA SQ part-turn actuator or the Limitorque MX so that buyers see alternatives side by side. The Rotork IQT3 is a strong fit where Bluetooth data extraction and the integral datalogger will support a preventive maintenance programme.

Rotork product families on this page
The IQ3 is the intelligent multi-turn electric actuator for gate, globe and sluice valves, and the IQT3 is its part-turn counterpart for ball, butterfly and plug valves. For control valves there are the CVA and CMA electric actuators, built for continuous modulating duty. The Skilmatic SI3 is a self-contained electro-hydraulic actuator used where a fail-safe stroke is required. On the fluid power side the page lists GP/GH scotch yoke pneumatic and hydraulic actuators and the CP compact pneumatic quarter-turn unit. Two instrument brands sold under the Rotork name complete the list: Fairchild, with the Model 1000 no-bleed precision regulator, and YTC, with the YT-1000 electro-pneumatic and YT-3300 smart positioners.Where Rotork actuators are used
Typical duties are isolation and block valves on pipelines and tank farms, motor-operated valves in refineries and power plants, sluice gates and large butterfly valves in water and wastewater works, and emergency shutdown valves on oil and gas facilities across the GCC.Ordering Rotork actuators and parts: what we need
For an existing unit, send the serial number and the wiring diagram number from the nameplate; these two identify the exact build. For a new selection we need the valve type and size, torque or thrust, stem or shaft details, operating time, supply voltage, phase and frequency, the hazardous area certification, and any bus or remote control option. For pneumatic units add the air supply pressure and the fail position.Browse Rotork products by category: Valve Positioner, Valve Actuator.
