Petzl ASAP LOCK Mobile Fall Arrester for Rope

Description

A drop-resistant mobile fall arrester for working on rope

The Petzl ASAP LOCK (reference B071BB00) is a mobile fall arrester for rope with an integrated LOCK function. During normal use it trails freely along the rope without manual operation. In a fall or an uncontrolled descent exceeding two metres per second the device blocks the rope and stops the user, even if the device is grabbed during the fall. It works on vertical, horizontal or angled rope.

A connection arm makes the system drop resistant, which simplifies passing intermediate anchors, and safety catches make installation on and removal from the rope easier. The LOCK function lets the user immobilise the device on the rope to reduce the potential fall distance and to stop the device being blown upwards in very windy conditions.

Matching components

The ASAP LOCK is one part of a system. Petzl states it must be combined with an energy absorber: the ASAP’SORBER 20 or 40 for a person weighing up to 140 kg, or the ASAP’SORBER AXESS (40 cm, reference L071CC00, 140 g) for two-person rescue scenarios up to 250 kg. Petzl also supplies ready-assembled kits with OK TRIACT-LOCK or Bm’D TRIACT-LOCK connectors. For comparison, the ASAP without the LOCK function is reference B070AB00, 190 g, with the same 10 to 13 mm rope range and certifications.

Selection and use notes

The device is intended as a back-up device on a rope access system or as the primary device in a fall-arrest system, depending on how the system is assembled. The instructions for use stress checking the blocking wheel for foreign objects, keeping the wheel engaged on the rope, and verifying clearance below the user, including rope elasticity. A detailed inspection by a competent person is recommended at least once every 12 months. Confirm the rope, absorber, connector and anchor before ordering.

Fitting the ASAP LOCK to the rope

Only a trained and competent person should install and use the device, following the Petzl instructions for use and the rescue plan for the job. Before each use, check the device body, the blocking wheel, the connection arm, the safety catches and the LOCK function for wear, cracks, deformation, corrosion or dirt, and make sure the wheel turns freely and blocks correctly when tested by hand. Inspect the rope, absorber and connectors at the same time, because the system is only as good as its weakest component.

Install the device on the rope in the correct orientation, as marked on the device, so that it blocks in the direction of a fall. After installation, perform a function test by pulling the device sharply downwards on the rope to confirm that it locks. Connect it to the sternal or dorsal attachment point specified in the instructions, through the energy absorber and connector chosen for the system, and check that every gate is closed and locked before leaving the ground.

Planning the work and the rescue

Fall-arrest and rope-access work demands a written plan covering anchor selection, rope routing, edge protection and clearance below the user. Keep the device above the user whenever possible to limit fall distance, and use the LOCK function at work positions where a shorter potential fall or wind exposure makes it useful. A rescue plan with equipment and trained people on site is essential, since a suspended worker must be reached quickly.

Using the device in Oman and GCC conditions

Work at height in Oman often takes place on tanks, towers, stacks, telecom masts and building facades exposed to strong sun, wind and blowing sand. Sand and grit can enter the blocking mechanism and abrade the rope, so keep the device and ropes in a bag when they are not in use, avoid laying ropes on sandy ground, and inspect the wheel area for trapped particles before each climb. High heat and direct sunlight degrade textile components over time; store ropes, absorbers and harnesses in a cool, shaded, dry place away from chemicals and fuels. On coastal and offshore jobs, rinse the metal parts with fresh water after exposure to salt spray, dry them naturally away from direct heat, and check the moving parts for corrosion.

Inspection records and retirement

Keep an individual record for each device, noting its reference, serial number, date of first use and the results of every periodic inspection. Withdraw the device from service immediately after it has arrested a serious fall, if it fails any check, or if there is any doubt about its condition, and do not return it to use until a competent person has confirmed that it is fit.

Selection checks before purchase

Confirm the diameter and type of rope already used on site, the weight of each user including tools and equipment, the standard that the client or project specifies, and whether the device will serve as a back-up on a rope access system or as the primary fall arrester. These answers decide which absorber and connector must be paired with it.

Documents and quotation

The attached Petzl instructions for use cover the ASAP LOCK. Confirm the exact reference, size or length, the standard required on site (CE, ANSI or CSA) and the compatibility of every component before ordering.
