Petzl I’D EVAC Self-Braking Descender for Rescue Lowering

Description

A descender made for lowering a person or load from an anchor

The Petzl I’D EVAC (reference D020CA00, yellow, and D020CA01, black) is a self-braking descender with an anti-panic function whose handle is oriented for managing a load from an anchor. Petzl designed it primarily for lowering from an anchor, which makes it the descender used in rescue and evacuation kits. The safety gate on the moving side plate lets the rope be installed while the device remains connected to the anchor.

The AUTO-LOCK system locks the rope automatically without handling the lever or tying off, and once locked the rope can be taken up for a reversible haul system. The anti-error catch reduces the risk of incorrect installation, and the open auxiliary brake lets the user add friction according to the weight of the load and the rope diameter. The moving side plate can be locked shut with a screw so the I’D EVAC can be integrated into evacuation kits.

Choosing between the Petzl descenders

The I’D EVAC and the I’D S (D020AA) share the same 10 to 11.5 mm rope range and the 140 kg working load, but the EVAC handle is arranged for control from the anchor, whereas the I’D S is arranged for a technician descending the rope. The I’D L (D020BA) is for 12.5 to 13 mm rope with a 150 kg limit. Petzl’s RIG (D021AB00) is a lighter 406 g descender for 9.5 to 11.5 mm rope.

Installation and inspection

Braking depends on the rope and on conditions such as diameter, wear, dirt, moisture and ice, so the instructions for use direct the user to check the behaviour of each rope before use. The anchor must meet EN 795 (12 kN minimum strength). Petzl recommends a detailed inspection by a competent person at least once every 12 months, covering the handle return spring, the safety gate and the cam. Because the working load limits depend on the rope and on the use case, confirm the rope make, the number of people being lowered and the anchor strength before ordering, and keep the descender in an evacuation kit only if the kit design allows it to be inspected regularly.
