FIAMM SGL 15 2 V 183 Ah Planté GroE Flooded Cell
Description
SGL 15, referenced in the folder as 7 GroE 175, is a 2 V vented Planté cell from the FIAMM SGL-SGH series built to the German DIN 40738 GroE standard. It is rated 183 Ah at the 10-hour rate to 1.80 volts per cell at 20 °C, in a 182 x 153 x 415 mm case with 4.8 litres of electrolyte and a typical weight of 26.3 kg.
A pure lead Planté cell with a stated 25-year design life
FIAMM positions SGL-SGH as the longest-life lead-acid battery in its flooded portfolio, designed to operate 25 years without loss of performance. The positive plate is Planté pure lead with a laminate design, which also gives very low water consumption: a single topping-up in three years under float conditions.
The SGL branch starts at SGL 7 (3 GroE 75, 79 Ah) and reaches 314 Ah at SGL 25 (12 GroE 300), continuing up to SGL 37. SGL 15 is the largest of the five narrow 153 mm wide cells before the case grows to 228 mm wide from SGL 17.
Features listed in the folder and manual
- Planté pure-lead positive plate with narrow plate distance, built to DIN 40738 (GroE).
- Design life 25 years; deep-discharge and high-rate performance.
- Special inspection hole in SGL-SGH cells to check electrolyte density and temperature without removing the recombination plugs.
- Electrolyte specific gravity 1.22 kg per litre at 20 °C; transparent SAN container.
- Optional nut and bolt terminals to UK National Grid; the manual also lists BS 6290 part 2 for the Planté range.

Derived values (calculated here, not printed)
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Energy at the C10 rating | about 0.37 kWh per cell (2 V x 183 Ah) |
| 60-cell string float voltage | 60 x 2.23 = 133.8 V at 20 °C |
Reading the GroE name and the SGL step sizes
In the DIN naming convention (general knowledge, not a FIAMM statement) the number after GroE is the nominal capacity and the first number the plate count: 7 GroE 175 means seven plates and 175 Ah, and the folder shows FIAMM delivering 183 Ah. That margin is typical of the range, where actual capacity exceeds the DIN nominal value.
Adjacent types change capacity in steps of about 25 Ah: SGL 13 gives 155 Ah and SGL 17 gives 209 Ah in the wider 228 mm case. For larger plants the SGH branch extends to 2860 Ah according to the manual.
Commissioning and maintenance notes from the manual
Use straps or mechanical lifting, never the terminals. Fit connectors with insulated wrenches at 20 to 25 Nm, apply No-Oxide grease, and label cells from number 1 at the positive end. Dry-charged cells are filled to the MAX line and charged at 0.10 C10 for 16 to 17 hours.
Boost charge after a discharge at 2.40 V per cell, limited to 0.15 C10, ending at 0.001 C10 or after 24 hours. Equalizing is not a routine method and should be supervised by a FIAMM technician.
Long-life DC supplies for utilities and process plants
SGL-SGH is aimed at industry and utility installations, including power stations and substations where replacement outages are costly. General engineering note: when a plant life of 20 years or more is planned, a Planté cell cuts the number of battery replacements, but it requires a ventilated room and periodic electrolyte checks.

Battery room and maintenance notes
Planté cells are chosen for long-life DC supplies in substations, power plants, desalination plants and process plants, where the battery must be reliable for many years. Flooded cells produce hydrogen during charging, so the battery room must be ventilated as required by the manual and the applicable standard, with no ignition sources near the cells. The room should be cooled in the region’s climate, because high temperatures shorten battery life, and the charger’s float voltage and temperature compensation should be set as given in the manual.
Check electrolyte levels, specific gravity and cell voltages at the intervals in the manual, top up only with the specified water, and keep the cell tops clean and dry. Recheck the connection torque during routine maintenance.
