Clean agent fire suppression components
FM-200 is the trade name of HFC-227ea, a gaseous extinguishing agent that leaves no residue and is used in control rooms, switchgear rooms and server rooms. A clean agent system is engineered as a whole. The agent quantity is calculated from the room volume and the design concentration under NFPA 2001 or ISO 14520, and the cylinders, valves, control heads and nozzles all belong to one approved system family. Spares are therefore ordered by exact part number, cylinder size and fill weight.
Landing valves for wet riser systems
A landing valve is the hose connection valve on each floor of a wet riser. Specify the inlet type and size, the outlet coupling, the body material and whether a pressure-reducing version is required.

Can a Kidde cylinder or control head be used in a system from another manufacturer?
No. Clean agent systems are approved as complete systems, and the cylinder valve, control heads, discharge hoses and nozzles are designed and tested together. Mixing components from different manufacturers invalidates the system approval and may simply not fit mechanically. Replacement parts should carry the same manufacturer's part number as the item being replaced, or the successor number named in the manufacturer documentation.
Which nameplate data is needed to order a replacement agent cylinder?
Copy the assembly part number, the cylinder size, the agent fill weight and the pressurization level from the cylinder nameplate. The fill weight is calculated for the protected room, so two cylinders of the same size can hold different agent quantities. Note the date of manufacture or last test as well, and the type of control head mounted on the valve.
What is the difference between an electric control head and a pilot cylinder?
An electric control head is mounted on a cylinder valve and opens it when the release panel sends a signal. A pilot cylinder holds pressurized gas that is released into an actuation line to open one or more agent cylinders pneumatically. Systems with several cylinders often use an electric head on the pilot or master cylinder and pneumatic actuation for the rest.
What should be specified when ordering a landing valve to BS 5041?
State the pattern, oblique or horizontal, the inlet connection, flanged with its drilling standard or threaded with its thread type, and the nominal size. The outlet is normally an instantaneous female coupling with a blank cap and chain. Add the body material and say whether the riser pressure calls for a pressure-reducing type. Mention any project approval requirement so the right model is offered.
Why must a room protected by a clean agent system be well sealed?
The agent extinguishes a fire only if its concentration stays at the design level for the specified hold time. Gaps around doors, cable penetrations and ceiling voids let the agent leak out and the concentration drops too early. This is why the design standards call for an enclosure integrity check, and why dampers and ventilation are closed or stopped before discharge.
