Engineered for accuracy, reliability, and longevity, this sensor is ideal for monitoring and measuring linear movement in high-performance machinery and equipment.
This model offers a travel range of 75 mm and utilizes advanced non-contact sensing technology to eliminate mechanical wear, ensuring a long operational life even in challenging environments. The Bruel-Kjaer DS-1051 Contactless Travel Sensor is built to withstand high vibration, extreme temperatures, and exposure to dust or moisture, making it suitable for heavy industries such as power generation, oil & gas, marine, and manufacturing.
With its rugged construction and precise signal output, this sensor is a trusted component for predictive maintenance and condition monitoring systems. The DS-1051 is compatible with Bruel-Kjaer’s vibration monitoring and analysis equipment, enabling seamless integration into existing setups. This compatibility ensures maintenance teams can easily collect, process, and analyze displacement data to detect potential faults before they escalate into costly failures.
The Bruel-Kjaer DS-1051 Contactless Travel Sensor is designed with easy installation in mind, featuring a threaded body for secure mounting and standardized electrical connectors for plug-and-play operation. Its robust sensing mechanism guarantees high-resolution displacement measurements without the friction or degradation associated with contact-based sensors.
Although this model reached its end-of-life (EOL) status on April 1st, 2017, it remains available as a spare part for facilities relying on existing installations. Many industrial plants continue to use this sensor due to its proven durability, precision, and low maintenance requirements.
By implementing the Bruel-Kjaer DS-1051 Contactless Travel Sensor into your system, you can enhance operational efficiency, increase equipment uptime, and reduce unplanned shutdowns. Whether used for shaft position monitoring, valve travel detection, or general displacement measurement, this sensor delivers consistent and trustworthy results in even the harshest industrial environments.
Technical Specifications
The Brüel & Kjær Vibro DS-1051 is a member of the DS-105x family of eddy-current (proximity) displacement sensors used for relative shaft vibration and shaft position measurement, built to API 670 and DIN 45670. It provides a linear measuring range of 2mm, with a nominal sensitivity of -8mV/µm (-200mV/mil) against standard target material (1.7225/42CrMo4 shaft steel), a frequency response of DC to 3200Hz (-3dB), and a slew rate of 0.05V/µs.
The sensor tip is rated for -30°C to +180°C operation (storage -20°C to +70°C), with a ceramic sensing element (requiring careful, shock-protected handling and storage) housed in a stainless-steel bushing (material 1.4301 per DIN 17200). The mating cable is a 75Ω triax design with a coaxial-socket connector and FEP outer sheath. The DS-1051 pairs with a matching extension cable and oscillator-demodulator unit to form a complete measuring chain, and carries ATEX certification (II 1/2G Ex ia IIC T6 Ga/Gb and II 2D Ex ia IIIC T190°C Db, certificate PTB 03 ATEX 2235) for Zone 0/1/21 installation when fitted with the specified steel protective conduit.
Applications
This sensor is used for continuous relative shaft-vibration and shaft-position (axial/radial displacement) monitoring on turbines, compressors, and other critical rotating machinery, typically feeding a VIBROCONTROL 6000-type protection system, and its ATEX certification makes it suitable for installation in hazardous-area classified zones common across GCC oil & gas and petrochemical facilities.
Why Seven Star LLC
Seven Star LLC supplies genuine Brüel & Kjær Vibro displacement sensors, including the DS-1051, to power generation, oil & gas, and petrochemical customers across Oman and the wider GCC, and confirms the exact cable chain length and hazardous-area certification requirement needed to match the customer’s existing measuring system before confirming an order.
Why Eddy-Current Displacement Measurement
Unlike a casing-mounted velocity or acceleration sensor, an eddy-current displacement sensor measures the actual gap between the sensor tip and the shaft surface directly, giving a true relative-vibration and shaft-position signal rather than an inferred one. This makes it the standard measurement technology on fluid-film bearing turbomachinery, where shaft position within the bearing clearance and relative vibration amplitude are the parameters that actually determine bearing health and rub risk, and where a casing-mounted sensor alone cannot see the shaft’s true motion relative to the bearing.
Handling and Installation Notes
Because the DS-1051’s ceramic sensing tip is shock-sensitive, careful handling during installation and storage is essential — dropping or impacting the probe tip can crack the ceramic element and render the sensor unreliable or completely non-functional without any obvious external sign of damage. Correct gap-setting during installation, following the manufacturer’s calibration curve for the specific target material, is equally important, since eddy-current sensors are calibrated against a defined material (in this case 1.7225/42CrMo4 shaft steel) and will read incorrectly if the actual shaft material differs significantly from that reference.
Hazardous-Area Deployment
The DS-1051’s ATEX certification for Zone 0/1/21 installation, when fitted with the specified steel protective conduit, makes it a suitable choice for turbomachinery located within classified hazardous areas across GCC oil & gas and petrochemical sites. As with any intrinsically safe measuring chain, the sensor, cable, and oscillator-demodulator must all be certified as a matched system, and Seven Star LLC confirms this complete chain compatibility rather than supplying the sensor as an isolated, unverified component.
