Samson Type 3259 High-Pressure Angle Control Valve PN 325

Description

Samson Type 3259 angle valve for high-pressure industrial plants

The Samson Type 3259 is a forged stainless steel angle control valve built for industrial high-pressure plants that follow the IG standard. It is offered in nominal sizes DN 10 to 90 with a pressure rating of PN 325 and a medium temperature window of –10 to +450 °C, depending on the packing or bellows version. Seven Star LLC supplies the Type 3259 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat, and this page explains how the type designation is built and what to check before you request a quotation.

The valve belongs to Samson Series 250. It is combined with a pneumatic actuator to form the complete control valve: the Type 3259-1 uses the Type 3271 diaphragm actuator, and the Type 3259-7 uses the Type 3277 actuator that accepts a positioner attached directly to the actuator yoke. Because the angle body turns the flow through 90 degrees and has a screwed-flange connection, it is typically found on high-pressure steam, gas and process lines where a compact, rigid body is preferred over a flanged cast design.

Decoding the Type 3259-1 and 3259-7 designation

Designation Meaning
Type 3259 Series 250 angle valve body, forged stainless steel, screwed flange connections with lens ring gaskets
Type 3259-1 Valve combined with the Type 3271 pneumatic actuator (350 to 2800 cm² actuator area)
Type 3259-7 Valve combined with the Type 3277 pneumatic actuator (350 to 750v2 cm²) for integral positioner attachment
DN Nominal size 10, 16, 24, 30, 45, 58, 70 or 90
KVS Flow coefficient from 0.1 to 100, linked to the seat diameter and rated travel

The datasheet also notes that the nominal sizes DN 6, DN 10 and DN 16 are available as the separate Type 3510 micro-flow valve, so for very small flows that type should be considered alongside the 3259.

Temperature versions of the Type 3259

The packing and bonnet design set the usable temperature range. Samson lists four arrangements, and the correct one has to be named in the enquiry because the actuator height changes with each.

Version Medium temperature
Standard with spring-loaded double PTFE packing –10 to +220 °C
Adjustable high-temperature packing –10 to +350 °C
Insulating section –10 to +450 °C
Bellows seal (metal bellows 2.4819 with back-up packing and test connection) –10 to +450 °C

A heating jacket is available on request. Permissible operating pressures follow the pressure-temperature diagram for material 1.4404, which shows the pressure falling from the PN 325 class as temperature rises, so the working point must always be checked against that diagram rather than the nominal rating alone.

How the Type 3259 control valve works

The medium normally flows through the valve in the flow-to-open direction. The plug position fixes the free area between plug and seat, and the pneumatic actuator moves the plug stem against its return springs. The stem is sealed by the spring-loaded double PTFE packing, or by a metal bellows where stricter emission limits apply. A test connection can be fitted on both the packed and the bellows version so that the seal can be monitored.

The actuator spring arrangement defines the fail-safe position. With the actuator stem extending, the valve closes when the supply air fails (fail-close); with the stem retracting, the valve opens (fail-open). The actuators can also be designed for pressure applied from either side on request, which is useful when the process side rather than the air side dictates the safe state.

Where the Type 3259 fits in a control loop

The modular design accepts positioners, limit switches, solenoid valves and other accessories mounted according to DIN EN 60534-6-1 and the NAMUR recommendation. The related Samson documents describe the Type 3271 and Type 3277 actuators and the accessory range; typical companions on this site include the Type 3730-series and TROVIS 3793 smart positioners and the Type 3963 solenoid valve. An optional RFID tag with unique identification according to DIN SPEC 91406 can be fitted, and a safety manual is available for safety-instrumented systems with SIL requirements.

Selection checklist before ordering a Type 3259

  • Line pressure and temperature at the valve, checked against the pressure-temperature diagram for 1.4404.
  • Required KVS at minimum, normal and maximum flow, then the matching DN and seat diameter.
  • Metal seal (class IV) or high-performance metal seal (class V) depending on shut-off needs.
  • Packing version: PTFE, high-temperature packing, insulating section or bellows seal.
  • Actuator choice: Type 3271 for standard mounting or Type 3277 for integral positioner attachment, with the spring range and fail-safe direction.
  • Characteristic: equal percentage or linear, and flow direction.
  • Accessories: positioner, limit switches, solenoid valve, RFID tag and the need for SIL documentation.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the 3259

Because the connection is a screwed flange with lens ring gaskets, the mating pipe ends must match the IG standard design; confirm this against the piping specification before the valve is released. The actuator height and the clearance needed to remove it depend on the actuator area, and the datasheet gives the heights H1 (standard bonnet) and H4 (insulating section or bellows seal) for each combination, for example 470 mm for a 350 cm² actuator on DN 10 to 30. Leave the stated minimum clearance above the actuator for removal.

During commissioning, stroke the valve over the full rated travel (15 or 30 mm), verify the fail-safe direction, and for bellows versions check the test connection. Maintenance centres on the V-ring packing, the guide bushing and the Stellite-faced seat and plug. Keeping a packing set and a seat-plug set for each installed size shortens outages.

Typical applications of the Type 3259 in Oman and the GCC

High-pressure angle valves of this kind are used wherever a small to medium flow must be throttled across a large pressure drop: high-pressure steam and condensate lines in power and desalination plants, gas let-down and injection lines in oil and gas facilities, and process lines in petrochemical units. The stainless steel body and Stellite trim suit hot, erosive or corrosive service, and the insulating-section and bellows versions allow operation up to +450 °C. Ambient heat, dust and humidity at coastal sites make the choice of packing version and accessory sealing worth discussing early.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types

Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.

Among the positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.

Where Samson valves are used

Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.
