Ridgegear RGA3/EDGE Edge Fall Arrest Block 15m Wire
Description
RGA3 (RGA3/EDGE) is a Ridgegear 15 m retractable type fall arrester with a 5 mm galvanised wire cable and a polyester shock pack, certified in the product details to EN 360:2002 and VG11.060. It is the long-working-length, heavier-construction member of the Edge range, designed for horizontal, overhead and leading-edge applications.
A long-reach fall arrest block with an edge-rated shock pack
The housing is cast alloy and its carrying handle is part of the casting, so the block can be hung from the anchorage using soft slings or a connector. Ridgegear recommends an extension strop (RGL4) to make self-connecting to the block easier. The cable is galvanised wire, and the lanyard end carries a double-action high-tensile steel swivel karabiner. The unit weighs 9.6 kg, which is a practical figure for a worker who has to carry and rig it.
The user instructions describe the VG11.060 edge tests as a series of dynamic drop tests using 140 kg over a sharp, smooth steel edge with a 0.5 mm radius, so the device may be used over similar edges with a radius of no less than 0.5 mm. The same document warns that horizontal use or foot-level attachment should still be discouraged because of the risk of striking objects.
Key features as printed in the datasheet

Selection and ordering guide
Choose the RGA3 when the working length, not the lightest weight, is the priority and the job involves a roof or structure edge. The shorter RGA2/EDGE (10 m) and RGA26 (6 m) share the same instruction leaflet. If a casualty may need to be winched up or down after a fall, step up to the RGA4/EDGE with recovery winch, which has its own page on this site.
Free space matters: the instructions call for at least 2.5 m below foot level, up to 3 m when used at a 30 degree angle, with a further 3 m added when used horizontally or attached at foot level.
Installation and operation notes
Pre-use checks in the leaflet: pull the cable out and look for damage; check that a red fall indicator is not showing; extend and retract it slowly; pull the cable sharply with a gloved hand to check it locks; and make sure the connector hooks open and close. Never allow the cable to retract at speed because that can dislodge the locking mechanism.
The housing end goes to an anchor of at least 12 kN, ideally approved to EN 795 with an EN 362 connector, and the lanyard end to the harness point marked A. Keep the anchor above the user and avoid angles to the vertical greater than 30 degrees. Service is required at least annually by Ridgegear or its approved agents; the leaflet states there is no lifespan obsolescence because worn components are replaced during service.
Applications in Oman and the GCC
Roof edges, tank and vessel tops, laydown scaffolds and steel structures in the Gulf are typical uses for a long retractable block, where dust and heat are common. The instructions refer to environmental conditions, particularly offshore use, when setting inspection frequency.
Always check the harness is compatible; the leaflet allows only a full body harness.

Frequently asked questions
What standards are printed for the RGA3?
EN 360:2002 and VG11.060.
What is the maximum user weight?
140 kg, with a maximum arrest force below 6 kN.
Can it be used over an edge?
The instructions say edge tests used a 0.5 mm radius steel edge, so use only over similar edges and discourage contact.
How often is service needed?
At least annually by Ridgegear or approved agents.
