Automated pressure generation for the bench and the plant

The Additel ADT761A is a self-contained automatic pressure calibrator: a built-in electric pump generates the pressure, a controller holds it to 0.003% FS and a 7 inch touchscreen drives the calibration. You enter the set point, the calibrator reaches it and the reading is recorded, which removes the hand pumping and valve juggling of a manual comparison. It is portable enough for the field at about 7.95 kg and accurate enough for a working standard in a laboratory.

It improves on the first-generation 761 with a higher 1,500 psi range, removable internal modules, faster pressure build-up, the ability to read two external modules, a touchscreen with Wi-Fi, LAN, Bluetooth and Ethernet, and double the battery life, as described in the datasheet.

Choosing a model and modules

Each model ships with a fixed high-range module (DP30 for LLP, CP35 for D, CP500, CP1K or CP1.5K) plus a low-range module selected from the ADT155 table. The order code ADT761A-1.5K-02-CP35-PSI-N shows the pattern: series and range, accuracy, low-range module, unit and the manifold port (N, N2, B, B2 or M). Pick a low module around 5 to 10% of your typical test pressure so that the 0.01% or 0.02% FS span is as small as possible. The 0.01% FS option is not offered on the 761A-D, and absolute mode adds 55 Pa uncertainty from the barometer on the 500, 1K and 1.5K models.

Operation and care

The user manual lists several rules. Do not shake, drop or bump the calibrator in use, dry it out thoroughly if condensation has formed, and never point the vent port at the operator during venting. Do not apply more than 30 V between any two electrical jacks, other than the voltage measurement jacks, and bring system pressure back to atmosphere before switching off. Hoses and filters, pneumatic and hydraulic, should be replaced after about 10 years or at the first sign of wear.

Two port notes help stability. Keep the REF port open when calibrating gauge-pressure instruments, and connect it to the reference port of the unit under test for differential instruments. The manual says a control volume larger than about 100 cc at the output port affects pressure stability. The case is IP31 and the operating range is 0 to 50 C.

Where the 761A is used in Oman and the GCC

Metrology rooms at oil and gas operators, power utilities and desalination plants use automatic calibrators to verify pressure transmitters, switches and gauges in volume, and the task feature records as-found and as-left data. Field teams can bring the 761A to a compressor station to calibrate HART transmitters in place with the built-in communicator.

Selection and installation notes

Calibration equipment should be set up before it is relied on. Check the range and connections against the devices you will test, allow the instrument to warm up and stabilise, keep the fittings and tubing clean and use the correct adapters and seals. Keep the calibration certificate on file, plan the re-calibration interval according to your quality system, charge and store the battery as the manual describes and protect the case from impact when it is carried to site.
