Hattersley Fig. 861 Non-Slam Check Valve
Description
Spring-assisted non-slam check valve for pump duty
The Hattersley Fig. 861 is a check valve with spring-assisted closure and an EPDM rubber seat. One data sheet covers three variants: Fig. 861 for PN16, Fig. 861A for ANSI 125 and Fig. 866 for PN25. The manufacturer describes the non-slam design as the result of the rubber seat and spring-assisted closure, with quiet operation and improved disc seating, and says the design lends itself to pump duty applications. The 861 series replaces the older Fig. 860 and 865.
Check valves permit flow in one direction only and close automatically if flow reverses. This valve is suitable for installation in vertical and horizontal pipelines; in a vertical line the flow must be upward. It is for use on Group 2 liquids only, as defined by the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU.
Features
- Non-slam design with spring-assisted closure
- EPDM rubber seat for quiet operation and better seating
- Eyebolt tapped holes from DN200 upward
- Face-to-face dimensions to BS EN 558 series 16
- Flange connection to BS EN 1092-2 PN16 or PN25 and ANSI B16.1 125
- Cast iron or ductile iron body depending on size and rating

The data sheet also prints the face-to-face and body dimensions (columns A, B, F and H, separate for PN16, ANSI 125 and PN25 where they differ) for DN50 to DN600; request the sheet from us for the full dimensional table. Eyebolt tapping follows BS EN 3226:2010 as printed, and Kv is for the fully open valve.
Selection and ordering guide
Choose the variant by flange standard: Fig. 861 for PN16, 861A for ANSI Class 125 and 866 for PN25. Body material changes with size: cast iron up to DN150 in PN16 and ANSI 125, ductile iron above and for all PN25 sizes. The EPDM seat limits temperature to 120 C and makes the valve unsuitable for oils; the data sheet restricts it to Group 2 liquids. Supply the pump data when requesting a quotation so a suitable size can be checked against the Kv column.
Installation notes
The valve is connected to flanges as listed above. The sheet states vertical lines must carry flow upward. Eyebolts are not supplied with the valve, but tapped holes are provided from DN200 to fit eyebolts to the standard cited, so lifting is straightforward for the heavier sizes up to 187 kg at DN600. Use flange gaskets that do not intrude into the bore, which is general practice, and check that the pipe-side flanges leave room for the disc travel.
Where it is used
Non-slam check valves are chosen to limit water hammer when a pump stops; the sheet itself says only that the design suits pump duty. In Gulf district cooling, chilled water and cooling tower circuits the spring-assisted closure is intended to avoid slam when a pump trips. It is not suitable for gases or hydrocarbons according to the group 2 liquid limit.
Specification checklist before ordering
Confirm the following on the pump line before ordering: the variant (Fig. 861 for PN16, Fig. 861A for ANSI 125 or Fig. 866 for PN25), the nominal size from DN50 to DN600, the temperature within -10 to 120 C, and the fluid, which must be a Group 2 liquid as defined by the Pressure Equipment Directive. Because the seat and gasket are EPDM, check chemical compatibility. In a vertical line the flow must be upward, so confirm the pipe orientation on the drawing.
Handling and storage
Store the valves dry with flange faces protected. Larger sizes from DN200 have eyebolt tapped holes, which should be used for lifting instead of the flange bolt holes. Keep the data sheet with the delivery record so the variant and body material can be traced.
Information needed for a quotation
Send the figure number, the size, the flange standard, the quantity and the delivery location in Oman or the GCC, together with the fluid, temperature and installation orientation.

Ordering note: quote the figure number (861, 861A or 866), the DN size and the pump flow rate when requesting a price, so that the Kv value printed on the data sheet can be compared with your duty. Because the body material changes with size and pressure class, state the flange standard as well. Questions on documentation are answered when the quotation is issued.

About brand
Hattersley is a British valve brand whose origins date back to 1897, when 20-year-old Richard Hattersley started a small tool-making business in Halifax. The business later moved to Ormskirk, became a public company in 1936 and merged with Peglers in 1968 to form Pegler-Hattersley. In 2004 Crane Limited bought the Hattersley valve business, and the brand is now part of Crane Building Services & Utilities.
