Cla-Val Series 580 Silent Wafer Check Valve

Description

A spring-loaded wafer check that closes before flow reverses

The Cla-Val Series 580 silent wafer check valve has a spring-loaded poppet that allows the valve to close before flow reversal occurs, giving a silent, non-slam closure. It can be installed vertically or horizontally, flow up or flow down, and its short lay length saves space. It is available in sizes 1 to 10 inch with 125/150 or 250/300 pressure class.

The body is epoxy-coated ductile iron with stainless steel trim and watertight metal-to-metal seating. Buna-N resilient seats are optional for special applications.

Approvals, pressure classes and materials

Approvals printed in the datasheet are Factory Mutual approval for 125/150 class valves of 4 to 10 inch (except those with Buna-N resilient seats), and compliance with the federal lead content limits for drinking water for 125/150 and 250/300 class valves of 1 to 10 inch. The 125/150 class is rated to 250 psi and the 250/300 class to 400 psi.

Materials follow ASTM: ductile iron body 536 65-45-12, 304 stainless steel seat, disc and plug, a 316 stainless steel spring that is stone tumbled and stress relieved, and a replaceable seat and disc. The disc is center guided at both ends with an integral shaft. The flow area through the body is equal to or greater than the cross-section of the equivalent pipe, and the datasheet gives head loss curves for 1 to 8 inch.

Applications and selection

Cla-Val lists fire pump applications, vertical turbine pumps, booster pump stations in high-rise buildings and house pump applications, and states that the valve suits any service where a quick, quiet closure is wanted. The poppet is spring loaded and guided at both ends, so closing does not rely on gravity, which is why the valve can sit vertically with flow up or down. The seat and disc are replaceable in the field, so a worn valve can be refurbished without replacing the body. For service with solids or where a lug body or a different seat is wanted, ask for a material and seat check before ordering.

The wafer is placed between ANSI flanges; the datasheet gives dimensions A to D for 1 to 6 inch in one table and a separate table for 8 and 10 inch. For example, a 4 inch valve has an outside diameter of 7.00 inch and a 6 inch valve 9.75 inch. For a two-door design in sizes up to 36 inch see the Cla-Val Series 582.

About brand

Cla-Val is an American manufacturer of automatic control valves for water distribution, fire protection, aviation fuelling and industry. It was founded in 1936 in South Pasadena, California, with five employees, introduced the industry's first hydraulically actuated globe valve in the late 1930s, and moved to its present headquarters in Costa Mesa, California, in 1954. The company has been led by three generations of the same family.

Cla-Val company profile

Founded 1936, South Pasadena, California, USA
Headquarters Costa Mesa, California, since 1954, with in-house foundries
Ownership Family-led for three generations
Technology Hydraulically operated, diaphragm-actuated globe and angle main valves controlled by pilot systems
Product families 100-01 Hytrol main valve, pressure reducing, pressure relief and sustaining, level and float control, check and surge anticipating valves, air release valves, aviation fuelling valves

Milestones

  • 1936: Cla-Val starts in South Pasadena with five employees.
  • Late 1930s: Cla-Val introduces the first hydraulically actuated globe valve in its industry.
  • 1954: The company moves to Costa Mesa, still its worldwide headquarters.

Control valve and air valve range

The range is built around the Hytrol 100-01 main valve. Pilot systems on that body create pressure reducing and sustaining valves such as the 90-01 and 92-01, rate of flow valves, solenoid valves, pump control valves, check valves, and altitude and level control valves. Cla-Val also lists air release and vacuum valves and silent or two-door wafer check valves, each with an engineering data sheet that gives sizes, materials and pilot ranges.

Markets and materials

Cla-Val addresses waterworks, fueling, marine, mining and industrial applications. Its data sheets state that valves are manufactured in more than 50 different alloys, with ductile iron, cast steel and bronze as the standard body materials and fusion-bonded epoxy coating as an option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Series 580 called silent?
A spring-loaded poppet closes the valve before flow reverses, so the closure is non-slam and silent.
Can it be installed vertically?
Yes. It operates horizontally or vertically, with flow up or flow down.
Which approvals does the datasheet list?
Factory Mutual approval for 125/150 class valves of 4 to 10 inch, and compliance with the federal lead content limits for 1 to 10 inch valves.
What are the pressure ratings?
125/150 class is rated to 250 psi and 250/300 class to 400 psi.
Is a resilient seat available?
Yes. Buna-N resilient seats are optional; FM approval does not apply to valves supplied with them.
