Donaldson SPN 0003-0063 VarioDry Membrane Air Dryer

Description

A point-of-use membrane dryer with no electrical supply

The Donaldson VarioDry SPN 0003-0063 is a membrane air dryer for point-of-use drying of compressed air. Humid air flows through a bundle of hollow fibres whose membrane attracts water vapour; the vapour diffuses through the thin selective layer to the outside, where a small partial flow of dried air, expanded to atmospheric pressure, sweeps it away in counterflow.

There are no valves, controllers or electrical connections, the noise level is very low and the module is maintenance free. Nine models handle 3 to 63 m3/h inlet flow, and dew point reduction can be set anywhere up to 40 K, depending on how much of the flow is used as purge.

  • SPN 0063: 20 K inlet / outlet m3/h 63.0 / 56.7; 35 K 44.8 / 38.5; 55 K 29.8 / 23.5; 75 K 21.6 / 15.3

Values are inlet / outlet flow at 35 C and 7 bar(g); the sheet gives all nine models. For other pressures the table value is the nominal flow divided by a pressure factor, from 0.41 at 4 bar(g) through 1.00 at 7 bar(g) to 2.22 at 12 bar(g).

Using a membrane dryer well

The higher the pressure of the air, the better the membrane works, and a falling inlet dew point also lowers the outlet dew point, so the drier follows the load. Because the membrane is damaged by oil and dirt, Donaldson requires prefiltration; SPN Superplus already carries a DF housing with a type S element and an econometer, and a connection kit allows horizontal or vertical mounting.

Typical uses are laser cutting, instrument air at isolated points, analysers and paint shop equipment. The sheet names chemical and pharmaceutical, food and beverage, paint and finish, machine building, environment, energy and PCB assembly as the industries. It also compares the new SPN with the old SP design: maximum flow doubles from 32 to 63 m3/h and the maximum dew point reduction improves from -27 C to -40 C.

About brand

Donaldson is the American filtration company founded in Minnesota in 1915. It started when Frank Donaldson Sr. built an air cleaner for a tractor engine that kept failing in dusty fields. It is now headquartered in Bloomington, Minnesota, and makes filters and filtration systems for engines, hydraulics, compressed air and gases, dust collection and process liquids.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Donaldson compressed air dryers and filters, gas filter housings, activated carbon adsorbers, hydraulic and fuel filtration and dust collectors, and supply them and their replacement elements in Oman and the GCC.

Milestones

  • 1915: Frank Donaldson Sr. builds an air cleaner for a tractor that kept failing in a dusty field; the family starts Donaldson Company in Minnesota.
  • 1917: Air cleaners are supplied for artillery tractors.
  • 1920s: Exhaust products are added after crop fires caused by engine sparks.
  • 1974: Donaldson acquires Torit, the dust collector business.
  • 2015: The company marks its 100th year.

Compressed air quality is set by ISO 8573-1 classes for particles, water and oil. A typical instrument air system uses a coarse filter and a fine coalescing filter before the dryer, an adsorption dryer for a low pressure dew point (for example -40 °C), and a dust filter after it. An activated carbon stage removes oil vapour where the air touches food or is breathed. Heatless dryers use some of the dry air to regenerate the desiccant, while heat-regenerated and zero-purge types save that air on larger systems.

Where Donaldson products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Donaldson filters and dryers are used for instrument and plant air in oil and gas, refining, power and desalination plants, for breathing air, in food and pharmaceutical production, on hydraulic systems and fuel storage, and in cement and bulk handling.

Ordering Donaldson products: what we need

Send the model and size from the nameplate. For dryers and filters, add the flow (m³/h or scfm), working pressure, inlet temperature, required dew point or ISO 8573-1 class, and the supply voltage. For replacement elements, send the element part number or the housing model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the SPN dryer need electricity?
No. It has no electrical supply, valves or controller; it works on the pressure difference across the membrane.
What flows does it cover?
Nine models from 3 m3/h (SPN 0003) to 63 m3/h (SPN 0063) at 20 K dew point reduction, 35 C and 7 bar(g).
Does it need a pre-filter?
Yes. The sheet requires a 1 micrometre particle filter and a 0.01 micrometre coalescing filter; SPN Superplus includes it.
What is the maximum pressure?
12.5 bar(g) at up to 60 C.
What is purge air?
Part of the dried air that is expanded to atmosphere and sweeps water vapour from the outside of the fibres; about 15 percent from 35 K dew point reduction.
