Banner Q90R2-12040-6KDQ 60 GHz Radar Sensor, IO-Link

Description

A 60 GHz radar sensor with a 120 by 40 degree field of view and IO-Link

The Q90R2-12040-6KDQ is a 60 GHz Q90R2 R-GAGE radar sensor from Banner Engineering with dual discrete outputs and IO-Link. It uses FMCW radar to detect and measure the distance to metals, liquids and organic materials in a 120 degree by 40 degree field of view, from 0.15 m to 20 m, and it can also report velocity. The housing is aluminium with a polycarbonate window and carries IP67 and IP69K ratings.

Supplied software, IO-Link or a remote input wire configures the sensing window, so the sensor can work as a background-suppression detector or, using a taught distance range, in a retroreflective style presence/absence mode.

Choosing the 60 GHz dual discrete model

The 12040 in the part number is the 120 by 40 degree beam. The K in the suffix is the 60 GHz family, and D selects dual discrete outputs. Output 1 doubles as the IO-Link channel, so parameters, distance and velocity data can be read by an IO-Link master. A 77 GHz sibling, Q90R2-12040-7KDQ, is listed for the US, Canada, Europe and China.

The manual notes that detection is reliable between the D1 and D2 distances for stationary and moving objects, while objects between 0.15 m (D0) and D1 may be detected but not reliably. Install the sensor where it is not accessible by unauthorised personnel, as the datasheet requires.

Radio approval, accessories and ordering

As a radio device, approvals are region specific, so please confirm that the telecom approval covers the country of use before ordering. The sensor has an integral M12 connector, so a mating cordset is ordered separately.

A 38-page product manual with beam patterns, TEACH procedures, IO-Link parameters and dimensions is the attached reference document.

Documents and quotation

Please check the frequency band, output type and local radio approval before ordering, because the final code depends on the installation. About brand

Banner Engineering, founded in 1966 in Minneapolis, USA, makes industrial sensors, indicator lights and machine safety products that show up on packaging lines and conveyors everywhere. Seven Star LLC lists Banner devices including the Q4X rugged stainless steel laser distance sensor and the K50 Pro Beacon IO-Link multicolor RGB indicator, and supplies Banner sensors and indicators to plants and machine builders in Oman.

Banner Q4X and K50 Pro

Banner offers the Q4X in four range versions, all starting at 25 mm: Q4X100 to 100 mm, Q4X300 to 300 mm, Q4X500 to 500 mm and Q4X600 to 600 mm. The series is available with discrete, analog and IO-Link outputs and has a display on the sensor. The K50 Pro Beacon is a status indicator whose color and behavior are set from the controller over IO-Link.

Ordering Banner products: what we need

Send the complete Banner model number from the device label, because range, output type and connector are all coded into it. For the Q4X, state the measuring distance, the output your PLC input needs and the connector or cable style. For indicators, give the housing size, control method and voltage. Mating cordsets and brackets can be included for GCC orders.
