SICK C4MT-03014ABB03DB0 miniTwin Safety Light Curtain
Description
C4MT-03014ABB03DB0 is a SICK miniTwin electro-sensitive protective device (part no. 1206953) that guards a hazardous opening with an invisible curtain of light instead of a fixed fence. The catalogue summary lists: usage: miniTwin4 as a standalone device; mounting system type: O-fix bracket; safety level: PL e, SIL 3, Type 4; resolution: 14 mm; scanning range: 5 m.
C4MT-03014ABB03DB0: function, principle and typical use
A safety light curtain is a sender and receiver pair. Protection with a light curtain depends on geometry as much as on the device.
Reflective surfaces beside the beam path are a classic source of problems: a shiny panel can bounce a beam around an obstacle and hide it from the receiver, so keep a clearance recommended in the operating instructions. When two curtains are installed close together, optical synchronisation or different channel settings prevent one sender from disturbing the other receiver.

Type code C4MT-03014ABB03DB0 and what to check before ordering
Worked example, derived and not a design value: with the listed response time of 14 ms, the device contributes 2 x 14 = 28 mm to the safety distance (approach speed 2,000 mm/s), and the penetration allowance for a 14 mm resolution is 8 x (14 – 14) = 0 mm, so at least 28 mm plus the distance travelled during your machine stopping time must separate the curtain from the hazard. Your own calculation to ISO 13855 governs.
Wiring data to note: power draw: ≤ 3 A; supply: 24 V DC (19.2 V DC … 28.8 V DC); resolution: 14 mm; response time: ≤ 14 ms; outputs: PNP semiconductors, short-circuit protected, cross-circuit monitored; connection: plug, M12, 5-pin; range: 0 m … 4 m.
Housing and environmental limits listed: enclosure rating of IP65 (EN 60529); wavelength of 850 nm; housing of aluminum alloy ALMGSI 0.5; storage temperature of –25 °C … +70 °C; operating temperature of –20 °C … +55 °C; weight of 115 g; shock of 15 g / 6 ms (EN 60068-2-27); vibration of 5 … 150 Hz, 3,5 mm / 1 g (EN 60068-2-6).
Confirm the connection (plug type and cable length) and whether your safety relay or PLC accepts PNP OSSD outputs.
Keep a test rod of the stated diameter handy for the periodic function test described in the operating instructions.

About brand
SICK is the German maker of industrial sensors: photoelectric and proximity sensors, safety laser scanners and light curtains, encoders, distance sensors, code readers and gas analysers. Erwin Sick, an optics engineer, founded it in Munich in 1946, and in 1952 it introduced its first marketable accident-prevention light curtain, which protected press operators by stopping the machine when a hand broke the light beam. The company moved to Waldkirch in the Black Forest in 1956 and is still headquartered there. It is a privately held company, and has been an Aktiengesellschaft (AG) since 1996.

Choosing a SICK sensor
For object detection, the sensing principle comes first. A retro-reflective sensor (WL series) sends light to a reflector and switches when an object breaks the beam; it is reliable over long distances and easy to align. A sensor with background suppression (WTB series) detects an object at a set distance and ignores what is behind it, which suits conveyors with shiny or dark backgrounds. A through-beam pair (WS/WE) gives the longest range and the highest reliability in dust. For transparent bottles and film, use a model built for transparent objects (for example WL12G-3B or WL150-P420). The digits in the code also matter: "P" usually means a PNP output and "N" NPN, and the last digits set the connector or cable. For machine guarding, a safety laser scanner such as nanoScan3 or microScan3 protects an area, while a safety controller such as Flexi Soft combines several safety devices.
Where SICK products are used
In Oman and the GCC, SICK sensors are used in packaging and bottling lines, food and beverage plants, logistics and airport baggage handling, cement and steel plants, ports and cranes, automated warehouses, and on machines built by European OEMs. SICK safety scanners guard robots and automated guided vehicles, and its encoders give position feedback on motors, hoists and conveyors.

Ordering SICK products: what we need
Send the type code and the 7-digit SICK part number from the label (for example WTB12-3P2431 together with its part number). For a replacement sensor, add the output (PNP or NPN), connection (M8, M12 or cable) and sensing distance. For encoders, add the interface (incremental, SSI, PROFIBUS, PROFINET), resolution and shaft type. For safety scanners, tell us the model and whether the existing configuration needs to be kept.
