Fireye 65UV5 Simplicity Integrated UV Flame Scanner

Description

A one-piece UV flame scanner with built-in flame relay and 4-20 mA signal

The Fireye 65UV5 Simplicity is a microprocessor-based ultraviolet flame scanner with an electro-mechanical self-checking shutter and an internal flame relay that has a fixed ON/OFF threshold, so no external flame amplifier is needed. It detects ultraviolet emissions from fossil-fuel flames such as natural gas, coke oven gas, propane, methane, butane, kerosene, light petroleum distillates and diesel fuels. Power is 24 Vdc from an external supply, a colour-coded LED shows flame and alarm status through a port on the rear cover, and an analog 4 to 20 mA output follows flame signal strength.

The scanner is offered with a one-second or four-second flame failure response time (FFRT) depending on the model. The 65UV5-1004QD-1 and -1004EQD versions are one second, and the 65UV5-1004QD versions are four seconds. The earlier 65UV5-1000 and -1000E became obsolete in 2008 and were replaced by the 65UV5-1004 and -1004E.

Choosing the model and sighting the flame

Select the response time first: the four-second versions tolerate brief signal dips, and the one-second versions suit applications whose burner code requires fast flame failure response. Choose BSP or NPT threads to match the sight pipe and an E or CEX model where CE or ATEX marking is required. The quick-disconnect versions use cable assemblies sold separately in lengths from 3 to 90 m.

Aim the scanner so that its line of sight crosses the burner centre line at a slight angle and sees the pilot and the base of the flame envelope, where UV radiation is strongest. Keep the viewing window clean with continuous purge air, and use an orifice disk if the signal is excessive. Related flame monitoring equipment is listed under burners and gas trains and flame detection; see also the LAMTEC BurnerTronic BT300 burner control system.
