Hioki IR4056-20 Digital Insulation Tester, 5 Voltage Ranges

Description

A drop-proof digital insulation tester with five test voltages

The Hioki IR4056-20 is a digital insulation tester with five test voltage ranges, built for routine electrical maintenance. Hioki gives the rated voltages and effective maximum indicated values as 50 V / 100 MOhm, 125 V / 250 MOhm, 250 V / 500 MOhm, 500 V / 2000 MOhm and 1000 V / 4000 MOhm, so one instrument covers control circuits, low-voltage equipment and 1000 V work. The case is built to withstand a 1 m drop onto a concrete floor, and Hioki lists a 3-year product warranty with accuracy guaranteed for one year.

Several details are aimed at the technician working on live sites. The RELEASE button blinks under the 500 V and 1000 V settings, and has to be pressed to unlock the high-voltage output, which prevents accidental high-voltage generation. A MEASURE key can be pressed for a single test or lifted and locked for continuous testing. Live voltage detection warns with a red light and a continuous tone, a comparator gives a PASS or FAIL decision against a preset value with light and sound, and voltage is measured with automatic AC/DC detection, so the tester also serves as a voltmeter up to 600 V. The IR4056 also has a low-resistance (continuity) function, which the PV-oriented IR4053 lacks.

The IR4000 series: how the models differ

Hioki sells the family in several variants: the IR4057-50 adds a high-speed measurement with a 0.3 s comparator response, a digital bar graph and Bluetooth communication with the optional Z3210 wireless adapter for transferring values to Excel or the GENNECT Cross app; the IR4059 is the model for EVs with 50 V to 1000 V ranges; and the IR4053-10 is for photovoltaic systems with PV-ohm measurement up to 1000 V. The IR4056-20 is the straightforward general-purpose model without wireless.

The standard package for the IR4056-20 is the instrument, test lead L9787, a neck strap, four LR6 alkaline batteries and an instruction manual. A carrying case (C0212) is listed as an option. For higher-voltage work, such as cables and motors, Hioki makes the 5000 V IR5050 and IR5051.

What to confirm before ordering

Check the order code: IR4056-20 and IR4056-21 differ in the test lead supplied, and the brochure notes the IR4056-21 as not CE marked, so confirm which lead set and which marking your site requires. Confirm that 1000 V is the highest test voltage in your procedure, and say if you need the remote-switch lead, a carrying case or a wireless adapter (which would point to the IR4057-50). The brochure is a series document; the data above are for the IR4056.

Ordering Hioki instruments: what we need

Send the full order code, because Hioki uses suffixes to separate versions, for example sets with wireless adapters or different leads. Name the accessories you need, such as test leads, clamps, current sensors, the Z3210 wireless adapter and carrying cases, and say if a calibration certificate is required. If the model is uncertain, describe the circuit, the voltage and the quantity to be measured.
