A 2000 A AC clamp meter with a jaw only 11 mm deep

The Hioki CM4141-50 is a true RMS AC clamp meter that measures up to 2000 A AC (60.00 A, 600.0 A and 2000 A ranges) with a jaw that opens to a maximum conductor diameter of 55 mm. Its distinguishing feature is the jaw profile: about 82 mm wide and only about 11 mm thick over the first 44 mm of each tip, so it reaches between cables in crowded panels where a bulky jaw would not fit.

As well as AC current it measures AC current frequency, AC inrush current, AC, DC and AC+DC voltage, voltage frequency, capacitance and temperature with a type K thermocouple. True RMS measurement lets it read distorted waveforms correctly, the maximum voltage between terminals is 1000 V AC or DC, and the line-to-earth rating is 600 V (CAT IV) and 1000 V (CAT III). It can also be combined with the DC high voltage probe P2010 in DC High V Probe mode, and with the optional Wireless Adapter Z3210 it transfers data by Bluetooth to the GENNECT Cross app.

Hioki lists it with the CM4000-series durability features: operation from -25 to 65 degC, a Hioki 3-year warranty (or 30,000 jaw open/close cycles) and about 48 hours of battery operation.

Choosing the AC-only 2000 A model

An AC-only clamp is the right tool for motor feeders, transformer secondaries, generator outputs and most distribution boards, and the 2000 A range with a 55 mm jaw covers large cables and busbars. For DC circuits such as battery banks, solar strings and DC drives, the AC/DC models of the same family (CM4371-50, CM4373-50 and CM4375-50) are required, because this model reads only AC current.

Hioki states that inrush current capture, current frequency and a low-current wire-wrapping method are available, which helps when starting currents of motors must be seen or when a small current must be raised above the lower limit of the range. The manual notes that wrapping the conductor n times increases the displayed value by n+1 times.

What to confirm before ordering

Confirm that you only need AC current, the maximum cable or busbar size against the 55 mm jaw, and whether Bluetooth transfer (Z3210), the P2010 high voltage probe, a thermocouple or test leads are required.
